dude i think bonnaroo is just a great vacation from reality... i mean yeah sure i was pacifistic... but that was the freaking point, i work all the time in a meaningless desk job... letting go of all of my inabitions and having a good time hanging out with people who did the same was the greatest experience of my life...
as for trying to change anything... i think bonnaroo is just a good place to take some time to focus on things.... (all though it can be hard to focus)... your not making the difference while your just wasted in a field watching music... your not even making the difference recycling while your there... but i think the idea is to take away an impression of what you can do to make a change once you back to your real life....
As your attorney I advise you to drive at top speed and it'll be a Goddamn miracle if we get there before you turn into some kind of wild animal. Are you ready for that? Checking into a Las Vegas hotel under a phony name with the intent to commit capital fraud with a head full of acid? I certainly hope so...
I couldn't get into the show. I tried. I just don't listen to metal very much, and it was a little too intense for me. I couldn't handle it. But I just listened to Lateralus and really liked it. Maybe it was a combination of things at Bonnaroo.

Hahaha, Tool is certainly not metal. They're more like...hard prog, with a little itty bitty bit of metal influence thrown in there. I say that, because I like Tool, yet hate most modern metal.
I thought it was a cool show, even though there were points where everything sounded alike. The only issues I had with it were the overall negativity in the music and the huge meatheads around me punching the air and barking (that's not to say all tool fans are like that, I just got stuck in a pack of them).

TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!! That show was INTENSE!!!!!!!!
the fun guys turned that show into an experience i'll never forget. Tool was sooooooo loud i could hear'em in my soul. It was like a Giant otherworldly juggernaut monster destroying everything in its path and scorching the earth with sound waves made of fire. and somehow i mean that in a good way. a very very good way! I love all kinds of music, soft reflective music, groovy stuff... it creates something original in your brain.... but sometimes it just feels good to have a band with such an masive presence that it literally tears you apart and puts you back together. TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLL
im a huge fan who is just speaking on things that have caught my eye on this thread.
on the subject of tool being loud: hell yes they are loud, its supposed to be that way. danny talks in a past interview about loving to cank the shiz loud. for god sakes adam has a couple of diezels and a mesa on stage.
on the subject of the production: tool wants you to hear the music and focus on the experience. they want to stay out of the spotlight as much as possible. they dont want to be hailed and they dont want to be seen on huge screens playing. they want you to see visuals that guide your eyes while the music steers everything else. i dont see how you can compare the lips or sts9's production to that at all, not to mention say that one is better than the other. they are all different.
on the subject of them being too much for those on psychedelics: no they are intense, beautiful, deep, just right. tool is supposed to be intense. they use psychedelics, they know what they are doing. intense trips are the meaningful ones. the ones that change you and your perspective when you come out of it. thats the way i think psychedelics should be used. a bad trip is the persons fault who took the psychedelics. tool didnt make anyone have a bad trip, it was the person who chose to have the bad thought or get frightened to send it all down. tool has always been amazing to me on psychedelics. btw check the lyrics to rosetta stoned
on the subject of the setlist: tool tends to choose a setlist and stick to it, for the most part, for several shows. i saw them in ATL on the 4th and the setlist was almost identical except for the pot and aenima. it was also almost the same for many shows before that. so the roo setlist was very similar to what the fans at tool only shows are getting which i think is cool.
on the subject of maynard: i loved his attitude at roo. he was loose and seemed like he was in good spirits. sarcastic, duh, its maynard. in the ATL show he didnt say anything except hey to the crowd and thanks to the mastadon drummer. i dont think hes an ass bc he called for no flash during a song. thats their art. lots of museums ive been to wont let you photograph at all or only in certain places.
ok im done. they kicked ass. if you didnt like it you just didnt get it, which may or may not be your fault. but if it aint your thing then it aint your thing. going into these things with an open mind is all you can do- the rest is up to you.

