I remember reading an Isaac Brock (Modest Mouse frontman) interview once. In it the interviewer said how some fans were pissed off that a MM song was used in a commercial, and he basically said something like (paraphrasing), "Well when you have to decide between appeasing all of your fans, or being able to pay your electricity bill the next month, it's not a hard decision."
I think some fans get this idea that just because a band has multiple albums out and tours, it mean's they have it made and can live off their earnings the rest of their life. I'd sure as hell put my song in a car/jewelry/whatever commercial if it meant a nice check.
This. In an era where albums are rarely purchased now a days, aside from touring (keep in mind they do have to pay crew and for equipment) this is how they make that paper.
IMO they haven't "sold out" even though Madison Ave views them as great background music for their ads. Good for them for making some extra bucks.
I think The Black Keys have done a great job of keeping to their blues roots even as they have released more "commercially acceptable" material. Thickfreakness may possess a bit more rawness than their recent stuff but the underlying sound and energy is still there. I'm stoked to see them again this year!

Exactly. They don't accept every offer that is thrown their way. They view the commercials as a way to reach a wider audience while also paying for their rent.
So I had The Big Come Up back in the day, and am digging Brothers...but have literally nothing in between. I probably won't be able to digest everything by June, so between Thickfreakness, Chulahoma, Rubber Factory, etc where should I start?
Hoping to at least be familiar with some of the "hits" and the songs they're most likely to play at Roo
I remember when some Wilco fans got upset about Wilco using a song in a car commercial and Jeff Tweedy came out and said that it wasn't the first time and Wilco has done it with many of their songs.
It pays the band and gives them wider exposure. I don't have a problem with it.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure Wilco used seriously half of the songs from Sky Blue Sky in Volkswagen commercials.

for an album I would reccomend thickfreakness and/or magic potion But, if you can't digest enough by june, and you want to familiarize yourself with the songs they play live go look up their setlists on setlist.fm and jsut download those songs

I only have brothers and attack & release. They both have some cool riffs and grooves to them. But I tend to get bored of brothers. I've been force-feeding myself a&r because I could hear there was something special going on in there and didn't feel it right away. I'm beginning to really enjoy the album, although I am thinking it plays better live. My guess is they're studio work feels a little routine-and-processed and that their live stuff will be more dynamic.

you have to see them live. the sets are so raw, its great. the way i have described a black keys show since i first got into them several years a go is an old school, dirty, sweaty, rock show.
and for those asking what to get into ill check tomorrow to see if i can find last years roo setlist and post it on here and include what albums they are from. also if u check page 2 i listed setlists from 2 shows i attended this year(the cleveland show is a bit of a special occasion since their hometown is akron, they are known to put on special shows there).

You'll definitely be able to digest it all by June. I hadn't really given these guys a shot until a couple months ago and now I'm in love with them. They are in constant iPod rotation with MMJ and Radiohead.
If you already have The Big Come Up and Brothers, I'd say go for Magic Potion next. Then Attack & Release, Rubber Factory, Chulahoma, they're all great.
Really awesome gym music, too. That's a great way to get into bands. Get those endorphines going.

Love Brothers, not as big of a fan of Attack and Release. I'll have to check out their other stuff soon. They are definitely great live, their late night set last year was great.

yes! They are definitely on my mp3 player for when I go to the gym. I don't know if any of you have heard them but the Black Keys/Big Boi mash ups are perrrrfect for the gym.

Dan was a soccer jock who idolized Dave Matthews and G. Love and the Special Sauce. Bands I despised. He was a real macho type who walked around town like a bulldog. He listened to Howard Stern, called his girlfriends "babe" and referred to indie pop as "gay."
All their albums are GREAT but each have a little different personality than the others. If you want the more straight forward stuff go with Rubber, Thick and Magic. I find Brothers and A&R to be a little 'spacier' if that makes any sense. Personally I don't think anything touches Hurt Like Mine from Thickfreakness. If that tune can't get you into the Keys then you should probably just give up and watch a different show at Bonnaroo. Maybe that's a little agressive of me but you get my point, there are some serious standouts off every album is what I was trying to say.

Indeed, The Keys are killed it at Coachella. I didn't think much of it before, but this is reminding me of how great they were at Lolla last year and how fucking excited I am for their set (and here's hoping Pat shows up for the Superjam!)

They've said that they were offered alot of money to sell a song for a commercial hocking some mayo in the UK and turned it down. They felt bad for that and would sell any song to anyone .... except Hummer. They won't sell to them.

^^^ Yea they felt bad because they turned it down to keep their artistic integrity but then realized that it may be better to be able to pay your rent.
Actually I have been rocking out to these guys for the past month. Ex GF had burned me some CDs and Magic potion, Bothers, and Attack & Release have been burning up my player. The other albums are on my Rhapsody. Not sure why it took so long before I found these cats, but I am very excited to see them rock it at Roo. They are my priority #1!
