There is typically a headliner I sleep through to prepare for late night, and I'm fine with that b/c it works out well. This year, it will be U2. While I don't like U2, I think they're a step up from "The Boss." (Yuck) My biggest issue with them being on the bill is that they'll probably be the most costly (in terms of how much they're being paid) band on the lineup, and I just hate that b/c of them being on lineup, it would pretty much negate any chance of Radiohead or Price headlining, both of which I would MUCH RATHER see over U2. So what, we'll have U2, Panic, and Arcade Fire? If they're spending all this money on U2, just worried other 2 headlining acts might be mediocre.

Agreed! I took a nice 3 hour nap during Springsteen I think though if U2 play I will probably see them, because I know they put on a great show.
I wish I could see U2 as a fun show. Could somebody give me some songs to convince me of their validity as a band? All I can think of off the top of my head is garbage. Beautiful Day is one of the most repulsive songs I can think of. With or Without you is a close second. Bloody Sunday is nothing to write home about. Has U2 ever done anything worth listening to? I have 2,000 songs on my Iphone. None are by U2.
People have probably said this before.
You have to see it live.
Believe me, I am NOT a U2 fan. Like you, there is no U2 on my ipod or in my music collection.
Live, they are amazing. Seriously - that played out U2 song you can't bear to hear one more time on the radio - somehow, it's great. They would absolutely rock the What Stage, no question.

Totally agree, although I do consider myself a fan of their music up through Achtung Baby. One of my best friends went to see RATM open for them on the Pop tour (purely to see Rage) and when he came back, he couldn't even remember anything about the Rage set. Said that U2 was unbelievable & that I should have went.
I finally got the chance to see them last year on the 360 Tour in Atlanta & it absolutely blew me away. There are VERY few bands that I would put on par with the overall experience of that show, and trust me, I've seen just about all of 'em.
There is a reason that they have essentially been the biggest band in the WORLD for the past 20+ years. If you all want to pay your $250 and take a nap during this set (assuming it happens), don't let me stop you. I'm just sharing my experience & it's definitely in my top 5 shows of all time.
I don't know how troo this is, but I googled U2 Bonnaroo and I found this post that someone responded with to a newspaper article:
"Threre's one problem with this rumor. U2 are locked into an exclusive agreement with Live Nation to promote their concert performances until 2020. They can play glastonbury because Live Nation co-owns the festival.
Bonnaroo is owned by AC Entertainment, thus making it a business impossibility for them to play there"
Anyone have some insight to the validity of this contractual agreement?
Not sure if anybody responded besides the great news guy. But, like anything that involves money, there can be a way around that. The thing is I think U2 released those tour dates because of a contract with Live Nation that Bonnaroo probably has to respect. Those tour dates are a sign that U2 is playing. Why?
Because, Bonnaroo is in the music business and if they want fans in the seat by booking U2, then they'll have to respect their contracts. Live Nation probably has a clause that they can get a percentage of sales tickets, nothing to break Bonnaroo though. If U2 wasn't playing, then those tour dates would be filled like last year (although they had Friday off, but everybody knew it wasn't going to happen). U2 does benefit from Bonnaroo, Bonnaroo benefits from U2. And that Nashville show is a sham, it will happen but it's just secrecy clause type deal that Bonnaroo probably established in their contract with Live Nation and U2.
Edit: Meant U2 does not benefit from Bonnaroo, but Bonnaroo does benefit from U2.

amazed at how much hate the springsteen show got. could be in my top 5 ever, and definitely one of the best, if not the best, headliners i've ever seen at roo, though i've only been in 05, 07, 09 and 10. i wasn't even familiar with a lot of the songs they played, like outlaw pete, which was probably my favorite of the set.
as for u2, i say bring em on, if you can't get mccartney. i would say waters but he's already booked. anyone with a brain already knows u2 is one of the hottest live acts of all time, which is why bonnaroo will get them. i like some songs from the joshua tree and achtung, but that's it. if you don't like em, don't go to their show and forget about it. it's that simple.

