Unfortunately, he'll be fine since he'll have nearly a week to rest his throat. Maybe he'll continue to slug whiskey, yell like a madman, and they'll get someone, anyone to replace them.
This could be something serious, like a perforated esophagus or similar sex injury. It'll take more than a week to heal the bruising and tearing.

Either way... I'll be wandering/maybe watching some robot chicken during KoL... so this doesnt affect me at all. Although I do live in Wilkes-Barre, and heard lots of kids whining about their KoL show being cancelled and got to rub it in their face that I'm seeing them on the farm.... even though I'm not.
I think it's a possibility they cancel, but I think he'll be fine.
Even if they stay, I would imagine Superfly is already looking into a replacement. There is no way that they just are optimistic and expect him to recover. If he can't sing that morning, then they're really screwed - they're at least looking for who is available to come in. If they are replaced, I wouldn't expect someone HUGE because it would be a waste of money (all tickets have already been sold, for the the most part).
I'd say the options on the table are:
(1) Move Stevie Wonder to Friday and Jay-Z the Saturday spot (although this would be weak considering that we'd be losing a Top 5 act for literally nothing)
(2) DMB headlines Friday & Sunday
(3) Widespread Panic - the typical festival saver
(4) My Morning Jacket - probably the fan favorite, wouldn't cost as much as a typical headliner, probably already close to AC reps
(5) Neil Young - already been in talks with AC, they're doing his tour
Its not so much that i dont want KoL at Bonnaroo, but the fact that they are HEADLINERS. seriously. Look at the HLs that Sasquatch and Lolla got... I mean the touring scene is pretty lean this summer, but still. KoL. wow. how about no.
When I think of KoL, I immediately jump to that scene at the end of School of Rock where Joan Cusack is playing the principal and she's talking to one of the douchebags in the band that ends up winning... and hes stroking his bare chest under his ridiculous leather vest. THAT is what KoL is to me. Shirtless dudes in leather vests who think they're sex incarnate.

If they don't already have one planned then I think the last thing we would get is a superjam. They like to practice before those types of things.
WSP just headlined Waka the other night so they're probably home. Don't see them getting out.
Neil Young since he's on tour could work but he was just in Nashville I doubt they would turn around.
MMJ just finished their tour. Doubt they hope right back out.
Primus, eh I don't know. This might be the best bet. They're about to go on tour. Claypool will already be there. I'm sure they've practiced.
It will be very interested to see what happens if Followill can't come through. But you've got to think, with his/their ego and this being their hometown festival and them working their way to headliner spot that he'll go on no matter what.

All of this is true. Kings of Leon is by far not the worst band in the entire world, but the fact that they are ABOVE stevie wonder in terms of headlining is just disgusting.
Also, I'm sure alot of people saw this, but to me, KoL is a group of kids who let their fame go wayyyyy to their head. they just released an extremely overpriced clothing line. This article also references another article in which they describe their new album as a mix between Radiohead, Thin Lizzy and The Band... can't get much more annoyingly pretentious than that.
