I actually wasn't too far back... I'd say maybe 200 yards or so? I mean, yeah not right next to the stage by any means but for the Which Stage and not a tent I thought I was relatively close.
we were way back for flaming lips and the sound sucked. seems like there was an awesome show going on, but we couldn't tell from where we were. maybe that's what happened to you with damien.
yeah, i was really bummed about not getting a good spot. i had met up with my friend lucy that night too so i wasnt exactly on top of things and i kept telling my friends we needed to go get a good spot for the flaming lisp and they kept me at the art of such n such which was absolutely insane but still, i wish we had left earlier for the flisp because we were stuck way back next to the vip seats. galactic was great though.
Thirded here! Their set was tied with franti and spearhead for the biggest surprise for me, and both were for different reasons. I cant wait to see them at the end of the month at Sloss furnaces.
I'll be the fourther! Actually, I must admit I was a big fan of the White Stripes around the time of White Blood Cells and De Stijl, but kind of lost interest over the years. I went into it expecting to enjoy it but I didn't think it'd be that great, then they just proceeded to melt my freakin' face off...This show reminded me of why I love them. How can two people rock that hard?!?!?
Went in to the White Stripes set as a casual fan. I'd really only heard a few of the bigger songs, but I'd definitely call myself a fan after seeing their performence.
I think the Kings of Leon just need to rework their setlist and they'll be much better off... They have songs that could potentially get the entire What Stage rockin, they just didn't play most of them.
Completely agreed here. I saw them four times on this most recent tour, all with virtually the same setlist we saw at Roo. They are definitely my favorite modern band, and the new stuff sounded great on the big stage, but they just need to learn to switch up setlists throughout the tour and for different environments (I mean, closing with Trani for three years? It's getting a little old to see the mic-smashing bit, IMO.) Be a little more spontaneous. Play what you're feeling that night instead of the same thing night in and night out. Maybe they would have a little more energy during their sets too.

sixthed? I felt absolutely horrible Sunday, yet once the White Stripes started playing I was rocking out the entire set. Athough, I ldo ove the White Stripes, they are one of my favorite bands. Still though, they made me completely forget about being sick.
I don't know what shows you guys were at but I thought the Annuals was amazing. I was right up front so that might have something to do with it. The lead singers mic was not turned up, and that was annoying.
That tends to happen when you're up front; you're getting the guitars from the stage amps and drums direct, but the vocals are coming from the PA speakers which are pointing away from you. I love being up front and center for atmosphere, but for sound quality I aim for just in front of the soundboard.

I'll also say Annuals. Their album is great, but their set made me realize how much of a studio-oriented sound they have-- it just doesn't translate well to a live setting, despite all the energy they give. I'd also mention Aesop Rock as a set that lacked a lot of what it seemed the artist could deliver.
But that's grading on a curve, to call that the worst show I saw. Like LIGuy, I think all the shows this year were much stronger than in years past. The worst shows of this year were still much better than the worst of other years. Kudos!
I made a point to catch Smokin Dave and the Primo Dopes on the strength of their name.
"Sounds promising.." i thought.
I couldn't stay longer than a couple of minutes.
The Black Angels didn't do much for me, and what was his name, Ryan Shaw? Meh, that wasn;t so great either.
As far as the larger acts go, The Police really didn't do much for me like i hoped it would. I gave them a fighting chance, but after "Walking on the Moon", i could only stay for a few more songs before i went back to camp to get ready for The Flaming Lips.
It wasn't a bad set by any means, but throughout Ben Harpers set I was a bit dissapointed, I felt like he was up there just going through the motions, not really having fun.. Did anyone else feel this way or was it just me?

The atmosphere at that White Stripes show was unbeatable... they didn't seem to give a shit the dust was heavy or it was hotter then hell outside; and their new album is really damn catchy and good.
...not that I watched them.. but I was going in the fountain and what I heard was just bland
Yeah I forgot about that. I sat through all of their set to get a good spot for Ween and it was a really awkward show. I saw their appeal, but they did not fit in one bit.

I haven't seen him before to compare to, but i thought he was having a great time. Especially since he made several comments about he festival and the crowd.

I also had a blast at Ben Harper's show and felt a great vibe coming from him on the stage. Especially after JPJ walked off the stage you could tell Ben Harper was soaking in every moment of it
Loved Ben Harper and The White Stripes as well. Went in not knowing much about Ben Harper and not really liking the White Stripes at all. Now huge fans of both.

