The Biden administration plays to NeoLibs and NeoLibs ONLY. All of this is for the reelection which of course isn't pleasing progressives OR conservatives.
This is total BS. I've been seeing posts like this around Twitter/X for a week, after which I check the numbers and they're nowhere near the top 5 waves of the last five years. Sure, the numbers go up a little bit every year around the late Nov - early Jan holiday gathering window, but just because someone posts something on social media doesn't mean that it's true.

Maybe I spoke too soon. The presence of COVID-19 in Massachusetts wastewater is off the charts and genuinely is at the second highest level ever.

Those numbers were just updated and, thankfully, they're dropping as quickly as they rose. Chalk it up to J1.N hitting in the Thanksgiving to New Year's Day holiday gathering window.
I've now had COVID three times and, while the last two times were easily enough lived through during the positive period, my big problem has been that even mild cases of COVID have been followed, weeks or months later, with various and mostly new inflammatory conditions. In 2020, I had been diagnosed with mild bursitis in my right knee and it was never really a problem for me at all -- just a bit of very mild soreness -- until the first week of December when I walked down stairs and felt a pop and then strong pain in my knee. A week after testing negative at the end of my August bout with COVID, a GI tract issue which first got serious months after having had COVID in late Spring 2022 and had been doing better at that time, suddenly flared up for three weeks and then got much better.
"Long COVID" can be a misnomer, because it suggests that one or more COVID symptoms simply hang in there for a long time. For me, it's been a case of inflammation-driven medical issues appearing, reappearing, or getting worse due to the inflammation caused by COVID.

For sure and that’s good. Lots of people wearing masks again and I would if I was sick and going to the store or anything.

Maybe people aren’t masking during a spike because friggin DOCTORS and NURSES at the OFFICE aren’t. My girlfriend came home from her annual and said none of the staff was masked. Like..wtf.
I had a dr appointment here in San Diego last week and all staff members were wearing masks. Guessing there are different rules/guidelines in different areas/providers.
I've got a trip coming up and don't want to get sick and miss it, so I wore a mask everywhere this weekend. It was kind of a hassle and brought back a lot of memories, but ultimately not that bad.
When I went to the doctor for my wrist, most doctors were not wearing masks but a bunch of nurses were chin diapering it. I wore one since there is a spike right now. I have only had covid once even since working in bars somehow. I don't really feel like I do anything special.
I am really curious as to why some people catch it multiple times and some others have only caught it once or never still.

Me too. I've only caught it once - back in December 2022, but with multiple close exposures at work and with people I hung with on a trip to Las Vegas this past December, as well as multiple encounters with people I'm pretty sure were walking around with it in Mexico City (that petite dry cough) in early January, it's been a freakin' miracle that I never caught it (and yes I tested). I did get the latest version of the Moderna vax in September, and my theory is that my one bout was with the XBB strain from which the current strain is descended from, so those two things combined are making for robust immunity.
At my latest dr.'s appts. the doctors have been wearing masks but not so much the nurses/medical assistants.

I got a Novavax booster a few hours ago, my first booster since my 3rd Moderna shot in Nov '21 (and two cases of COVID since then). I was shaken by the 2-3 weeks of chest pain and afib I had after my 3rd Moderna shot (and only after that third one). I was a huge outlier on that, since young men are much more susceptible to that than old dudes.
Feeling really good right now, compared to my last booster. I'm expecting the usual hour or two of fever and tiredness tomorrow, but I got all of my grocery shopping out of the way before the weekend and I'm just going to sit out the last two days of the cold spell with comfort foods, podcast episodes, and NFL playoffs. #MakeTaylorCry #BillsMafia
The whole "limited exposure to the virus to maintain antibody production" thing seems to have worked out for me. I've had my mask off a couple of times per week on average for long enough to grab a bite to eat somewhere, pop into a CVS to buy something, pull the mask off while onstage at an open mic, etc. Didn't get sick again this fall, and hopefully got just enough exposure to keep the antibody factory chugging along.
Given that we may be a year away from living in a totalitarian nightmare, I'm determined to get out and enjoy life as much as I can this year. I've already got four shows and three open mics on my calendar for February, usually a beyond slow month in the frigid northeast. I went out in an ice storm the other night to sling poetry onstage in Harvard Square; I didn't want to start the year by cancelling a plan due to weather.
Is it just me, or is this newest variant of Covid hitting harder than the past few? When I got it in 2022, it was a nothingburger, but I'm sicker than I've been in a very long time right now.

It does seem that those that are getting it, are getting a worse version from what my friends have stated. I somehow missed it again, even though I danced with a bunch of people that caught it. I hope you start feeling better soon being sick sucks especially bad cases of sickness.

So, they're now officially recommending adults 65 and older get a second XBB.1.5 vaccine shot...and I'm wondering if I should, too, in another couple of months. I'm not in that age range, but the vaccine's protection waning after six months isn't something restricted to older adults, so would it be a bad thing for an otherwise healthy middle-aged person to get another shot, or would it just be more protection? I'm especially pondering this because it seems like the XBB.1.5 shot offers something like 54% protection against even symptomatic infection with the current dominant variant, which is pretty, pretty good.
My last shot was in October, so I've got all next month to think about it, I suppose. I guess I'm going to talk to my doctor about it, but it kind of feels like we're all flying blind on these sorts of decisions right now.
It contains iota-carrageenan, which has been shown in some studies to inhibit viruses, and there's one study out there that showed people using it to get marginally less COVID than people not using it.
The science is still somewhat sketchy, but of what I've researched, it has the most actual testing behind it vs. some of the other stuff.

Learned recently that the guidance on isolation for respiratory viruses generally (including Covid) has been changed from 5 days isolation + 5 days of masking to just waiting 24 hours after the symptoms have overall improved and the fever is gone and essentially taking other reasonable precautions when possible. Feels so much more realistic on people, 5+5 felt so strict, and at least for me personally led to the skipping of a lot of concerts, social events, etc because I’d been sick a few days ago but felt better now.
welp, today marks my 3rd time having covid. mild symptoms so far but does anyone have any specific tips for home remedies? i dont think i qualify for paxlovid either

What’re your symptoms?
really just fatigue/dry throat. i guess some mild brain fog

I have a personal steamer that helps with sore or dry throat, I swear by it whenever I'm under the weather, COVID was no exception. I also love ginger tea with lemon and honey, throat lozenges, so much water that I think I'm going to die, and lots of sleep and laying down.

Can you get/do you have a netti bottle for sinus rinsing? Did that twice a day the last time I had it and it really helped. Also, if you can get some Betadine, gargling with that helped me (and, supposedly, helps reduce viral load in the upper throat, although there are no RCTs on that).

1 part whiskey 1 part lemon juice (squeezed) 1 part honey
Heat up whiskey/lemon a little, add honey and drink plenty. More a throat soother, and it may not offer that much in the way of rehydration.
You can heat honey, but there can be some type of issue with toxins if it goes much over 100F.
