I was at the TOOL show the night after they played Bonnaroo. The only thing Maynard said the whole night to the crowd was "Damn, I think I am still stoned from Bonnaroo...."
and then rocked out for another 25-30 minutes. No encore that night either, it just isn' their thing.
Danny rocked on the drums, the double bass he does is so fast and so loud.
Honestly, both Tool and The Police disappointed me but for very different reasons.
For Tool, while their music is excellent and they sounded truly awesome I prefer live music to be an experience with the band, which requires being able to see the band. I like to be able to see them play, to see them interact with each other and the audience, and it is as much visual for me as audio. While there is no doubt they rocked and their trippy cool graphics display is awesome, I could not see crap of them with the lighting and crowd, plus the jumbotrons didn't show the band. It's really a shame since they are great and play amazing (my wife is a huge fan of their drummer), but perhaps I am just not the right kind of fan for live Tool shows. I left early.
For the Police, while they really rocked a few of their songs, played well, and Sting sounds great, this is Bonnaroo and they 100% failed to step up to that challenge. Dude, I just saw Manu Chao, Gogol Bordello, The Roots ... I mean ... Come on, you better not only rock my ass off but you better put on one hell of a f'in show while you do it. And that was the failure. Not only was it a short set, but they didn't have the showmanship, the performance style, that thing that makes me love being right there with that band and that crowd at that moment. The late night Dynamites show in Troo was way more fun than the Police show, in my opinion. The Dynamites blew the damn roof off the Troo and had people dancing like crazy, packed in and flowing over the sides, in a tent that usually seemd to be where people go to sit down and chill while someone plays in their vicinity.
But I've heard voices not in the head Out in the air they called ahead Through ripped out speakers Through thick and thin They found a shelter Under my skin -Evgeny Aleksandrovitch Nikolaev
I didn't see the whole Tool show, got my spot with my friends about halfway thought but we all thought it was awesome. Only one of my pals was a real Tool fan, but none of them had ever seen them before (I had twice luckily). We all enjoyed it immensly, I think we were just messed up enough to take it all in but not get freaked out. The spot I was in (right side 200 ft back or so) was really feeling it as well, people weren't moshing or anything but there was lots of singing and exclamation from a lot of zonked out people. It wasn't the craziest Tool show I've seen before or anything (coachella 2006 takes that prize) but that's too be expected because the Bonnaroo crowd is not really inclusive with the Tool crowd. I still think most people enjoyed it in some way or another. And I mean the Tom Morrello solo was just incredible, EVERYBODY around me started going nuts when he came out. I took some videos of the show I'll be posting on youtube in the coming days, I'll keep you guys up to date on that (I hope they turn out good).
Overall Tool was great but I can easily say was not the best show of Friday. Personally I thought Tortoise and DJ shadow were the tops, I also luckily caught the Ravi Coltrane quartet which was fantastic. Again I took lots of video so I'll try and keep you guys updated so you can check them out.
Bonnaroo 2007 was awesome except for the dust and the police (like the cops, not THE POLICE, I thought they were awesome). Hard to come back to reality but I'll never forget the experience...peace ya'll.
I was hoping, though not expecting, Tom to show up with Tool, and wow! Off the chart! Def the hightlight of the show (and it was an AWESOME show!) Tool does VERY few guests, but Tom is really close to Adam and Maynard and he was very pumped after the Nightwatchman show (AWESOME as well!) so I crossed my fingers!!! Guess it payed off! ;D
Well looking at the setlist, I am not as pissed I left after Wings Pt. 1+2. Everyone told me they played "The Grudge" after Wings and I was pissed I left, but apparently alot of people at Bonnaroo don't know their Tool. However I am dissapointed I missed Anema, but it was only because I left early for SuperJam.
My take on the Tool set was that it was FARKING AMAZING! My first time seeing Tool and my first time seeing a performance at What Stage, and I loved every minute of it.
I've never liked Tool, but their show was incredible. As far as people not getting into it--I was almost frozen with awe, and assumed everyone else was too.

