so FestiveOwl is reporting that Ultra is being canceled. I figured we probably now need a thread for this, because its looking like a bunch of the early spring fests could get axed. I have to imagine the folks over at Bonnaroo are having conversations as well.

You can bet that there are some heated discussions going on at a few of these producer offices over who gets paid and who doesn't depending on if the producer or the local authority cancels the show. Hello, insurance company, we need to make a claim....
SXSW said they got the all clear from gov't officials and Okee is still going on FWIW
SXSW is a little different due to the huge economic relief it gives to the city ($300+ million) and the fact that it'll be a near impossibility to deny hundreds of thousands of people from visiting the city overall. Their reasoning was, without SXSW officiating, it'll be much harder to control the masses of people in town. The virus will spread (if here) with or without SXSW. Of course, with how many brands that have pulled out and how many companies that are denying their reps from flying to SX, it's gonna look drastically different.

It's much easier to cancel an outdoor festival.
that's an interesting angle actually but couldn't you make the argument for LA in regards to Coachella or even Miami for Ultra? or that Bonnaroo gives Coffee County/Manchester an enormous amount of revenue?

Not a festival, but if Despacio at the Knockdown Center in April gets canceled, I am going to straight-up openly weep. I have had a shitty, shitty first quarter of 2020 - knee surgery, failed IVF cycle, my band broke up, and I lost my job - and I was really counting on being able to dance myself clean, there.
That said, of course, this is much bigger than one dance party, and me worrying about that kind of makes me a selfish prick given *waves around at everything*. Sorry.

It's also not overnight camping, some of the venues are also really spread out so it's not as many people in one spot.

Okee makes me feel better about festival season
It's possible but I don't have the specific numbers for those festivals. The impact SXSW gives to small businesses is hugely understated. Some bars and restaurants I know off the top of my head pretty much plan the whole year around SXSW and the money it brings in. While people can just got eat or drink at an outdoor festival, during SXSW, your money is going straight back to those businesses.

We will be there and we will dance and it will be glorious
Not the US, but more than a few tours and productions have been cancelled in Australia bc logistically it doesn’t make sense to come out here if you can’t do an Asian leg as well. The Marina Bay Sands in Singapore have rescheduled or cancelled all spring events and a lot of the big promoters here are actually really worried about the impact. My company is already drastically down this quarter compared to this time last year.
People just don’t want to go to large events right now, so they’re not buying tickets. Pretty ridiculous overreaction imo.

I feel you man. Lost my gf of 3 years tonight and some other horrible shit happened last month so I need my festivals and shows at the very least.

Wow it's oddly comforting to know 2020 has been not just bad for me. GF of 2 years and I ended it on Feb 8, then I spent that entire following week by my grandfathers side in the hospital. Held his hand as he passed on valentines day morning. This new decade has come in rough for a few of us

It’s been a wild year for me too. Coachella 2020 seemed perfect and it still does. I like our odds. That being said, we shouldn’t invest all our emotional value into one weekend.

probably but if the city already really doesn’t want the fest there they’re obviously gonna be happier to cancel it
Theres plenty of political motivation for the city to cancel Ultra. They finally got the right scenario to do it and keep their hands clean of any wrongdoing as its veiled in the matter of public safety. Plenty of people will still go to Miami because they cant get refunds on flights and hotels. Plus all of the club shows and the conference anyway, there just wont be a festival at the end of it. The city will still get some revenue albeit much lower than expected, but they wont have to fork over a lot of overtime to law enforcement for being around the fest now and everything else that goes with it. Its pretty much the final straw for Ultra and Miami, I doubt it will return next year there.

My grandmother passed away yesterday as well... at least I think. Mom said she did, aunt said she didn't. Being in Australia and everyone else in the US means no one is answering text messages or phone calls and I'm just kinda in the dark now. No idea what's going on and wondering if I need to make an emergency trip home has me feeling very anxious. I worked from home today, but I really need all my distractions right now.
With that being said, I'm supposed to go to Hot Chip tomorrow night and I'm not sure I'm feeling up for it.

Have you met us?
Looking forward to festivals is how i’ve survived adulthood so far
