Alright, I read through everything. I did it REALLY quickly so I'll have to give it a much more thorough read-through when I have more time to devote, but for now...
The clue is pretty cohesive and clearly worded, so I don't think we want to get too far away from it. Unless Katie is SUPER good at this right off the bat or has a team of people working on it for her, I don't think she could have taken seven thousand steps from something and ended up with something so logically worded, y'know? Of course, it's possible that only part of it is actually important and the rest is just fluff. But I'm inclined to say we need to try to avoid seriously stretchy answers.
The clue is basically telling a story, so I feel like it's all one part, in a way. Could be referring to song lyrics or album art like was mentioned early on, or it could be an actual event like all the Apollo 13 and similar theories.
It's occurred to me that if you assume the clue should be read fairly straightforwardly, there are two main ways "a watershed moment otherwise" could be interpreted. Either the trip to space would have been a watershed moment if it hadn't been thwarted by the speckled lad, or it's sort of a part of some larger thing and the aspects of that thing that weren't thwarted were a watershed moment. I initially interpreted it as the former, fwiw.
I'm definitely inclined to interpret the speckled lad in a mostly literal way - a freckled boy. Lad could imply a British angle (or Irish or w/e), and I'm pretty sure "speckled" as a synonym for freckled is also a more British thing, so between the two words I think it's fairly likely that we want our speckled lad to be someone British.
hmm with all this talk of space programs and cold war and missles this couldnt have anything to do with call of duty could it? i know eminem had a song in the commercial but where there any other artists associated with this game?.....personally, i dont think this is right, but just trying to maybe give people something to go with if they are stuck. im horrible at figureing out clues.
I looked at the artists that I got from the Apollo 13 theory and I have narrowed it down some.
Apollo Sunshine Apollo 440 Apollo Brown
And I'm going to throw this out there. The lingo in the clue ( lad and watershed ) seemed to be from the UK. Apollo 440 is the only of the three to be from the UK.
I feel like ruling Apollo Brown out is easy enough, since I don't think a single one of us has ever heard of such a band. My crack research team says Apollo 440 is feasible, but I dunno. I've never heard of them before today.
Your probably right about taking out Apollo Brown, he's an underground rapper btw.
And to be fair, I haven't heard of a whole lot of bands that have played at roo, so just because you haven't heard of them doesn't mean they aren't the right answer.

the clue sounds a lot like the old ones. so i think they are probably coming from the same place. just a different person delivering them.

ok the goddess has spoken. where do we go from here..for now That's all I've got for right now I think...
No sweat! It's prob nothing, just a lot of coincidence. I figured I would chime in and try to help people think out of the box a bit. Honestly, the clues usually lead to smaller bands than Rod!

Yeah, I'm wondering about the genesis of our clues too. I had been assuming djjd was writing the clues himself, but you're right that this one doesn't sound too dissimilar, so now I'm not sure. I feel like this one's more straightforward than a lot of djjd's, but obviously one clue isn't really enough to go on.
Does anyone remember way back in '08 when a couple of the initial clues were read by a different voice? If I remember correctly people thought it sounded like a computerized voice, but I'm not too confident in my memory and I never heard it myself. But that could imply that there was someone else involved even way back then. And of course there was operator5011. For all we know Katie IS operator5011, but I kinda doubt she would have created a new persona if that was the case.
I don't post on here often, and I'm just throwing this out here. Speckled could be like cheese possibly? And the whole watershed thing could be an incident? String Cheese Incident?
Also, I found that their first album was called Born on the Wrong Planet, so maybe that could be the trip to space part.
I don't know much about them, but I do like their music, but that's not necessarily why I thought of them.
All I can think about is Armageddon, even though it's ridiculous. It kinda feel like it could fit except that Bruce Willis's demise didn't really thwart anything. Although he is "speckled" (when the screen goes fuzzy at the end) and it's definitely a watershed moment...because of all the weeping and goins ons. It's totally Aerosmith. haha!

Wasn't Dark Side of the Moon released when Syd was finely let go of because of his Mental Illness?
yes syd was not around for darkside.
Syd was officially removed from the band on April 6, 1968, but he showed up at several gigs afterward confused as to what was happening. His last contributions to the band were on the album Saucerful of Secrets which was released June 29, 1968. Dark Side of the Moon was released March 10, 1973.

I can't help thinking that we're not looking for an actual trip to space, here. I do think we want something straightforward, but that feels a bit TOO literal. Especially considering y'all are using the literal interpretation to get to some awfully big wishful-thinking names. If it is a simple, literal thing, it's probably not going to be Muse, Arcade Fire, Bowie, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, any of that.
I think some of you may be misinterpreting the clue. The second part of the clue is "A watershed moment otherwise." This means the watershed moment didn't occur because it was thwarted. So we are looking for a "trip to space" that didn't happen because of the "speckled lad's demise." Just thought I would add my 2¢.

well to be fair.. we likely know more references about bands we like. i know more album covers and movie tunes of bands i like than bands i dont like as much. i think we can all contribute something here. i really hope we can avoid an elitist attitude and enjoy this eh?

I keep thinking the trip to space = rise to the top

that's the precise logic i'm trying to use with Muse. they wanted to play in space, and because of circumstances the way they are-- their plan was/is thwarted. Otherwise, had the plan still been good-- it would definitely be a watershed moment.

It can also mean that it was a watershed moment regardless of what happened