Tool really isn't metal...... But I'm glad you tried I tried to like the Police also but they failed to move me.
it was my 6th time seeing tool. it wasn't the best tool show i have ever seen, my first will always hold that crown i believe. this was the best sound i have ever heard from them. yes, they were loud, but they were very clear. when i saw them a week before adam's guitar was deafening loud and distorted and elft ears ringing, at roo he was clear as a bell. maynard was the best i have ever heard. it was a great show. probably now my 2nd favorite.
Im not a tool fan, and gave them a fair shot, went in open minded, and left early. . . lol
Not for me, i just couldnt get into it. Crowd seemed to have a vibe i wasnt enjoying. That actually was the only show i was at that we decided to leave early cause we werent enjoyin it
Im not, at all, putting them down, or anyone who likes them for that matter. Its awesome that Tool fans got to enjoy them at Bonnaroo, its great to see people so happy and excited.
I agree. I was pretty close and NO ONE was into it. I thought the music was amazing and was pretty dumbfounded, but there was definitely a break in the energy feedback loop. The band was giving but it wasn't coming back. Compare the noise/energy to radiohead last year. The screams were so unbelievably loud and the dancing so intense... nothing like that this year. Maynard seemed really frustrated even, when he said "come on bonnaroo!" and some other comments. No one even tried for the encore... pretty sad. Maybe it just wasn't danceable enough? the visuals freaked people out? the vibe was not good...
I was too tripped out to move.
Yea .. i second that big time.. My Druqs kicked in during that set and I thought manard was an alien. EXCELLENT SHOW!!!!

Plus, Maynard can sing. And hoo boy, can he sing.

Well, whatever it was, it was too intense for me. But I appreciate you Tool fans being courteous and respectable throughout the weekend. I must admit I was concerned. My experience with Tool fans in Louisiana has been less than perfect over the years. I did try though, hopefully that counts for something.

The only thing I got from Tool was a headache. A lot of the crowd wasn't into the show because it wasn't any good. All these people talking about how good Tool was and they ended 30 mins. early? That is weak for any band let alone a headliner. They're supposed to be some legendary band and they can't even fill their set? Lame. If the music had been good I wouldn't even be posting but it sucked. I wish they would have put it on mute and just let the visuals play without the sh*tty music. Oh, and my splitting headache completely vanished after I left Tool early. Coincidence? Nope.
Hmmm... where to start?
The music 'sucked'? According to whom? You? If you say that you don't like their music, that is one thing. To say that the music 'sucks' is ridiculous and an intentional slap in the face at those of us who are Tool fans (not to mention the band itself).
You didn't like it. Fine... I realize that not every band is made for every person. We left the Super Jam early because it was too focused on Ben Harper (not a fan), but I would never say something conclusive like 'the music sucked'. It didn't suck... I just couldn't get into it.
I mean... are you saying that they sucked as musicians? If so, then that shows a real lack of musical knowledge. Danny Carey is widely considered one of the (if not THE) best rock drummers in the world. Maynard has one of the most powerful, wide-ranging voices in rock music. Adam and Justin do some of the most complex/experimental rhythms/leads in rock (changing keys and time signatures as often as some bands change chords). As complex as it is, they still keep things unbelievably tight in their live shows. It really is amazing.
If you are saying that the music sucked in general, then I will deduce that you just didn't LIKE the music... big difference.
I'm not a fan of Oysterhead. I find their music corny and repetitive, but I would never say that it 'sucks'. I respect them each as musicians and I respect the fact that a lot of people seem to enjoy them.
As for them ending early...
They did what they set out to do. They blew people's minds (obviously, by reading the majority of these posts). Who really cares what 'time' the show ends and 'how long' they played? It was enough. That was all I cared about.
The Police ended early... the 'Super Jam' started late and ended early. As a matter of fact, RARELY in the past two years that I have been going to Bonnaroo has a band that has a 2 1/2 or 3 hour window actually played the entire time that they are scheduled for. I don't think Radiohead did last year and that was the longest concert they have ever played.
You don't like Tool... fine. It is unnecessary to put them down just because you couldn't get into it and 'had a headache'.
I got one of their albums before Roo Laterlus or something like that. Listened to the whole show at Roo. Music was ok, light show and visuals were cool. Still don't like em........hey I tried!!!

