I would love to have Dave play Bonnaroo if all his frat boy fans would stay home. Don't get me wrong... many DMB fans are great people. However, a large majority of the fans he attracts are douche bag frat boys who get wasted and act a fool. This past sumer I went to both nights of DMB at Deer Creek. If I had a dollar for every fight I witnessed I could probably pay for next years roo ticket. On top of that many of the people their just wanted to socialize. Many of the people around me spent the entire show gossiping and paid very little attention to the band they paid $50 to see. To top it all off I was welcomed back to my campsite by a burning couch. I don't know what is so cool about burning couches, but frat boys get off on it. They picked a spot 20 feet from my tent and started burning couches. It didn't take long until every frat boy douche bag in the campground (I stayed on sight at the Varizon campground) was running circles around and jumping over the burning couch. There must have been at least 100 of them. As they circled the flaming couch they all chanted one more couch, one more couch. Sure enough in came another couch, and another, and another, and another (no clue where they got all these couches). Before to long the cops showed up to put an end to the douche baggery. However the crowd resisted and began chanting fuck the cops and throwing beer bottles @ the cop car. Next thing you know there are about 50 police officers in full riot gear (some of them had "corn" sniffing dogs with them). Long story short: after an awesome show all I wanted to do was come back to camp, relax and eat some corn. Instead I spent the evening guarding my cooler (I caught several people trying to steal beer out of it) and making sure they didn't burn my tent or any of my belongings. Then the corn dogs show up so no eating for me. Frat boy DMB fans ruined my good time. Once again... I love DMB... just not the people he attracts.
PS. This incident is on youtube please check it out for yourselves. Search DMB couch fire, and or DMB burning down the couch.

Haha I'm sure it was scary at the time, but the way you told that story was hilarious. Anytime anyone mentions DMB fans aren't that bad I will quote this story, thank you sir.
Note: I know this wasn't the whole crowd and I'm sure their were a bunch of music fans who just wanted to hear the bsides and have a good time, but if people don't think the frat boy thing doesn't ring true for Dave they're blind.

He put on a crazy good show here in Sept. No white-hats anywhere, and certainly no couches (although that is a damn good story!). They opened the lot up at 8am for tail-gating, and it definately had the feel of the WalMart parking lot...if ya know what I mean.
while DMB does get a lot of douch bag fans, so too does Phish, U2, Beastie Boys, Snoop, and some of the other people that either have headlined roo or are rumored to headline. The worst show I was ever at in the sense of fans being a-holes was the Mars Volta, but at roo all of the fans were chill and there for the music

I don't think the crowd will be an issue. Like I'm sure people were worried about the crowd Metallica would attract, and I didn't see one problem at Metallica in '08.
I worked a DMB show last November in Jersey and after Robert Randolph opened (he killed), Dave put on one of the most boring shows I've ever had to sit through. Not even that the music itself was bad, it just had no energy and it was just putting me to sleep. Long story short, if Dave headlines, the crowd will be the least of my worries.

maybe i wrong but i think tha differance might be that while alot of metalica fans were tryin to prove to tha people who thought theyd be rowdy, violent, shitstarting rooruiners how wrong they reallly were by 'being on their best behavior" (for lack of better term)....alot of dmb fans will show feelin emboldened and entitled to act 'how ever they damn well please" 9for lack of a better term) because they feel like roo is 'their house'...wether theyre veterans or just scensters! maybe im wrong here but thats how i see it!
and as far as your boring dmb experence....i really dont know what else you expected! while he might have been some what relevant way back when.....hes just straight up adult contemporary bs now! ive said it before and i standd by it 100%....dave mathews is nothing more than this generations jimmy buffett! (ie...very safe very bland background music for cluless pseudo hippies and out of touch parents and obliviuos teens and unconcerned frat boys to drink and feel 'wild & crazy' to!)
sorry if any of you takes this personally but every dmb show ive been to and way too many of tha fans ive met have proven this to me time and tim eagain!

I don't think that was the case. I also think that Bonnaroo didn't get a full Metallica crowd that would have those people, but I think that the metal scene and the jam scene have a lot in common. They are two groups of people who love music that generally gets crapped on and/or ignored, who go to shows to have a great time and share the experience with a couple thousand of their closest friends. Not to mention that both groups are generally very open and protective of the other people at the shows. I do security at shows, and the metal crowds take care of each other like no other crowd you'll really see. Sure there are fights, but 98.5% of the crowd will not only help you when your working, but will help each other and take care of people they've never even met.

