They need to just admit theyre a fucking sausage fest and stop trying to soften their bullshit.
This one thing I will give Riot Fest a sliver of credit for: unlike a lot of other comparable punk/buttrock fests, they actually do seem to give a shit about booking women/artists of color (with the caveat it's nowhere close to what it should be), especially on the main stages. As an example, I'll be honest, I had no idea who Lunachicks were prior to their playing this festival, and now I'm a fan!
Hot AF today and surprisingly crowded. But seems like people were more evenly dispersed between stages than past years. Surprised by how much I enjoyed Drug Church, but Offspring were def the highlight of the day for me. Ready to do it all again tomorrow!
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.

Man do I love The Offspring. So many, many killer tunes. To me, a HOF band. Assume they'll never get in. OutKast isn't in and that's quacked up.
Got rail for St. Vincent as well. She didn't step on me, but at one point when she was holding the cymbal stand, I legitimately thought she was going to throw it at me...
I’ve talked so much shit but really there’s as many people here for Pavement as theree have been for any other headliner.
Pavement was great. Obviously nothing groundbreaking but it's good to see that they genuinely seem to be having a good time playing together. Which never used to be a gimme.
I enjoyed my day of Riot Fest, I don't think I caught a bad set.
-Pelle from the Hives remains one of the most entertaining front-men in music today. They must have been dying in those suits but he was absolutely cooking with the mic.
-Heath's set was plagued by technical issues, but when they were playing they sounded good.
-Manchester Orchestra have pretty much stopped playing Cope songs the last few times I've seen them, so I enjoyed hearing these longs live again. I thought that with an hour long slot they would get more than one additional song on the back end, but Andy kind of stretched out the album and filled up their time.
-Beach Bunny had a fantastic crowd, most of the set was a big audience sing-along. They also debuted their new song that's being released Wednesday, it sounded good.
-I sacrificed a double dose of Spoon to go get some dinner (I was at their aftershow at Metro the night before). I had good luck with the chicken shawarma last year so I got it again this year. Really, really solid festival food, would recommend.
-Annie was awesome, some people are just born to be on a stage. Faulkner is a good addition to her band. I would have liked some more of the older stuff but I get that she's promoting new music, so no complaints.
-Gen Xers were camped in front of the AAA stage all day, talking through every other set, pounding IPAs, and waiting for Pavement. It was a great set in the sense that they played every single Pavement song I know, and the band really seemed to be enjoying themselves. Had no idea Malkmus moved to Chicago.
-Beck brought his lounge singer festival set back to Riot Fest. He sounded great and I was impressed that Faulkner was pulling double duty. I left during Loser to beat the crowd on the CTA, so no issues getting home.
It was a really great day of live music to cap off my Riot Fest weekend, and as a free festival Riot Fest remains one of the best values in live entertainment. I hope they come back again next year.
Had to make an unplanned trip to Nebraska Monday, but I'm back home with a LIST and related Riot Fest observations! This year was the most time spent at the park during festival hours due to our Airbnb being relatively close. It was also the most intense weather, with me wishing for death at least once each day. REGARDLESS, I had another fun year, despite not seeing any of the headliners (outside a few Pavement songs). Here is this year's top 10 list:
10. Pennywise - It was fun when Fat Mike came out for a Bad Religion cover. It was fun when everyone was on stage for Bro Hymn. It was a fun set. 09. Brutus - While the vocals could have been louder in the mix, it was a super captivating set for so early in the day. Being able to belt out those songs while playing drums is incredibly impressive! 08. Drug Church - I'm not the biggest fan of their recorded stuff, but live is such a different experience. The frontman is so INTENSE and says everything with SUCH DELIBERATION, you can't help but be drawn in! 07. Laura Jane Grace w/ Catbite - It was so weird seeing LJG without a guitar! But she took frontwomaning very seriously and was basically moving the entire time. High energy, fast passed set and everyone seemed to be having a blast! 06. Pixel Grip - I was very excited to catch them again after opening for Health. It's neat seeing bands take the big stage for the first time, and they killed it! The frontwoman's signature scowl kept breaking into a smile so you could tell they were enjoying themselves as well! 05. The Hives - Not many bands that have been around for +20 years can open AND close a festival set with new material and manage to keep the crowd engaged the entire time. The Hives can and did. 04. NOFX night 2 - Tightest set and best song choice for me personally. Banter was also at a reasonable level. Glad I got to see them all three nights! 03. St. Vincent - I've been trying to see her for years, and she did NOT DISAPPOINT! The stage production was SICK, and I got close enough to fear for my life on a couple occasions. Love the more 'unhinged' persona she's taken on this album cycle! 02. The Offspring Aftershow + Smash - Just going to lump these two together because I had an equally great time at each. The Offspring were my quintessential hs band. However, Dexter's voice sounded awful last album cycle and with all the Greg K drama, I was kind of prepared never to see them again. But if this was the last time, I left satisfied. The new album is going to blow. 01. Saxsquach - I will not be elaborating further. HM to Home Front, Spiritual Cramp, and Sprints. Probably would have enjoyed each set more if I wasn't so gosh dang hot/hot/wet!
Riotland was neat, but I prefer the stage setup from previous years. I hope the venue changeup didn't damage the brand too much, and they will continue having success in Douglass park. See ya next year!