As someone who has never really listened to the band, I enjoyed the Tool show. It was nothing life-changing, but I had a good time and left with an overall positive impression. While it didn't make me a fan, I have a new (and more accurate) impression of Tool.

Alright Here goes, Footage of the entire Tom Morello Lateralus solo 10 minutes long. video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7380615600090446802&hl=en Tool was one of the best shows I have ever seen, and Morello's solo with the light show sent me off into some other dimension like War Of the Worlds or something. At least I had the presence of mind to record it though. I could barely hang on for the Tool set it was like a sensory explosion. Definitely the best show all weekend. After the show was over, the crowd seemed to not posess the skills for an encore, like they forgot how, and jus pushed everyone out of the Main stage area. Once I finally got to sit down after the show it was the most relaxing sit down I have had in a long time. Enjoy the footage I will post some more if you look under videos from user, and I have a lot of Coachella videos also. Also you should have good speakers for this, laptop and computer speakers without bass won't sound very good.

Tom Morello's guitar solo will last with me forever... so awesome.
The only bad thing about the show was some of the people couldn't "handle it" without yelling "OH MY F_ng GOD!" or "Oh Shiite!" every minute or so... it really took me out of it and kinda killed my buzz.
They were absolutely incredible if you ask me. I put it right up there with Radiohead as one of the best sets ever at Bonnaroo and SURELY the best headlining set of this year. It helped I was faced on liquid. It also helped for me to be exposed to them for the first time a month prior to Bonnaroo.
They are without a doubt one of the most psychedelic bands I have ever seen. Their setlist construction and show production is crafted like a story. It's intense, wrought with emotion, encourages the audience to not only hear, but to see and to think. It's jampacked with sensory overload that builds itself up from the beginning to the end of the show.
I was absolutely blown away by them at Bonnaroo after having seen them for the first time in an arena one month prior to the day. I thought it was better than the Desoto show, and Tom Morello on Lateralus was the best thing I saw at Bonnaroo this year, hands down. I honestly was not a Tool fan at this time last year, I was only really familiar with "Sober" and a few other songs that have gotten radio play. But after these last 2 shows, and especially Bonnaroo, I'm a Tool fan for life now. They were easily the best show of this Bonnaroo, in my mind.
More than anything the crowd blew it for me. I walked around a few times trying to find a good spot but it seemed like a douche-fest to me. This was the only Roo crowd I've ever had a problem with getting people to return a smile. Also, Maynard came off to me as acting very arrogant and antagonistic. I'm not surprised that the crowd didn't get that into it. Musically they delivered, but I got bored rather quickly. Sorry if i offend any Tool freaks out there but they totally lost 1/2 a fan and 100% of my respect last weekend.
I could see how people that aren't into hard music wouldn't like TOOL, but I just can't understand how even the biggest anti-metalhead couldn't see the genius in a song like schism, which is one of their most accessible songs but also one of their most beautiful. By the end of the set I was convinced that tool would leave bonnaroo with 80,000 new fans. I can't believe that some people didn't dig it. The light show alone was one of the craziest things I've ever seen, and mixed with some of the best music out there right now......ughgggh. And if you weren't at least excited by "Tom fuckin Morello's" guest spot, then you're just lame.
Anyway.....WHO'S GOT A RECORDING OF THE SET???!?!?! I NEED IT SO BADDDDDD
I agree the Tom Morello cameo was sweet. Unfortunately, that was the only bearable part of the show for me. If the name of the band on stage hadn't been Tool, I swear I could have been listening to ANY 90s garage band.
Post by masshysteria on Jun 21, 2007 13:51:03 GMT -5
Explain the "listening to any 90's garage band" comment for me. They made it through the 90's and still making some of the more complex, thought provoking music out right now. I am not just saying this because I am a fan of Tool, but do you really think AC and Superfly would of given them a headlining spot if they were just any "90s garage band"....i think not. Lets see you play like any instrument to the abilities of those guys and then I will take back what I have said.
"That's the big thing about education. People can be book smart, but not really intelligent about anything else. A lot of times they just taking in all this information and regurgitate it. It's much more important to process it and personalize it. To apply it to your world, to your life. You have to walk the walk, or you can't really report about it honestly."
