I'm suprised at the mixed reviews. I was sure that they would leave the show with at least 70,000+ new fans...but like I said in my earlier post, maybe I'm just that biased.

Yeah the bonnaroo show was the longest setlist they have done the whole year. Also we got to see The Pot, Aenemia, Flood, and Lateralus (with Morello of all people). Those first 3 songs have been played few and far between this last year. The only other one's we missed that they have been playing every once in awhile was Pushit, Swamp Song, and Opiate. Other than that we had the best show of the year. I am hoping that I get to see Pushit next Friday in Cincy since they have a day break before and after that show. I hope we have a little bit of a special show that night.
Also to the people that did not like Tool playing roo, cant you at least respect what they are trying to do musically that has been missing in music for quite awhile. They stay as far away from the mainstream as possible, have very complex time signatures (10/8th time, and if you read how Lateralus is composed you would be very impressed with the structure of that song, just wikipedia it), and they sound near to almost better than they do on record. From everyone I talked to that was not huge on Tool before hand, they are now fans.

It looks like some video is emerging on youtube. This is great for those of us unfortunate ones who couldn't make it. I know it's not the same, but it's better than nothing.

i thoughts thats what was going to happen to a lot of people, like it did for Radiohead last year. But it didnt happen
Explain the "listening to any 90's garage band" comment for me. They made it through the 90's and still making some of the more complex, thought provoking music out right now. I am not just saying this because I am a fan of Tool, but do you really think AC and Superfly would of given them a headlining spot if they were just any "90s garage band"....i think not. Lets see you play like any instrument to the abilities of those guys and then I will take back what I have said.
I can explain my comment a little better for you masshysteria. The reason I said they sounded like any 90s garage band is because the music Tool was playing sounded exactly like the crap that used to get pumped on all those modern rock radio stations when I was in junior high. Is that clear enough?
Oh, and when AC Superfly booked Tool as a headliner, they were only trying to make money from an untapped fanbase. Just look at how the headliners have changed the past few years.

Still no explanation, and I lived through the whole 90's myself so I do not think they are categorized as a "90's garage band". If you can still muster up a better explanation I will be happy to hear it

^^^^Tool is more than just a band. It's also another way of calling you an idiot.

^^^^ my friends who went last year said radiohead was merely ok
Your friends are in a serious minority. I was lucky enough to have seen Radiohead four times prior to Bonnaroo last year (a lot for an American), so I knew how great it was going to be.
Most people at 'Roo last year had absolutely no idea that Radiohead was about melt their face. I knew it was coming.
Imo, Radiohead last year is far and away the best headliner of the last two years... as a matter of fact, I would say it was the best performance, headliner or no.
As a matter of fact, I think that Radiohead's transcendent performance last year actually hurt Tool this year. A lot of non or casual Tool fans expected to get their minds blown in the same way that Radiohead did in '06. When that didn't happen (for some), they felt it was a let down.
The fact is, Tool and Radiohead, while being two of the most original, talented, and mind-bending bands of the last 20 years, aren't at all alike. Radiohead's music is a little more easily accessible than Tool (especially stuff off of 'The Bends' and 'OK Computer').
Tool, while so original that it is almost impossible to categorize their music, is always going to be a little too 'hard' for some music fans. I understand and accept that.
I think they are unbelieveable, but I understand why some people are not huge fans.

I said they sounded like a 90s garage band (which they did). You can call them whatever you want. And the explanation was quite clear. The music Tool was playing sounded like a 90s garage band so that's what I said the music sounded like. Do you have palsy or something?

i feel sorry for your friend
TOOL was by far the best performance of Bonnaroo for me, never been a big fan but I am now...I was blown away (this coming from a "radiohead snob/elitist" haha). best drummer i've ever seen live, and the light show was sick. really wish they would've been saturday night
Tool has an absolute distinct sound. I don't know how anyone with working ears could confuse them with 90's garage bands. Maybe you've never heard 90's garage bands.

I am glad I am not the only one here trying to decipher what this guy meant as Tool being just any garage band. Most garage bands would not be selling out arenas everywhere they go, be a headliner at Bonnaroo (which is a pretty big honor), and have the musicianship that they do. Tool broke away from that alternative/grunge sound of the 90's and went there own way with psychadelic prog rock. Now if you are talking about Maynards other bands like A Perfect Circle, then you could kinda say they are a mainstream band but not Tool. I mean how many times have you seen them anywhere on TV other than getting accolades on how good there live performances are and how they try to avoid media hoopla.

Sorry guys, I stayed logged in and my idiot brother musta been posting some pretty nasty stuff from the looks of my karma. So, sorry if he offended any of you fine people. I for one thought Tool was just the thing Friday night needed - some heavy stuff to balance out the jammy stuff. And again, I apologize for my brother's ignorant ramblings.

Don't feel bad. My karma count sucks, and I still don't know what I did??? ;D

haha no worries linkovich, what are ignorant little brothers for...lol. Maybe you need to help him with his Tool music and that it is not just another 90's garage band

Dude, this is exactly what happened to me. Exactly what i was expecting, and exactly let down. I gave it a chance though
Tool rules, fuck the haters, if they don't like it that really is their loss. I have no grievance against it I'd just much rather enjoy something so unique. Tool may not be the only band with that kind of sound but who else puts on a show like that? I took some videos I'd like to share with the lovers and haters alike, hope you guys enjoy:
dont be so quick to generalize anyone who didnt LOVE the show to be a hater. Just because its not my thing, does not mean i am a 'hater', or that i hate Tool. I got respect for those who do, and i dont call you a hater for hatin on those who dont find it as enjoyable as you.
I haven't heard anyone mention how brilliantly the light show was structured, how it started off real simple and gradually became the craziest f*cking thing I've ever seen. When they first started playing I was like, "Ok, these screens are cool, but I expect more from Tool." I don't remember during what song it happened, but I noticed the top light fixtures start to lower. I wasn't sure if I was just trippin out, but they kept moving and thats when everyone knew it was about to go DOWN, or at least I did. Then after the lights got all crazy, i single laser beam was projected into the air. Through the set, the single laser beam turned into multiple laser beams, forming shapes, and then after a while it was laser PLANES not just beams, and they were different colors, and then lasers started coming in from behind the audience projecting onto the stage, and before you knew it, it was f*cking chaos! Tool blew my god damn mind! I expected nothing less!

yes, it's quite intense. The way they build the visuals with the minimalism in Jambi>Stinkfist, all the way through to the chaotic catharsis of Lateralus>Vicarious>Aenima is completely surreal and so well executed that it is simply mind-blowing.
I would never generalize to say that those who didn't LOVE the show are haters. I think the haters are the ones who completely dismiss Tool as derivative and don't give them credit for any of their artistry, if it's not your thing that's totally cool. To each his own I only meant to call out the "haters" who give them no credit. My comment really wasn't directed at you at all and I'm sorry if I was abrupt. You seem to have respect for their fans and what Tool is trying to do so I have no beef with you. Only with the completely dismissive fools out there.
This was my first time seeing Tool live and all I can say is "WOW"!! I kept telling my dad (which is 63 by the way...an actual hippie) to expect something different from any concert he'd ever been to and well, he's now a dedicated Tool fan thanks to Bonnaroo. He even made me copy my Tool CDs for him!
In other words, out of all of the shows I saw over the course of 4 days, which is MANY, Tool was the one I most enjoyed.
