After 14 days strict quarantine, Kyle tested positive today. He got a fast result and now I'm freaking out again.
How is he feeling? How are you feeling? Can you get a fast test?
He feels fine. I'm getting tested tomorrow at the same place and demanding one. I think I feel ok. My allergies have been super bad and I've had headaches but no fever.
Fuck yeah! Long story but this friend I've let crash at my house came into contact with it... probably multiple times because they're irresponsible. Health department called to warm her after she already had symptoms. fever, cough, fatigue, no sense of smell or taste.....
Exciting stuff really. I've pretty much stayed at the shop and at home for months. Now there's a chance I've help spread it to several people with serious risk factors. I'm very much not happy about helping this person out.
Mostly that ChAdOx, which seemed like our best hope for something available this year/beginning of next year, didn't really protect monkeys from contracting the virus. They got it, but just as a nasal infection...which, you know, great, no pneumonia, but it also looks like they would've still tested positive in a PCR swab, and likely also have been infectious...which means it's not really that great a vaccine in terms of allowing normal life stuff.
This led me down a rabbit hole of reading about the vaccine race, in general, and I guess it just seems like we're farther away than I thought. That's probably on me for buying into some of the optimistic takes on the process, but still. Also, the fact that antibody response to the virus seems to fade after 2-3 months has led to some speculation that we may not actually be able to create a sterilizing vaccine for this thing. If it's, like, an annual booster like the flu shot, or whatever, that's cool, but if it's something where people would have to be getting shots every 3 months, that's not really that feasible/viable.
I dunno. I was really hoping something would be getting rolled out by January, and everything I read today makes it seem like, even if everything does go right with the candidates out there now, that's not likely.
yeah this "maybe only 3ish months immunity" thing is so fucking scary :/ blehhhhhhh
All antibodies gradually disappear, it's whether or not memory cells can respond to the virus again appropriately. Antibodies going away after 3 months doesn't mean immunity goes away too. We simply don't know how long immunity lasts.

I believe in that study they innoculated the monkeys with an extremely high amount of the virus in both the upper and lower respiratory tract. A vaccine would have to be insanely effective in order to be able to provide adeauate protection in the nasal passageways in order to protect against such high amounts of the virus in that location. In other words, we wouldn't be subjected to that amount of virus if we catch it as we're going about our daily lives
Also forgive my ignorance, but if it just causes a sinus infection in this scenario is that a big deal? We could easily go on with our lives if people aren’t stupid and get the vax

Nobody here ask me any favors for awhile.
Crap I am sorry.
Thanks. I don't feel too bad so far. I did stay away from her as soon as I first heard a lot of coughing but living with someone makes it a little difficult to stay safe. I think it will be fine.
The fiance's results came back negative today. Woo woo! Good birthday present for her tomorrow.
IDK why but this made me think of you holding your fiance's results until tomorrow so you could reveal them as a birthday present. Which then led me to the thought of people having "Covid reveal parties" similar to the ones they do for gender.
My very good friend started working for my all-time favorite Houston alt-rag recently. Please read his shit to keep up with *our* shit, as we're apparently the favored incubator of the world right now (fuck).

What a scummy GOP move. They knew this rally was an awful idea. Texas republicans will blame the the big city democrats for cancelling their rally.
All three of my younger brothers have now tested positive. All work at the beach and it's likely my one brother got it at work and spread it to the others. My mom is living with them- last week she tested negative at the same time/after the boys had tested positive. Really hoping she won't catch it from them. The boys are apparently asymptomatic.
I'd had a bad feeling last time I saw them and opened windows and reverted to wiping down with Lysol constantly after they left. I tested negative the week after they came but the news of the coworker being infected came two days after I saw them, so safe to say they were already infected then. At least there's that but worried for them/my parents.
GF's dermatology clinic just cancelled her appointment because her profession is listed as registered nurse and we're not real sure how to feel about it.
I mean, I guess dermatology isnt essential.... but can they refuse service because you are a nurse? She's definitely been in contact with the virus at work but always while wearing the proper PPE.

