I need help this month. I don't like Kanye or AC. Diiv is good but not aotm good. I was ready to vote for Post Pop Depression, but I just found out that comes out next month. What should I listen to?
Also, I look forward to you all hearing Oranssi Pazuzu's "Värähtelijä" and realizing how silly you were in thinking that Kanye's half-baked bullshit could even possibly be the album of the month. This thing will blow your fucking minds. Talking to you, , and you Dave Maynar, and you @rothric.
I'll get on it as nothing else is really grabbing my attention this month.
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.
Pinegrove or Kanye is going to be the toughest choice for AOTM I've had to make in the two years of doing this
That Diiv record is cool too
I know you know that the Kanye record is supremely overrated. I was actually waiting for you to pop up so we could actually agree on something for once.
I think it's definitely his worst album. First half is really great. (So great I think it's worthy of AOTM consideration) Second half is okay at best. 30 Hours and Waves are hot garbage tho
My only problem with Kanye's album is that I kind of agree with Bob Ezrin... it's lacking substance like albums from Kendrick and other great rap albums (even Yeezus and MBDTF). The entire album is pretty much about himself (which is fine, but... it's hard to say it has much depth).
At the same time, it's extremely fun and it's pretty much all I want to listen to this month aside from Animal Collective's. It's hard to criticize such an entertaining album... but if I were to critique it, it would be lack of substance.

Wait, do the Animal Collective lyrics have "substance"? FOH with white people demanding substance from a rap album. The "substance" of TPAB is vastly overrated.
TLOP has as much substance as MBDTF. I think there's way to much emphasis specifically on fucking, but all Kanye albums are "about himself."

Animal Collective goes in and out in respect to substance, imo. Some of their songs are also "fun" songs... some of their lyrics can be vague at times and requires the listener to draw their own conclusion as to what the meaning behind the songs are, but they do have songs that lack substance at times.
If you are going to self-proclaim your album as the GREATEST ALBUM OF ALL TIME, then I think it's only fair game for people to call him out on lack of substance. MBDTF has much better lyrics than TLOP. I would even consider MBDTF one of the greatest albums of all time. I would never say that about TLOP... but it is a great album that's fun to listen to.

Kendrick's album tried so hard to have substance it fell out the other side and became less enjoyable. There are only about 6 tracks from TPAB that I still play and they're probably the ones with the least "substance."
Substance is rapping about black children killed by cops because of the color of their skin... and how it hasn't changed since the riots in LA.
Substance is rapping about black men being in prison for possessing pot while white men like Bill Maher just lit up a joint on HBO live on air a week ago. (Bill Maher fan here)
Substance is telling young people "18 years, 18 years... she got one of your kids, got you for 18 years"
Substance is rapping "here come some conservative Baptists... claiming I'm overreacting like them black kids in Chiraq..."
It's not rapping "I bet me and Ray J would be friends. If we ain't love the same b----. Yeah, he might have hit it first. Only problem is I'm rich"
That's not to say a fun album is bad... it just lacks any social message which I think THE GREATEST ALBUM OF ALL TIME... *might* need to have.

Please do go on. What are the other important things black people should be rapping about, in your opinion.

It depends upon what they want out of their music... some rappers just want to have a good time, which was Kanye's goal for his new album.
Some rappers want to rap about social issues and the world... similar to Lupe Fiasco and Kendrick Lamar.
That's not to knock Kanye... his album is fun... it's just not THE GREATEST ALBUM OF ALL TIME.

But Bill Maher smoked a joint with a black rapper? I get what you're saying but I think in that case it might just be a class issue rather than a race issue.
Yeah, Kanye overstated things by calling TLOP "The Greatest Album of All Life" but that's kinda what he does. Wouldn't take it too personal.

I'm sorry but this is bullshit. So, the only way a black rapper can have substance is to talk about racial injustice?
Rapping about relationships, faith, mental instability, and family isn't substance for a black rapper?

Does he really rap about that stuff on his new album, though? He rapped more on faith on Yeezus... and his collaborators on the new album spoke more on faith than he did.
I would consider all of those things substance but I don't really see much of those things in his new album.