I half agree with you here. I wasn't expecting much, but I was expecting more than I got. I kind of agree with comparing Dave and Jimmy Buffett, even I will admit that Dave is way more talented, and the crowd at the Dave show I was at was half frat boys who didn't know any better, but the other-better half were people who really love what he does and the music that he makes, and you gotta respect that.
I This past sumer I went to both nights of DMB at Deer Creek. It didn't take long until every frat boy Summers breeze bag in the campground (I stayed on sight at the Varizon campground) was running circles around and jumping over the burning couch..
Lesson one would be to stay at a different camp ground. There are around 10 of them surrounding Deer Creek. All of them provide transpo to and from the show, most have shaded areas, and they're extremely lax. We had a cop camping near us this year and he could have cared less what we were doing. He even drove his cop car there.
I've seen DMB around 40 times. I almost didn't go this year because I was burned out on them. But now that Tim Reynolds, Rashawn Ross, and Jeff coffin are playing with them, they are on fire. I know it's not cool to like DMB, but I still love them. I'd love to have them at roo because they collaborate with a ton of good musicians. Warren Haynes, Trey Anastasio, Santana, etc... They love to have guests. This tour, they were on fire. Best shows I've seen out of them in years. If you haven't seen them recently, give them a chance. The new album is awesome.

And wow, you're like a walking, talking infomercial to turn people away from Pearl Jam and Ohio State, aren't you? Before you started posting here I quite liked Pearl Jam and was indifferent towards OSU, now I find myself wishing that Eddie Vedder falls down a mine shaft or that Columbus is infested with locusts

^tha most dicknose filled crowd ive ever been in was at tha last sts9 show i went to! ive seen them several times before i never experienced any were near this level of obnoxious prickdom...so i gotta chalkit up to some of there openers....ghostland observatory and bassnectar to be more specific! i actualy walked out before tha show was over cause i honestly felt like i was gonna od on pretentious assh0le!
Meh. In all honesty I wouldn't mind. ....... It'd be kind like Bruce Springsteen fer me; I'd see 'em but wouldn't be staying the whole show or nappin' during some of it.
I hope not, DMB would be a waste of a top ten line up slot. Then again so would the Rolling Stones but a lot of people on inforoo seem certain they are going to be there. Then again if he played Sunday it would be a great reason to get an early start home
Worst crowd I ever experienced was either White Zombie in 95 where a whole bunch of bikers up front took to tossing people around and trying to start fights or when I saw MMJ during Z and everyone around me was chatting like it was social hour while MMJ tore the place up.
Usually Bonnaroo has an agreement with bands not to play in the same area near the same time, but there have been acceptions, such as a few select headliner acts.
I used to not be much of a fan of DMB, but after seeing them at Bonnaroo a year or so ago; I'd have to say I'd love to see them at the farm again, they put on a really great performance.
If they're not your cup of tea, that's cool; Phish really wasn't mine, but don't kill the vibe for other people.
I have no problems with the fans, I just think the majority of his music is boring, and overplayed. I have pretty much felt this way since the first time I saw them back in 93.

We've always heard that but have had no confirmation. Many of the smaller Roo acts play in Nashville around the Roo dates.
I said this earlier but no one seemed to notice, so I will state again: DMB is playing the CMA Awards show TOMORROW NIGHT, not the CMA Festival next summer as the OP stated (at least not that we know of yet). So we can't make an assumption that DMB will be at Roo based on the fact that he'll be close by.

Ahh. gotcha, I must have over-skimmed through the thread. Thanks for the clarification.

I totally agree, especially about Phish, there was a lot of Phish phan D-Baggery around me during the Beasties set Friday night at Roo '09'. They definitely made it a less enjoyable experience for me. I actually ended up skipping Phish's Friday set. I guy can only take so much, ya know.
i'd kind of like to see dmb. and i've got a pretty good feeling that they will be there at roo'10. i'm not even worried about dbag fans, because as it's been said before, plenty of bands have dbag fans. i'm worried about dmb being on the lineup for way more selfish reasons.
i don't want roo to sell out before i have the money to buy our tickets. dmb has fans in the numbers similar to phish. the difference between dmb fans an phish phans is dmb fans generally have money. and they'll use that money to buy roo tix. before i have mine.