Private practice can refuse service to anyone. They might feel she's too high risk and since the appointment is with a dermatologist who deals specifically with skin they don't want to take that chance.

Florida COVID update: death count has doubled. Hospitalization count has multiplied by 1.5. Positivity rate has jumped up four percent to 18 percent...and that’s with 25k less tests performed than the day before due to a lack of testing supplies.

I mean, I guess they can because they did. But it just feels dirty though. She's in two masks, safety glasses, and gloves for 12 hours at a time 4-5 nights a week right now. She's probably got less chance of catching the virus than I do working a 9-5 in my cubicle with my dumb fabric mask on. I think it really both upset and embarrassed her. Maybe if you feel like you can't treat the people that are/will care for you...maybe you shouldn't be treating anyone at all?
Either way. We're going to let it rest and not go all Karen on the matter. But I think she's going to look for another dermatologist.

I didn't say or do I think it was right, FTR. And she should totally find another doctor, especially since they should have told her before she even came in, like when making the appointment.

And then they'll move it to Fort Worth or Lubbock or some place with a Republican mayor and council.
made a connection in my mind just now relating to masks, stores, and my personal experience.
some people around the internet are getting onto store employees for not doing a better job enforcing mask policies. i understand the criticism, but i also understand that lots of employees are exhausted by the confrontation and end up saying screw it, especially if they look at a certain maskless person and judge by their appearance that they will probably freak out on them.
several years ago i was a bank teller, and during my time working there the bank implemented a no hats/sunglasses policy, in order to allow cameras to get a clearer shot of people passing bad checks. most customers were polite about it, some of those a bit perturbed and being made to feel like a criminal but they complied. but that still left numerous customers who just lost their shit about it and piled abuse on to you.
so add that normal "these rules don't apply to me" asshole-ism with a bunch of culture war bullshit about masks, and i imagine it's a situation that would have completely decimated my will to enforce a policy if i was still in a customer-facing role.

we also have an excessive heat advisory for the next couple days (110+ degrees) - which stresses vulnerable populations (homeless, elderly).
some other stats:
New Cases 4221 (today) Cases 116,892 Deaths 2,082 Positivity rate (7-Day Avg) 27% ICU bed capacity 89% Inpatient bed capacity 88% COVID-19 patients currently hospitalized 4,308
its getting grim out here in the dessert ya'll.
our governor's response has been to restrict bars/restaurants to 50% capacity...starting tomorrow at 10PM. Masks are only mandated at the city level. Governor is pushing to open schools August 5th. Luckily we have the option (and ability) to put our daughter in a full-online program.
Home schooling is going to be HUGE next year, and maybe moving forward.
Which is a good move for health reasons, but also a tad concerning considering how many people don't have the skills or time to homeschool, and how many people aren't that educated themselves. I worry about how this is all going to impact the school-age generation.

Not if those on the right have their way. They are pushing HARD the idea that if schools don't open then it's all politics to try and make Trump look bad (and also lead the way for people voting by mail). You're seeing idiots in power saying "if you can go to home depot and wal mart then you can go to school". Trump is rage tweeting about how bad virtual learning is and many are parroting the idea that schools will be safe because kids are less at risk. It's insane.

I was talking with one of my old bosses about this a couple months ago. Everyone is talking about the economy and their health rn (which is still super important to worry about) but I have not heard a peep about what this will do to kids' mental health. School provides a tremendous opportunity for socialization and my generation is the most depressed of all living generations because we spend too much time on our phones instead of with each other (Alternatively, we are safer, drink less, do less drugs, and have less sex). I'm worried these kids will have it even worse because even having one friend over poses a health risk

Thankfully, a few Florida counties like Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, etc. have basically told the governor to go fuck himself and will have virtual options for the school year. Thankfully we've got local governments on our side.
