Holy shit Texas is ordering schools to open in the fall as well. Even if Texas and Florida were to completely shut down right now which they’re not going to do, they still wouldn’t peak till August (when school starts). Not to mention ICE basically forcing universities to open next semester. They’re giving teachers a death sentence.
This is insanity.
All while we hit 10k cases yesterday (record high) along with record highs in deaths, hospitalizations and ventilator use.

Slightly more than coincidental that the dangerous administration is looking to pressure states to open schools so we can pretend like everything is fine. Immediately thereafter, the governors of Texas and Florida announced that schools will be back in session in the fall. Shitheads.
That's so fucking stupid. We have one too up in Shreveport/Bossier City named Danny McCoromick. I called his office this morning and left him a message asking him if your body is your private property - why doesn't that apply to women? Stupid blovating cocksuckers.
I'm starting my MBA next year and the impact that the ICE announcement has had on programs is incredible. I know Harvard/MIT are suing, but if for some reason it's allowed, it's going completely decimate the graduate school landscape. Fortunately my program at the moment is hybrid so students should be fine, but the lack of internationals will kill the experience for many other programs that plan to be 100% virtual starting in the fall.
This whole thing makes me think pursuing an academic career here in the long term might not be feasible anymore.

This is all going to lead to an international student/worker brain drain that's going to economically fuck us for a long time.

I work at a large university and someone in our risk/compliance office made a great point that many grad students wouldn't even be allowed to take classes remotely if they aren't in the US due to export controls. This will have a profound effect on university research as well, much of it is completed by grad students.
Do you want to dance while also thinking about all the ways you've failed as a human?

Oof, just read a bunch of dispiriting vaccine stuff.
Somebody please post a picture of their cute animal friend, STAT.
Oh no :/ whats the latest?
Mostly that ChAdOx, which seemed like our best hope for something available this year/beginning of next year, didn't really protect monkeys from contracting the virus. They got it, but just as a nasal infection...which, you know, great, no pneumonia, but it also looks like they would've still tested positive in a PCR swab, and likely also have been infectious...which means it's not really that great a vaccine in terms of allowing normal life stuff.
This led me down a rabbit hole of reading about the vaccine race, in general, and I guess it just seems like we're farther away than I thought. That's probably on me for buying into some of the optimistic takes on the process, but still. Also, the fact that antibody response to the virus seems to fade after 2-3 months has led to some speculation that we may not actually be able to create a sterilizing vaccine for this thing. If it's, like, an annual booster like the flu shot, or whatever, that's cool, but if it's something where people would have to be getting shots every 3 months, that's not really that feasible/viable.
I dunno. I was really hoping something would be getting rolled out by January, and everything I read today makes it seem like, even if everything does go right with the candidates out there now, that's not likely.

yeah this "maybe only 3ish months immunity" thing is so fucking scary :/ blehhhhhhh

also jorgeandthekraken, per this article one of the scientists running the oxford trials is claiming the vaccine will provide immunity that lasts for several years, since the vaccine produces significantly more antibodies then those generated from patients naturally recovering from COVID-19.
of course this is all "might", but we should know a lot more by this Fall.
i can't promise you everything will be OK, but it's a lot easier for a journalist to write a doomer article that gets clicks then it is to parse positivity out of the uncertainty inherent in vaccine science.

I'm getting tested at noon tomorrow.
Fuck yeah! Long story but this friend I've let crash at my house came into contact with it... probably multiple times because they're irresponsible. Health department called to warm her after she already had symptoms. fever, cough, fatigue, no sense of smell or taste.....
Exciting stuff really. I've pretty much stayed at the shop and at home for months. Now there's a chance I've helped spread it to several people with serious risk factors. I'm very much not happy about helping this person out.