Long, long time lurker here. This was my first 'Roo and I have to say that TOOL was WITHOUT a doubt the greatest show I have EVER seen in my entire life. My face was tripped off for The Roots and ate even more for TOOL while waiting in the crowd and it took me an entire day and a half to get over the show. I went and saw STS9 after TOOL and could not get the show out of my mind. I felt like I was being brainwashed, and that some parts of the music was being played backwards. The light show was INTENSE. The part where the laser fans were rolling in the sky was incredible, not to mention the images on the screen behind the band. Friday was easily the best day of the weekend, and The Police were such a LET DOWN.

I'm one of those people that was disappointed to see Tool headlining this year, but I decided to give them a chance and went in will high expectations. Here's what I got:
a wasted walk to centaroo and a headache. Seriously, after hearing about their phenominal light shows and mind-expanding riffs I was really looking forward to this. If you think Tool had a good light show, I think you should go see Sound Tribe Sector 9, or better yet the Flaming Lips. Those bands know that a light show involves more than just projection screens and a few lasers in the air. And mind expansion?? Their sound was so loud I think it was mind boggling more than anything. After realizing it wasn't my thing to be there I went back to my campsite and could still hear the show and it was too loud for me to take a nap during. It was my impression that they felt higher volume means better show. Wrong.
Just my take on it. Glad the fans enjoyed it though, that's all that really matters. If anyone really got something from that show and will always remember it, then Tool probably accomplished their goal. Personally, it just wasn't for me.
I love Tool, but that show kind of sucked. The visuals and stuff were cool, but I always get this feeling that Tool is just doing their stuff to get paid and they only play music because they have to, and don't really want to. Maynard was being a dick as usual, and the audience was too: as soon as he said "no flash photography for this song please" everyone got out their camera, heh.... and there were some dicks with laser pointers. That setup was cool, and the fucking little red dots just ruin it, but whatever... They ended about 30 minutes early which kind of sucked. I wasn't expecting much from their show though.
I didn't like the Police at all beforehand, but I thought their show was pretty good. I left it a bit early though to see the Flaming Lips. It was worth it for "War Pigs"!
As my Inebriated buddy walks out of the Porto, he yells out, "Dude...I love this place...bonnaroo thinks about everything...they even put beer holders next to the toilet!"
Had to break it to him that that was the urnal. Good times good times!
I for one knew what was comming at me when I went to the Tool show. I had seen them the week before and was way way too drunk to remember everything, all I remember was HOLY Crap I was just blown away. So I made sure to stay some what sober to watch them and It was just Amazing. For the first 20 Minutes people were like this is amazing, I told them you havent seen nothing yet wait till the LAsers come at ya!!! Then they went nutz!

I agree. I was pretty close and NO ONE was into it. I thought the music was amazing and was pretty dumbfounded, but there was definitely a break in the energy feedback loop. The band was giving but it wasn't coming back. Compare the noise/energy to radiohead last year. The screams were so unbelievably loud and the dancing so intense... nothing like that this year. Maynard seemed really frustrated even, when he said "come on bonnaroo!" and some other comments. No one even tried for the encore... pretty sad. Maybe it just wasn't danceable enough? the visuals freaked people out? the vibe was not good...
The only thing I got from Tool was a headache. A lot of the crowd wasn't into the show because it wasn't any good. All these people talking about how good Tool was and they ended 30 mins. early? That is weak for any band let alone a headliner. They're supposed to be some legendary band and they can't even fill their set? Lame. If the music had been good I wouldn't even be posting but it sucked. I wish they would have put it on mute and just let the visuals play without the sh*tty music. Oh, and my splitting headache completely vanished after I left Tool early. Coincidence? Nope.

