I was just wondering who you guys think could play this spot, if they do reinstate it. I think it's a great idea, and would give some band a great chance.
My idea for it would be My Morning Jacket. They've outgrown their tent night show from last year, yet lots of people say they can't imagine seeing them any other time than night. Plus, it would thin out the headliner, especially towards the end, as people moved on. I think they could rock the Which Stage like never before. I also thought of repeats from Primus or the Trey Anastasio Band, (court case pending) or the oft-discussed Tom Waits. Who else do you think could rock the spot?

that woudl blow my mind, i could see tool not headlining; if they ehadlined they prlly knwo thay'd ahve a lot of angry festival goers, so i coudl see them declinign a headlining spot

but you also gotta think about late night tents, which would make even tougher competition, and i pretty much like everything but rap and country, so for me its harder to decide since i like so much
And hornet, they are big enough for this stage. Have you seen there stage setup before? Aslo their concerts sell out rediculously fast.
I haven't seen them for a few years, but are they still doing the projections on the big screen?
Edit: Their tour archive is fantastic! I just realized that I saw them twice in 2001 in Chicago and haven't seen them since! Here are details on both shows...
Here's a review of the Vic show that stoked some huge memories. It should also offer a little insight to those who haven't seen them before...
the opening band, album leaf, was very good. they sounded kind of like godspeed you black emperor (and i wasn't the only one to think so). their set lasted a little less than half an hour and not even twenty mintues after they had left stage did the lights black out and sigur ros descend from the clouds and into our presence.
the images projected onto the back of the set were amazing, as they went along with the music in an indirectly perfect manner. "vaka" was played, strangely enough, with the doll face from the von cover projected...the doll looked liked it was near a candle, a soft orange light flickered and made the shadows of its contours dance. vaka ended, and i regained a bit of my senses, i was a little shocked since the band pretty much started playing unannounced in total darkness. the lights came up a bit and i looked around to notice that everybody around me either had a tear in their eye or was flat out bawling. i raised a hand to my cheek... wetness. truly a magical expirience.
the vic was pretty tiny, though packed to the brim. it was just about the most peaceful (and diverse) crowd i've ever seen at a concert. men and women aged 18-60 were there, all were "getting into it."
it was my first time hearing the nothing song, but i was impressed by it. the song lead in directly to an extended e-bow solo replacing the horns at the begining of ny batteri. i have gone to many a concert in my day and i can say that the e bow solo was the first time i can ever say that a musician has done something so beautiful that it (pardon the vernacular) flat out blew my fucking mind. it started as a small gurgle, i thought that maybe he was tuning it or something, only it kept going. the gurgle grew like a snowball down a hill, gaining level upon level of what had to have been sheer beauty. a minute or so into the solo i looked up, thinking that the rest of the band was playing, they weren't. all the noise was coming from the e bow. wow.
if you ever get a chance to see this band perform live, do it. this is easily the best small venue show that i've ever been to.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it
Has there been any repeat late-night acts yet? I can't think of one. That's why I'd be surprised if MMJ or Primus played late-night again. I think SCI w/Keller is a good bet. And Tool would be a dream come true.
"We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, movie gods, and rock stars. But we wont, and we're slowly learning that fact & we're very, very pissed off......."

Well, if they're badass enough to get invited for the 5th time in a row, I guess another late night wouldn't really surprise me.

Dan, I also find that comment kinda funny, considering KWI played latenight in '02. But to be honest, I really do see that happening, or at least a SCI show w/ a Keller cameo (assuming he's also there).
I'm thinking MMJ's gonna get the main-stage opener for a headliner. That's what my gut tells me. Of course my gut is also hungry
EDIT: SCI hasn't done late-night though. I'm saying them w/ Keller as a guest, not so much a Keller Incident. It's all semantics really. I'd love to see MMJ or Primus do another late-night stint. It just seems like Superfly wants to spread the late-night love to as many different bands as possible.

well i guess thats not true, cuz soemtimes you should be hungry but you're too upset to be, well anyway, i agree with you in that i think mmj will be a mainstage opener, or at least close the which stage before the headliner. a latengiht two years in a row migh be too good to be true
didnt they do away with the stage latenight? i think all the latenights will be tents. if grab didnt get the second stage i dont know who would this year. im guessing a sci latenight, and i also think that galactic will be. that would be a hip hop latenight id seriously have to consider. i love galactic, and that would be awesome show!!!!!

yeah they did get rid of the stage latengiht, but they gotta do something to compete with cochella's rage reunion, so i coudl see them reinstating the stage latengiht
well i love rage as much as the next guy. but i doubt roo will have trouble competeing with an hour long rage set. id take any of last years latenights over that. now a 3 hour rage latenight would be a different story.
