^^^I think it's arguable given that Prince played every instrument on many of his albums. I think the combination of his songwriting prowess and his raw playing ability makes him at least a contender.
well truthfully ive seen kid rock bust out badass solos on every instrument on the stage. now now i wasnt at a kidrock concert for him. my sister won tickets to the metallica millenium newyears show. but kid rock played an american band and he did very good solos on the piano, drums, and guitar. i was impressed. but im sure prince would eat him up and spit him out onn all of those instruments(funny visual)

well now your taking it overboard. hes a hell of a musician. but buddy guy, bill frisell, james brown, bob dylan, steve winwood, the dead etc... all have him beat by a million light years. but i agree that im not sure how someone can hate on princes music unless they arent really familiar with it. its just the image that everyone dislikes i think... but the dude can rock!
I agree that some people tend to judge him on his image, but it's not a fair judgment since it seems to usually be based on his old image. The times have changed and so has he. He is truly an extraordinary musician in every possible sense. He doesn't just play one thing and play it well, he plays everything...and plays it very well! His true talent is most obvious when it comes to his guitar-work, but he's more capable on more instruments than almost anyone! I'm not saying that he's "better" than Buddy Guy or James Brown, but he's DEFINITELY comfortably in that league!
You're stupid. Prince is THE MAN. He doesn't lip sync and he can whale on the guitar. I don't know if you were drunk or sipping too much of that there absynth, but you can't go calling false shots around here.
Actually I don't drink, but maybe you and many others are right, it could have been sound issues, but after watching the video, i am sticking to my theory that the guitar was at least partially enhanced somehow.
And it is wail, not whale, on a guitar dumbass.
But if prince played roo, you can bet your ass I would be there, I just didn't get all hot and bothered by rain and explosions from last nites show.
What I think some people don't realize is that when Prince plays the guitar, sometimes while he's playing a note he doesn't strum it but picks it with the pinky of his fret hand.

One of the days i wore a purple rain shirt and one of the vendors asked me if i had been purified in the waters of lake minitonka. My friend didnt get it at all, it was pretty funny.
that's some funny shit right there....i was sayin that all last night after the halftime show, no one got it.

If you watch the half time video and only watch his fret hand you can see its always going. Since i dont play guitar i did a double take the first time he took his hand away, but it didnt that me very long to notice his fret hand still playing.
I seem to be in the huge minority on this one, I don't play guitar or anything, so I will recant my speculative statement, I guess he was really playing, my karma can't take much more of a beatdown.
good stuff man. try to find out how they make those lightning bolts for me. and do me a favor. flash a tit. just for a sec. you can blame it on your wardrobe and j t-lake, dont worry about any trouble. ;D
Really? There are basketball coaches that have never played basketball, movie critics that have never acted, directed, produced a movie....right? So, whats the big deal? You don't have to be in a band to have an idea if they are good or not.

I have a bud who thinks that Prince walks on water so he has sat me down and made me watch dvds. I will say it made me appreciate the guy alot more. I didn't know he was that great of a guitar player. He does the hammer down on the fret board quite a bit. Prince would blow everybody away at Bonnaroo . I think he is the only guy that can do whatever he wants and be credible the whole time even an american idol performance doesn't shoot him down.
Yes, I still have the Prince of yesterday stuck in my head. I'm sure he would be great at Roo. I would, more than likley, sue that time to check out some other acts or get a good spot for the next show.

in my post about prince, i never once discredited him as a guitarist and/or musician. Prince is an incredibly good guitarist
i still stand by my post saying i don't want him @ bonnaroo, which is mostly for 2 reasons. first, i think his whole "artist formally known as" era was a bit rediculous. a record company making you a prisoner???? please! they payed him millions of dollars every year, and then he goes on a b1tch fest about having to do another album. somebody please call the whambulance
and secondly, i have never gotten into his music. at all. purple rain, when doves cry, or any of his other stuff has just never done it for me. but that is my opinion. if you want prince @ bonnaroo, you are entitled to that. but i am also entitled to NOT wanting prince @ bonnaroo

your original post aid Prince sucks, which is ok to say if that is your opinon, but you also said he had no place at roo and now you say he's an incredibly good guitarist. I believe people take offense to negative comments that don't provide any type of real criticism. You don't have to like him, nobody likes everything at roo all the time, but that's what makes it fun for everyone too. Just calm down the negativity and everythings cool. I bet if you saw him live you would gain a new respect for him, unless you don't like funk.

I think most people would agree that prince would fit in well at bonnaroo. But what we can ALL agree on is that we arent always going to agree, so theres no need to bash on peoples opinions for basically no reason.
