The only ones I thought sucked were the ones I knew were going to suck. I pray I'm never again sitting under a tree, feeling the roo vibe full force and have to hear stacy's mom coming from not too far off.
The Police upset me because they sucked and caused me not to have a good seat for the Lips. I cannot believe what people have paid to see them alone.
I agree about Ben Harper although I'm not sure who they could have put in his spot. Ralph Stanley, maybe ;D? JK, I loved Ralph.
Also, did anyone hear Billy Joels daughter? yikes...

Yeah, I'm sure that 3 minutes just totally ruined the festival.

I didn't say it ruined the festival, its just one of those horrible jingle songs with no musical quality that seem to be the opposite of what bonnaroo is about.

For me it was the "big ones." Not impressed by the Police. Liked, but didn't love Tool. And was so far back for the super jam that I heard mostly the disco. The White Stripes didn't floor me either, but again, way too far back.

the police were pretty crap, I'd agree. i saw them again in Fenway park... it wasn't any better. People near me said it was one of the best shows they had ever seen...so they either never go to concerts or got something out of the performance i missed.

I thin when you pay that uch for a (reunion) show, it's not too hard to convince yourself its "the best show I've ever seen." But at Bonnaroo, where you have the chance to see them along side so many other concerts, It becomes apparent they didn't do anything remotly special beyond showing up. I'm not saying their set "sucked," but there was so much more there worth talking about that the Police just paled in comparison.

I have to say (please don't smite me) The Nightwatchman sucked for me - not what I expected - really wish I had gone to Kings of Leon instead
I concur. I cant deal with Tom Morello unless hes shredding his asss off on an electric. It may not have sucked but it really didnt do it for me. Other than that, I didnt see one shittty set really.

the police
not to be harsh but that was awful. i mean really really bad. i was kinda excited for them but that was bad. sting was way off. i would have preferred an instrumental set. and i didnt get into tool at all either. but i wont say they were bad. it didnt sound like a poor performance or anything its just not for me. i stayed for an hour and then got an awesome spot for string cheese. was it just me or was the mainstage quiet as hell for the police and tool. it was so much louder for widespread. people at our camp couldnt hear tool. and i went back to camp in the middle of the police and couldnt hear them either. but on sunday widespread was so loud that we could feel it. i didnt go to nightwatchman but i also heard many bad reviews about that show too. overall it was the weakest roo ive been to but i dont care because rod and gab, string cheese, mule, and widspread were so insanley great. i really only go for late night shows anyhow and i got a great show everynight.
I agree with you! I like Police, and it's nice to say that I've been to a Police show, but I'm not a really big fan.. I hear their music all the time in the office on the soft rock station, and that's good enough for me. Plus, we were waaaaaaaaaay in the back, and I just wasn't feeling the Police, although I think they're very talented musicians..

Ok, here I go digging up this thread again....
But for those of you who have never seen Xavier Rudd live previously, especially at a smaller venue, most def. would agree that he just wasn't as connected as normal. I've seen him now several times and Bonnaroo just wasn't on the same level....
I'm going to guess thats because I've seen him at shows where his fan base is par none. I think a lot of people who were at his show at the Roo left as fans but a lot didn't know his stuff before.
You should hear some of his jams when he's really let go! AMAZING! I'm not into substance abuse and I feel soooo high after I leave his shows it's CRAZY....

To me if you've seen one lips show you've seen em all. Only so many gimmicks. The worst show for me was the Roots. Black Thought only flowed a few times. Too many covers, not enough original material. Should have gone to Manu Chao. Regrets regrets.

Hey! Another person from Dead Moines! Karma to my fellow Io-way-an.

You're pretty insane. Regardless of how many times BT spit (and I counted more than a few times - Game Theory, Star, Love of My Life, the Next Movement, Don't Feel Right, Mellow My Man, plus all the freestyles/remixes during Hip Hop 101), that show was insane. The Roots aren't a rap group - they're a band. Every member is just as crucial, whether it's a Hub solo, ?uest, Kirk and Tuba Gooding doing Masters of War, or whatever, that's a Roots show.
I mean, I guess I could just chalk you up as not being a Roots fan, but there's no way that show was the worst of anything.
I am actually a roots fan. I suppose I just did not feel the show was representative of their albums enough. If I had gone into the show expecting what they performed I would have enjoyed it more perhaps.
I can't take it anymore I have to comment on this thread. I don't understand where everyone is coming from about these sets. The beauty of the roo is you can always move on and find something else if the band on the stage is not your cup of tea. I have been to 5 roo's and I can honestly say I have never seen anything that "sucked". Bonnaroo is about discovering new bands and seeing something you would never dream about buying a ticket for. I think everyone knew what they were getting into when the went to the big stage to see The Police. I was fairly close and I failed to see anyone having a bad time. They are what they are. They were pioneers in the new wave movement, cutting edge in the 70's. As for the Roots and the White Stripes I can not believe anyone could have seen these shows and not enjoyed something about them. Chill out everyone and reflect on those bands that you will never forget. Someday when you are old and gray you will look back on the Roo with great admiration and you will treasure those memories.
interesting perspective - however i think everyone agrees this is pretty subjective. i mean, what sucked for one person might have been the greatest set for others. i wouldnt enjoy a cannibal corpse concert, but some people would think it was the greatest thing. Same show, different opinions, different people.
Annuals was amazing, but they had sound problems. Kenny, Adam and Anna switch microphones often and the sound guy just couldn't get it together. I've seen billions of bands live, and Annuals is my favorite to see (possible exceptions for Tool and He Is Legend), especially in a club setting (Bonnaroo was my 16th/17th time seeing them). I hope they get many more chances to play Bonnaroo.
I was really disappointed with Cold War Kids, they didn't sound anything like their live EP. Nightwatchman was... meh. I love Tom Morello, and I love that his music has such a strong message... but musically, it wasn't great.
i think the only really boring set i saw this year was The Black Angels...it wasn't horrible i just couldn't get into it. other than that everything else was pretty awesome.
i'm probably going to step on some toes with this one, but me and my group all agree that shadow's set sucked. he seemed like he was trippin WAY to hard to be on stage and was more content to talk about how down he was for music than to actually play any. perhaps part of it had to do with the fact that tribe was so good and we left good spots to go see shadow and just felt a little let down.
Umm....The Police. I only watched one song, but they sounded awful, and I was actually looking forward to them. I took a breather and waited for The Flaming Lips (which was easily my favorite show of the weekend)
Kings of Leon were definitely underwhelming. John Butler Trio and North Mississippi All-Stars werent anything special either.
Aside from those...I thought everyone that I saw put on really good shows.

i have to say, agreeing with many others, that the police were completely underwhelming...my group kept looking around at each other once they started, as if to say "is this really IT?" we left after no more than 30 minutes...other than that i was pretty satisfied...
i guess i can see how tool is not some peoples cup of tea...i had never listened to one of their albums through and through before bonnaroo...but i thought their set was mindblowing and i am now a huge fan...the white stripes were one of my favorite shows of the weekend...they absolutely kicked ass, ben harper was loving it, and again was one of my favorite shows.
too bad for the guy who missed manu chao for the roots...not to say i dont like the roots--i totally do...but i have seen them before, and manu chao was my favorite concert all weekend...great stuff

Where were you for John Butler? I was up beyond the barrier at the front of the what stage and JBT was one of my favorite sets all weekend

I was just behind the barrier for the first half or so, then I retreated to the left mist tent. They really didn't sound BAD per se, there just wasnt as much energy as I expected from the band.
