I have no answer in mind, but I have my own personal interpretation of the clue...
A trip to space: The rise to the top, the journey from being an unknown band to becomming known worldwide. In otherwords, they were in the process of making themselves known.
Thwarted by a speckled lad's demise: A band member was holding them back either from druqs, illness, or something else. This was preventing them from doing what was neccesary to succeed. Someone suggested that speckled could refer to freckles or another identifying feature.
Otherwise a watershed moment: Due to the whatever problem that particular band member was having they had to remove him from the band. Doing so allowed them to move forward, become known, and perhaps the replacement is what defines the way people know them today.

I've never heard of them, but they were talking about them in one of the rumor threads. But the band "moon taxi" sounds like a trip to space, and sounds like it has potential. I just don't know enough about them to tie them to the clue. Anybody know enough about em?
I know this doesn't necessarily belong here as I cannot tie it to the clue but Peter Frampton has a new album and is touring Europe thru March...we can dream
Being the die hard Zeppelin fan I am, I can't help but tie them into this clue.
Trip to space was their rise to stardom, thwarted by a speckled lad demise was the end of tour of '77 being canceled due to the death of Robert Plants son and a watershed moment otherwise because even without the death of his son, it ended up being their last real tour due to Bonham's death.
Seems to me like Gregg Allman is the winning theory. It's one of the most logical (if you follow the Apollo theory, which i still don't buy, Apollo Sunshine can work), it doesnt stretch too far away from the clue, and it's a very standard act to expect at roo.
I dont know, but for some reason this one makes the most sense to me. although i am reluctant to think that Neil Young would be the very first clue, this logic just works for me.
with the separation of "space" to SP/ACE (Superfly/ A.C.E.), the speckled bit, and also with out thinking in terms of bonnaroo, the passing of a good friend who you knew for 40 years, and lived on your property would most definitely be a watershed moment (reason to cry) .
I think its Neil.
but who knows
Rust Never Sleeps. "Out of the blue and into the black," could describe travel out of the atmosphere into space. Cobain quoted the song in his suicide letter/letter of demise. Watershed, rusty roofs shed water.

Jorma Kaukonen
In a career that has already spanned a half-century, Jorma Kaukonen has been the leading practitioner and teacher of fingerstyle guitar, one of the most highly respected interpreters of American roots music, blues, and Americana, and at the forefront of popular rock-and-roll. He was a founding member of two legendary bands, The Jefferson Airplane and the still-touring Hot Tuna, a Grammy nominee, a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the most in-demand instructor in the galaxy of stars who teach at the Fur Peace Ranch Guitar Camp that he and his wife operate in picturesque Southeastern Ohio.
But performance and recording are only part of the story. Jorma and his wife Vanessa Lillian have operated one of the worlds most unique center’s for the study of guitar and other instruments. Jorma Kaukonen’s Fur Peace Ranch Guitar Camp is located on 125 acres of fields, woods, hills, and streams in the Appalachian foothills of Southeastern Ohio. Since it opened in 1998, thousands of musicians whose skills range from basic to highly accomplished gather for weekends of master instruction offered by Jorma and other instructors who are leaders in their musical fields.
i know i'm a little late to the game, but, i noticed some people talking about the clues link to the apollo 13 mission. i looked at the insignia for the apollo 13 mission, it had running horses on it. any connection maybe to band of horses? just a random thought.

Bowie makes sense. If you look at the clue in terms of discography all of Bowie's major tom stuff came out in 1969 to accompany the moon landing. About three years later, Bowie turned to Ziggy Stardust, The rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust to be exact (which constitutes a "demise"), abandoning his previous "space mission". This was a huge turning point in Bowie's career ("watershed moment") considering this is when the "cult of Bowie" really started. Boom.