I agree, I'm really loving their new album - "Conquest" is f'n awesome!
I'm also mad excited because the Cold War Kids are joining them on their tour
...Not that they were bad by any means but was anyone else disappointed with the Cold War Kid's show? It seemed like the sound was screwed up and I'm completely obsessed over the lead's (Nathan's) voice but he seemed kind of weak that day and I was sad i didn't get to hear him belt it out live
hopefully when I catch them on tour, they'll be better

I (and everyone pointing a finger to the sky) thought that keller and WMDS sound was horrible. I don't know if the soundguy was a rookie or way too f'ed up. but it took forever for the band to be satisfied and even after that , the first 3 songs sounded liek the speakers were blown, so much static and cracking. But the band was pretty good, not as personal as keller's solo acts, but the guitarist was ripping em out. sounded good once they actually started playing.

these were my 2 favorites of the roo. ben was absolutly fantastic. was anyone else dissapointed in the national? i was expecting a lot from them and their show was just ok to me.

edit: whew! 100th post!
i wasnt a fan of the national, but its quite possible i was in a get off the stage and bring out RodGab mood at the time.

it was so much louder for widespread. people at our camp couldnt hear tool. but on sunday widespread was so loud that we could feel it.
i really only go for late night shows anyhow and i got a great show everynight.
I agree with you about both of those things. I didn't think Tool or The Police were really that great. I expected much better. It wasn't all their fault, though. They didn't get the sound right on the What Stage until Sunday. WSP was really good. Don't get me wrong I'm not a big fan of theirs, but they were the best headliner of the weekend easily. Not just because they played their entire spot and then some, but also because they put on a great show. I was blown away by a band I thought wouldn't, and I was disappointed by the groups I thought would be great.
The thing they did great on, which made my weekend (Galactic brought it!!!!) were the late nights. Friday night was great. I saw the Superjam, then went to check out a little bit of Cheese and the second I got there Keller came out to play with them. From there I caught the last hour of Mago...What a night. Saturday I went to the Galactic show....unbelievable.
No matter what happens to 'Roo. They will always have their late night. Which, IMO, makes the festival what it is.
I too was a bit... well disappointed seems like a harsh word for the Cold War Kids show. It was good, but it didn't knock my socks off and that could be due to sound issues.
I seventh the White Stripes I liked them okay before, but after that performance I am a major fan.
And with the original post, I too wasn't thrilled with Regina Spektor. If it was a smaller more intimate venue I would have found her charming, instead I found her performance lackluster.
The National The Annuals The Nightwatchman (I love Tom Morello, it just wasnt cutting it for me) The Police (The set didnt suck I just didnt say WOW Im listening to the Police. just a disappointment)

Yeah, I thought it was just because I was way off to the side, but that was the only show I left disappointed.

There were no bad sets at Roo whatsoever... there were things that I just wasn't in the mood for at the moment, but even when I moved on for personal reasons, everybody still totally rocked in whatever way they rock the best Oh, wait, I forgot that I suffered through about 20 minutes of Fountains of Wayne... maybe my brain is trying to block that out from my memory as a bad dream or something. But even saying that, there were a ton of tweens around me loving every second of that... so, well, ok back to my original statement-------there were no bad sets at Roo whatsoever, and that's how I feel about that
The Nightwatchman was just awful. Tom Morello is a god when it comes to lead guitar-man (see his guest appearance with Tool) but he just doesn't have "it" to do the solo thing.
The Police were good but like someone said, I didn't stand there going "wow I'm listening to The Police".
Adding onto other comments about the Which Stage, that has to be one of the worst stages I've ever seen at any festival. If you're not up close you're not getting a view. It needs screens or it needs moving to where there is a hill so you look down onto it.

No there weren't. "Tweens" refers to that awkward age "between" childhood and teenage, around the 10-12 range. I'm pretty sure there wasn't a group of 12 year old kids hanging around for Fountains of Wayne. Nice try at taking a shot at arguably the easiest target in this year's lineup. Kudos.
There was a group of 5 boys about that age with their parents right behind me, and other family units scattered all around... sorry if my semantics were off, ok there were KIDS all around in the crowd rocking out to the band, it was definitely the most family oriented crowd i saw all weekend... I actually wasn't trying to take a dig at the band, but rather trying to say that while all the bands at Roo may not have been for me, there were other's who did and do love those same bands... basically there is something at Roo for everyone, and that is why there are no bad sets ever at Roo
