Long time lurker, first time poster.
Anyway, I've been reading a lot of posts in anticipation for the Tool show tonight. If anybody has a review of the show, please share. I know Radiohead blew people away last year, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Tool will top that performance...of course I'm biased so what do I know. ;D

I just got home and all I can say is WOW I knew they were going to be good but damn they blew me away. I think that set list is right also. They played 46&2 and Aenima which for me made my year ;D I still have a big grin on my face.

Yeah, I would have given anything to go to the 'Roo this year, but it just wasn't possible. Still gonna see Tool when they play Chicago on the 27th and Summerfest on the 4th of July!

The tool set was excellent - great visuals and the band rocked really hard for the entire set. I was a little bummed by the lack of an 'encore' - but to be honest I don't know that I could have taken another 10 minutes of that kind of intensity. Plus, I don't know that I've heard a louder band on the main stage ever at the roo.

Wow. Really? This good? I thought they were pretty good, but at first I was really dissappointed. I didn't get into the show until about "10,000 Days." It was a good show, but by no means the best I saw all weekend. The visuals, I must admit, were very cool. Frankly, (and by listening to people all weekend I know I'm in the minority), I felt the Police were better.

Im surprised you thought that..... I was really really disappointed by The Police and didn't even stay for the whole thing. But everyone has the right to their opinion
I knew it was going to be spectacular, but i had no idea about Tom Morello! Although they play with their openers sometimes, having someone come on stage is something Tool never does.
Also, did everyone just not realize that you could walk into the pits up front? We were crammed in the middle and my friend went to piss and we look down and hes right up front in the pit! So of course we followed but it took like 30 mins for it to fill up. Did the same thing for the Police and was like 2 rows back.
I too was very dissapointed in the Police. My wife loved them and even made it up front. I expected more from them. No energy and going through the motions. Tool was amazing as usual.

^^ I know it's a tool thread, but I have to agree about the Police. I enjoyed the show, don't get me wrong - but we left around 10:30 to go get a spot for the Lips. I felt the energy was a little lacking and personally it just wasn't doing it for me. But to each their own.

Wow I wondered about that yesterday. I was at the barrier behind that area for JBT and wanted to be closer but I assumed it was VIP or something....
Tool was amazing but i'm very sad to say that they shut down most of the tapers for this show. I did see one guy holding his mic over his head so hopefully there will be some kind of recording of it out there. The visuals and lights made the tool set one of the best sets of the weekend. Not to mention breaking out an insane FLOOD, LATERALUS with tom morello, and some very humorous comments from maynard.
I'll agree about the police though... The lack of energy was disappointing so i went and got a seat by the soundboard for the lips show. The war pigs "soundcheck" was great.

To me neither the Tool set or the Police set were all that great. My favorite shows were Mule and Ben Harper. Radiohead last year topped all this years headliners.

yes could someone please post the full show. by the way from where i was in the very front it seemed like i was one of the few people that were into the show. i dont know whether everyone was too tripped out to move but the crowd seemed dead(especially during flood of all songs), maybe i was just too full of it? but thanks to whoever posts the full show, it was amazing

I was pretty far back and everyone in the crowd around me was really really into it and loving every minute, maybe they were just dumbfounded by the the sheer awesomeness

I guess it's all a matter of taste. I have friends who love Radiohead, and while I know they are extremely popular, I just can't get into their music....and believe me, I've tried. I'll take Maynard's vocals over Thom Yorke's anyday. But as I stated, it all comes down to one's musical preference.

I agree. I was pretty close and NO ONE was into it. I thought the music was amazing and was pretty dumbfounded, but there was definitely a break in the energy feedback loop. The band was giving but it wasn't coming back. Compare the noise/energy to radiohead last year. The screams were so unbelievably loud and the dancing so intense... nothing like that this year. Maynard seemed really frustrated even, when he said "come on bonnaroo!" and some other comments. No one even tried for the encore... pretty sad. Maybe it just wasn't danceable enough? the visuals freaked people out? the vibe was not good...

First of all, let me say that I thought the Tool show was amazing. I was a fan going in and had high expectations. Their playing and visuals exceeded what I had imagined.
That rendition of Lateralus is off the charts. As for an encore, I didn't expect one. They don't usually do them. They come in, rock your face, then leave. That is just how they play. No wasting time on encores and, frankly, the show didn't need an encore.
As for the crowd...
I was very disappointed. They were putting on an amazing show and Maynard seemed to be making a serious effort (not like him) to make a connection with the crowd and he wasn't getting much love back. Often, he doesn't even speak during a performance.
I didn't feel like the energy that the band was dishing out was being received in kind. It was like everyone was saving their energy for the Lips or something... ?
I hope I'm wrong and it was just the area I was in. That can happen when you are in a massive crowd. I'd like to hear others accounts of the Tool show.
Also, I'm thinking something must have happened between David Cross and Maynard. Before 'The Pot' (maybe) he said something like "this goes out to Deputy Sheriff David Cross".

David Cross is a huge Tool fan.
As for the crowd, I felt the opposite. Where I was (right side of the soundstage, JUST in front of it) people were going nuts, and starting moshing to "Stinkfist".
The Flaming Lips crowd was DEAD where I was standing, which was on the left side about 50 yards back. Anyone else think this? Peoples experience can be totally different in huge crowds based on who is next to you.
tool i dont remember but about but my friend said the crowd wasnt really into it at the end and didnt cheer enough for a encore for sure... But for the flaming lips concerts i was in the right side and was next to a rabbit and a cow and i was a monkey soo i deff think we were having a good time.... that was the show of the year for me by far.

I had the exact opposite experience. The crowd around me (for the most part) was dead for Tool (I was on the left side of the soundstage).
The Lips crowd around me was crazy.
I'm glad to hear that there were others as into the Tool show as me and my friends.
Both Tool and the Lips were amazing in completely different ways.
Thanks for the info on David Cross. I didn't realize he was a Tool fan.