I can't imagine myself driving 15 hours and spending over $1000 for the weekend and than sleeping through the Saturday headliner, I don't care who is playing.

You really should check out the earlier output. Boy, October, War, The Unforgettable Fire, and Rattle & Hum. Those 5 records (along with the 2 you mentioned) are some of the finest moments of recordings ever. They lost me at Zooropa and even then I'd listen to the new albums once. But those first 7 records are a feat that launched them into the stratosphere of superstars.
My wife hates U2 but decided to join me for the Chicago show last year. I looked over at here midway through the show and she was in tears. She said she still hates them but agreed that they are amazing live
My gf is sort of part of that scene - but there are lots and lots and lots of people - from all over the world, that go on tour with the band. They are the people waiting ALL day to get front row. On the DVD's, she can identify a bunch of people in the front rows - hell, she even knows one of the people Bono pulled on stage.
That said, those fans aren't slinging veggie burritos and heady mahldog, they are typically affluent people with a lot of time on their hands
So U2 has a "scene", they are politically active (to say the least), and can definitely put on a great live show. Exactly how do they not fit into Bonnaroo?

Reguardless what Bono has become.
Sooooo on-the-money here, Garageland. I've convinced myself that if we can't get Daft Punk or Radiohead, U2 will be a blast. Sooo many great songs in their catalog that could be pretty epic on Saturday night at the farm. I'd catch all of U2's set (depending on LNs) and be excited to do so.
Also, do people really dislike The Boss? How is that even possible? He made some of the most universally likable music ever in the late 70s and early 80s.

Yes, you will go see them because I will make you ;D
As idio said, even if you're not a U2 fan, they put on a fantastic show. If you're a fan of live music (which I hope people that go to Bonnaroo are), you will most likely enjoy their show.
Fact: I personally do not enjoy Phish's music (GASP!). However, I can concede that they put on a great show. It's the same thing with U2. Their music may not be your thing, but the energy they have on stage is matched by few other bands that I've seen live.
I'd be satisfied with a U2 booking, like most others here, I like a lot of their old stuff and would only be disappointed because of who we *didn't* get. But after last year, I'll take U2 in a heartbeat.
Emoney serves more of a purpose than any of you, especially Nate, whose incessant, garbled ramblings are so mindless and pointless that I get depressed just seeing them.
add me to the "meh" list for springsteen. ive seen him a few times now - just not for me.
too much schlocky americana for me to get into. and i dont mean that in a negative way, that's just how i would describe it. and i get how lots of people are into him - it's just not for me. like any prolific artist, there are a few songs i like - but i basically strongly dislike all of his hits.
granted, i do have fond memories of sitting on the vip mound watching him thinking - "is bonnaroo really singing 'santa claus is coming to town'?" very surreal.

Also, I hate Springsteen.
^^agree with everything, though I think "hate" is too strong a word for Springsteen. I just camped out for the NIN concert and enjoyed the audio portion of the show from the Which stage. The sound and music were professional though to say the least.
If U2 is in fact the big headliner, I'll be strollin' through for sure. It'll be a cool show to listen to from camp as well. They aren't my favorite, but to be able to check off that I've seen U2 would be great.
I guess, it just seems really cheesy and bland to me, I feel the same way about KISS, sorry if that offends any KISS/Boss fans. I probably wouldn't have passed the meh/dislike/hate threshold if it wasn't for the constant adoration he gets that I don't agree with.
It's kinda like how I like an Animal Collective LP or two, but the constant circle jerking over them is just obnoxious.
I wouldn't bitch about Springsteen being on the line-up though since I recognize he's a worldwide icon and according to a lot of people, very influential. In fact, 09 was probably the best for my tastes a Roo line-up has ever gotten.

How much have any of us given to a cause that could even match what he is tring to do for others...kinda the spirt of the Roo eh? He doesn't have to do a damn thing, but he does.
The man walks his own path true, but he does try to to leave things better.