David Cross is a huge Tool fan.
More than that, they've been friends for over 10 years. Tool was on the very first episode of Mr. Show, and did a few random appearances over the show's four seasons.
This was my first Tool show and they totally rocked! I had cut my foot the night before Bonnaroo (what about THAT?) but this did not stop me from jumping up and down when they started. Infact, I don't think I stopped until the end of The Pot when my foot was telling me to sit the f*ck down and stop aggravating it. The lazors were amazing and Maynard showed some nice cheeky humor. Best line of the night was surely "I smell patchouli!" although I could have smacked him round the head when he started bragging about his nice shower and air conditined trailer. I left that set a fully fledged fan and will for sure be seeing them live again. Morello coming out was frickin awesome, he really needs to drop that solo sh*t though, I thought his set sucked big time. Stick to what you know sir.
Chefchick - karma for that photo, that's awesome.
I thought the Police were great, they sounded terrific. Every Breath You Take was awesome as was The King of Pain. We left at the end of the Police but I missed the Lips because nobody in our group wanted to wait the hour to see them . The dust and heat of the day had taken it's toll I'm afraid.
So, regarding the designated moshing area, was any of that actually going on? I wasn't nearly close enough to see, and I dared not go near.
Yes, I was in it. Not a Tool fan, but I followed some friends. Ended up in the mosh pit and danced my ass off. (looked this AM and it was back damn it). Had an awsome time!!!!!!!!!

anyone videotape this show or see anyone doing so? i didnt get down at tool nearly as much as I thought I would and Im a huge fan but this was the 1st tool show i have gotten to see. been a fan over 10 years and just never caught em. but the reason that I wasnt getting down much was simply that I was struck speechless and in complete AWE the entire time! what an amazing show! i would love to see the whole thing on vid but I dont think that at&t simulcast it.
I'm kind of a casual Tool fan, I suppose, but I wasn't at all prepared for their set. One of the most intense live shows I've ever seen, and that's saying something.
I spent most of it just watching the screens, but I started to get a little tired, so close to the halfway point I headed down towards the front right side and just sat for a bit....until Tom Morello came on, that is. God. That wasn't something I was expecting to see, and it was amazing. Finally, when Aenima came on, I noticed a little bit of a ruckus down front. The security guards watching the pit (which was barricaded off by this time) were distracted for maybe 45 seconds, and two people chose that moment to move the barrier and get out of the pit, to beat the traffic I assume. Normally I don't do anything to risk getting thrown out of concerts (jumping barriers usually qualifies), but hey, it's Bonnaroo, right? I saw my window of opportunity, and I took it, and I spent Aenima in the very very front row, losing my mind. I just went crazy, mentally and physically, along with all the other people around me, and it was one of the most intense experiences I've ever had. I dragged myself back to my tent with the intent of resting up and heading in for DJ Shadow and some dancing, but I ended up passing out. Oh well. I needed the sleep, since I'd had none in over 24 hours.
Also, MJK is adorable and funny, and I never thought I would say this, but he's pretty much now officially my Favorite Male Voice in Rock. How much more on point and amazing live can one be? Not to mention the fact that he doesn't take the "LEADER!!!!!" position onstage. Best Thing Ever. To think that Cedric Bixler Zavala's spot on my list would be overtaken...I'd never have said this day would come.
So, I got a great live show, and Tool got a new fan. Fair enough trade, I think. Now if only I hadn't passed up the chance to see them earlier this year!
The production aspect of Tool was cool - lasers, screens, lights, etc. The music was pretty terrible, in my opinion. I definitely have no interest in seeing Tool again.

I take it you're not a Tool fan? I'm not sure how anyone could say the music was terrible. Even my daughter, who is not a Tool fan, acknowledged that it was a great show musically and visually.

in what way was the music terrible? do you have any authority to make that claim?
neways- i thought maynard was trying to send out a differnent unique message to the crowd than most other bands. that hippie vibe is such a bunch of bull. i mean its like a mob mentality... does anybody truly believe they are making some kind of meaningful change in the world by irreverently using substances over and over again with no real purpose. its like bonnaroo is the perfect way to make people pascifistic(not saying everyone is put under) because it lets people who are opposed to conventiality feel as if they found an outlet for change and freedom (while really just veggin out). i thought tool was a refreshing reminder of this bonnaroo=gov. testing
I thought the show was awesome. A little loud, but still amazing.
Was anyone near the right side of the soundboard area when that girl flipped out? She had to have been on something. It took 6 or 7 people just to hold her down. She kept trying to attack the safety people when they pointed a flashlight at her to check out her eyes. I think the music may have been a little too much for her to handle.
