Not a Hozier fan but he was good. Didn’t see the whole thing because I took my kids back to the car to get a jump on traffic but the 1/2 or so I caught was solid.
Wednesday ripped. Black Pumas were good but standard. Molly Tuttle was great, Beck was sloppy, MUNA ruled.
1. Molly Tuttle and Sir Woman: fantastic way to start the day and the festival. I’m not sure what special set Newport was alluding to re: Molly Tuttle, but still a fun set. Sir Woman sounds much better live than on album.
2. Muna and Petey: I split Muna and Petey and fortunately had good spots for each so I was able to get into each. Both understood the assignment and put on a Newport unique set. I still wish Petey wasn’t acoustic, but it was much better acoustic than I expected. Loved the Miya Folick guest. As for Muna, appreciated the setlist they chose for Newport.
3. Hozier: See my other post discussing why I thought he was one of the better Newport headliners.
4. Black Pumas: they sound much better live than they do on album. I keep forgetting that. (Makes me wonder if they could use better production in the studio.) This was a great set to place before Hozier. Great 1-2 punch on the main stage to end Day 1.
5. Glitterfox: Super fun bike stage set. The singer is electric.
6. Guster and the dragonflies: a fun way to spend 45 minutes in the middle of the day.
Wednesday was fine but didn’t keep my attention as much as I hoped; they were my most anticipated act for the day. I love Adrienne Lenker’s music, but I’m not sure what’s the best way to experience it live. (Newport is much better than … say Bonnaroo or Lollapalooza … but still feels like it was missing something and would be better at even a smaller folk fest.) Could have taken or left Beck.
Already not looking forward to tomorrow’s security. Definite lowlight of the day today.

Slim + Craigie x3 Jobi riccio x2 Tre burt x2 Donovan frankreiter x1 Craigie x1 LS/JC + ballroom thieves x1 LS/Jc x1 LS + 1 lucius (jess wolfe) Steve Poltz x2 Erin + Mat + Paul x2 Hayes Carll x2 Slim + Craigie x ?
Oh hey, Lucius.
Love that Hayes Carll is in town.
Jess is VERY pregnant. Surprised she agreed to play, but I’m glad she did.
I picked tonight’s after show to eliminate the conflict for tomorrow, but honestly Craigie and slim played so little, it didn’t really do the job. It was a fun show and basically a mini Newport of C level acts doing a song or two. It was a fun night
Great Newport Day. The Beck surprise and the Hozier set really satisfied the 'this is special and unique to Newport'. Agree that Beck should have rehearsed the set or, even if he didn't, not say it out loud five times. That being said, I really appreciated the history of Folk trip and there were moments where there was a lot of talent being shared. What turned it around was the last 5 songs which were his own Beck songs. He did several from Sea Change and a pretty joyous rendition of 'Loser' which made the whole thing worth it for me.
Hozier was fantastic. Had low expectations of a standard headliner set and he really got me into it. The entire Fort was standing out past the walkway. Joan Baez came out and just danced during one song. I am a sucker for Mavis and company doing the Weight and the closer with having Joan Baez lead 'We Shall Overcome' was exactly what makes Newport Newport. Her voice is not what it was, but her spirit was strong.
Outside of that: Sir Woman and Wednesday were both sets that pleasantly surprised. Had very low expectations for both and they both brought a lot of energy and entertainment. Wednesday was mostly just noise and spirit, but that can be fun for 45 minutes.
Shovels & Rope had a great set and Molly Tuttle was great as well.
I know I have harped on last year's Sunday closer enough, but the difference between having everyone out for Hozier and Billy Strings all alone on the stage was night and day. Friday felt like a Sunday. Fest is off to a great start.
Piano recital at Jane Pickens - It's was Paul Cauthen playing the same song 2x Chaparelle, Madison Cunningham, the backseat lovers josh and Jonas , Craig Finn of the hold steady, Rhett Madison, Theo katzman, briscoe, Ryan miller of guster , Hannah cohen, Sam Evian

Had tickets to both after shows, think I made the right call for myself going to Craigie and slim.

Security is better staffed today, just fyi. Two staff members per line running bag checks is expediting a bit. They also began 15 minutes earlier than yesterday.
Still 6 detectors and no "no bags" express lane to start off, but small victories
I’ve been in security for 10 minutes so far and haven’t moved. That weird cluster of people before you move to the next cluster for security. So I’m not convinced it’s any better yet.
Edit: after a 10 minute hold, it moved a little faster today than yesterday. Whew.

Do you know what katzman played
Be The Wheel
Was t a ramen place last night and standing next to a guy that I thought was Theo Katzzman. Had a very strange interaction with his girlfriend and wanted to ask him if it was him. She called me the candy man. They were talking about going to the Pickens. Does he have a buzz cut now?

I just went Friday but it was the perfect amount of people. Easy to love around, lines weren’t too long, could find a seat at any of the stages if you tried hard enough, always a place to stand. Wish if were always like that.

It really depends on where and when. I've been moving around pretty easily and freely getting close to shows but have also usually planned to avoid tunnel traffic and heavy periods of migration. Today ive gotten around bouncing between stages and have mostly avoided most issues.
Some food lines starting to get longer now. Hoping I can get somewhat decent spot for Dave and Gil and the end of war on drugs
