The last 2 pages are a great example of why this place is so dead in the off-season, I suppose. Anyway, I'll take CPK's side, or attempt to. I don't really want to get into the back and forth, but I think that the point that's trying to be made is that Paul's setlist has a number of songs that are widely considered to be among the best rock songs ever written, and are also extremely popular/well-known. They have sold lots of copies and have indisputable artistic value. It is rare for a band anywhere near as good as The Beatles to be popular, much less be one of the most popular bands (if not THE most popular band) of all time. The point is that seeing Paul McCartney is a treat, since bands like Radiohead potentially have a lot longer to tour, given that Paul is 69 years old. He is the only remaining Beatle of the 3 who wrote the majority of the music, and that is also something special.
The Beatles had an incredible amount of cultural influence, as well. To deny that they were one of the biggest driving forces of the 60's movement is just silly. Their songs capture that, as well, so seeing them is, in many ways, like witnessing a piece of history first-hand at a museum. I understand that many other bands have had a huge impact on music and culture, but the 60's were a major turning point in American society, and they were a part of that. To witness a song that represents something like that, whether it's something simple like one of the first songs that was 6 minutes long but got airplay on pop radio or something that examines the place of drugs in society, as played by the original artist is an experience that many other bands today cannot provide.
It's cool if you'd rather see another band play a 37 song setlist, but I think that Paul's has something special that many others do not. Sorry to rehash anything that's been said before.
Wait who are people trying to claim has a better, more consistent discog? I mean Stones peak>Beatles peak but c'mon no one can claim better and more consistent
Neither. I posted about the setlist that jetlag posted on the previous page and the rest is history.
Wait, I'm confused. Is it dead around here because we argue? Or do we argue because it is dead.
Clear this up for me please. (I didn't read the rest of your post ;D)
It's dead because we argue was the inference, I believe. You see, it's the airing of debate and difference that causes people to stop posting during the months of August - January, not the fact that the festival is a long, long time away and there isn't any significant news to discuss.
In short, we are all horrible people.
Yeah I agree but it is probably a little bit of everything. A lot of people probably use the board to get insider info before the fest. People start to gain more interest in the fest as it approaches. We argue cause it is dead and it is dead cause we argue. It is kind of a chicken and egg thing we got going.

FWIW, I saw Paul at Yankee Stadium and it was one of the 5 best shows I have ever been to.
I think what CPK was saying was that Paul has such a deep and widely loved catalog that when he steps up there and plays 37 songs, every one knows them. From middle school idiots to people my parent's age, he resonates with everyone. Bands like MMJ or an act like Prince isn't the same way (not how I feel personally, but it's my objective opinion).
For the record, Paul's 3+ hour set was awesome, but I would be just as pumped for a 3+ hour MMJ set or something like that.
I hope Paul is at Roo in 2012 because I'm skipping Roo in 2012. I know a lot of people love him so I think he should be there but I can't stand him so I'd rather he was there when I wasn't. I would feel horrible if I had to miss Prince or The Who or The Rolling Stones but I'd be very happy to miss Paul. I just can't stand his voice and I don't like his music. Again, I hope he is at Bonnaroo because he is so popular and a lot of people want him there. I think he would put on a great headlining performance but I don't want to be there.
The problem is, you're making opinion based statements like "they reshaped popular music as we know it," and "Paul McCartney might have the best catalog of music" and acting as if they're factual in nature.
I will grant you the 'best catalogue' thing is completely subjective and dependent on personal tastes. But the fact that The Beatles really did help reshape popular music is simply inarguable. With the exception of the Yellow Submarine soundtrack, every album they released from Rubber Soul through Abbey Road was nothing short of a masterpiece (....I think ), and did help to reshape the 'rules' of pop music at the time. The Beatles were pioneers in changing the course of popular music from the chord-based rockabilly of the 1950s to the more experimental psychedelia of the late 1960s. They weren't the only ones to usher in that transition, for sure - but they were the first to break that new ground, and because they were trailblazers into so many new sounds and genres, they were also the most influential band in the history of recorded music. Show me a song from before "A Day in the Life" that sounds anything like "A Day in the Life". And how many bands were incorporating traditional Indian instruments into Western pop songs before Rubber Soul? Before then, pop music was almost always some combination of vocals/guitar/bass/drums, sometimes with a piano thrown in for good measure. The Beatles played an enormous role in changing all that, and in leading the shift from simple 2-3 minute doo wop numbers into longer, more rhythmically and thematically complex material that was meant to be heard in the context of a full album.
Whether you like them or not, you've really got your head in the sand on this one by denying that The Beatles played an enormous role in reshaping popular music as we knew it. Their influence and impact is undeniable, and refusing to admit as much is really making me look twice at some of your other arguments.
Where did I refuse to admit their influence or impact? All I was saying is that to state one's opinions as fact without providing some sort of logic/evidence to back it up is poor reasoning.
I was referring mostly to the quote I posted above, where you said that (and I'm paraphrasing slightly here) statements like "The Beatles helped reshape popular music as we knew it" were strictly opinion-based and not factual in nature. It's pretty much universally recognized that The Beatles played a very significant role in shaping the course of music over the past half-century.
It's not so much what was being said that bothered me, or that I even disagreed with, it's how it was being used.
I can agree with that to an extent, and will admit CPK might not have constructed the strongest arguments to support his point, even though I mostly agree with what he's saying.
If it helps, I like the Beatles just fine. I think some of their stuff is phenomenal, and some is merely okay. I recognize their place in the rock and roll canon, though I refuse to arbitrarily grant them best band ever status simply because everyone says that's how it should be.
Fair enough. So, just out of curiosity - barring any sort of major reunion or anything, who would be your top 10 potential Saturday night headliners? (JHo, this question goes for you too).

Oooh, you're embarking upon dangerous waters here Jack My personal Bonnaroo wishlist stems mostly from acts I've never seen. I make no basis on whether or not they would "fit" at Bonnaroo or whether or not they've played before.
I can send you a list via PM if you really want to know, because right now, I'm not in the mood to deal with everyone telling me how wrong I am
Also, McCartney would be my top wish for Roo. He's not the artist I want to see most in the world, and I don't even love The Beatles, but the chance to see him playing those songs, and to get it for way cheaper than otherwise possible, would be great. I know I'll never get to see him if it's not at a festival. I hope he gets booked in the next few years.

Ok, so there are some bands I don't like. Know what I don't go on threads or sites about them. Roo is a melting pot, it's not all what any one person likes but something for most people. I'll tell you this as well if Paul is on the bill, expect an early sell out and if you want stay home.

You're really jumping the gun on interpreting insider's vague hints, CPK. Not that Paul McCartney isn't my #1 most wanted headliner, but at this point I still really doubt it.
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.

I'm not saying it is a done deal but from what insider has posted last night and this morning and the fact Macca has a new album out in Feb. I think it is a pretty good educated guess.
