$393 and change for a garden variety GA ticket w/ USPS and ticket insurance.
never have i ever: bought ticket insurance
a three-day 2-pack plus shipping is 712, so $356 each. Last year I got tickets on stubhub a week before the festival at $245 each, which i think will be completely possible again this year, so i'm holding out.

Yeah, I had gotten a reasonable deal on stubhub last year too, probably what I'm doing this year too. As there isn't really any "must see" acts for me, id like to make sure I can catch most of the "Would love to check them out" acts, so probably waiting on the schedule to drop to make a decision.

Well, I skipped In Between Days last year due to an MBTA diversion, and I am juggling a few health issues right now. I intend to be at Boston Calling, and the location is very convenient for me, but what's that old saying? Man plans and God laughs.
I usually find myself having a bit of envy of at least a few acts from Gov Ball, not so much this year. Curious to see what Coachella brings out and if it actually drops today…

Yeah, not trying to yuck anyone’s yum, but trying to put our line up in a bit of context of what the 2024 festival scene looks like

We all figured that there would be a lot of overlap with the other LN festivals but with BC unsure what lane it wants to swim in, there's no identity for the festival. Despite the overall weak 2024 festival lineups, Shaky is still alt/indie focused, despite Noah Kahan's inclusion this year (but that's a ticket mover), Railbird is still country/americana focused, Rolling Loud is still hip-hop focused, etc. BC is what?

“20/30-something Indie Pop”, like if those wide brim hats and overalls were a festival
none of the live nation fests beat the "well every other fest also looks bad" allegations
bonnaroo is tolerable imo but yeah the others are horrendous
its crazy to me that people would just suck it up rather than look at with the institution that's entirely responsible for the reason most American festival lineups suck. "it's just a bad festival year" it's a bad booking team

the other thing that sticks out to me is that most of these acts seem to have come up in the past year or two. most of the artists on the LN fest circuit are just flash in the pan tik tok artists

how is it live nation's fault that ppl want to spend $250+ on a Renee Rapp standalone ticket

it isn't, but i'm on my hands and knees begging for a decent alternative

What seems to be working and keeping people happy are festivals with a narrower focus. Unless you're as big as the big five, festivals need to stop trying to be everything to everyone. Pick a few sympatico lanes and stick to them.
Hinterlands in Iowa, just announced, is a near perfect lineup of artists who are just musically diverse enough to provide some variety, yet seem like they'll gel together perfectly. To me, it's a model for how broadly a smaller festival can go.

I think it's both and that Coachella lineup confirms it. Less total acts than last year and headliners that anyone could get and many don't want (looking at Doja Cat). Outside of the headliners, there's maybe 13 that I haven't seen that I wish BC had booked (Young Fathers, bar italia, Blur, Brittany Howard, Tinashe, BICEP, to name a few).
Back on the BC talk - given that Leon Bridges currently doesn't have any dates listed after BC, I would love for him to stick around and pop into Khruangbin's set on Saturday and do a few of their collab tracks like Texas Sun.

I wonder if Leon and Khru would do a co-headlining tour together. Both can easily sell out mid-sized venues, but I’m not sure either can at large amphitheaters and arenas. Maybe like a 10-15 date run in major cities?
11/19: Caribou 11/22: Ranger Trucco 11/29: Armand Van Helden* 1/16: L'Impératrice 1/30: Jamie xx 2/1: DJ Seinfeld 2/7: Mild Minds* 3/1: Father John Misty* 3/19: Confidence Man 3/23: DARKSIDE 5/8: Rüfüs Du Sol
I spent some time watching videos of the Friday artists and I think I'm just going to sit the day out and be well-rested for the next two days. I had only heard Leon Bridges' earliest stuff previously, which at the time struck me as being more of a piece with 60's - 70's soul, but his newer material doesn't do it for me at all.
Given that the price is roughly the same for two one-day passes and one three-day pass, it's no loss and I'd rather be ready to do two long days on Sat and Sun, rather than go on Friday just for the sake of going.

There’s gotta be some sort of compromise/middle ground in there. You could go early Friday. Sit a lot more than normal/be much more casual/leave early/etc, and still maintain plenty of energy for the rest of the weekend. The Wolff Sisters are actually one of my favorite small local bands and they’re folk/Americana/I think you’d like them. There has to be something else in there to make it worth it, if only a chance to wait in a long line for a food vendor you care about without worrying about missing music you also care about. It’s essentially free entry if you have a 3-day so why not? If I was completely unmotivated by Friday I think I’d be saying “as long as it’s not raining I’ll show up and hang out, but weather becomes the most important factor with a lineup I’m more or less uninterested in”

idk why you're trying to rationalize with the most stubborn boomer on inforoo

That all makes sense, but I'd hate to be losing energy before the one-two punch of The Killers/Hozier on Sunday night. I was able to make it all the way from Wunderhorse through Gizz on Sunday last year by taking it easy on Saturday and only seeing three artists (and by leveraging a couple of health issues to ask for an ADA wristband. ADA seating definitely helped me get through the day in that heat. I sat through everything except The Dripping Tap). I want to make it through the last encore on Saturday and Sunday, and I'd hate to think that I ran out of gas too early on either day by seeing the same performers I could see for free or for cheap around town.
I might go in for an Orange Stage act or two on Friday, depending upon how the schedule shakes out. (I may have seen The Wolff Sisters perform for free in Harvard Square years ago, although I may be confusing them with Lula Wiles.)

I dug deeper into the Leon Bridges stuff on YouTube and it was really only the most recent video, Naomi, that I didn't like. The rest of it was good, but nothing I'd pay to see outside of a festival. I'll probably just go in for him on Friday, maybe catching something on Orange right before, if there's something interesting there.
With Neil Young starting to show up in lineups, Boston Calling's failure to book him is feeling like a big mistake. His appeal cuts across so many generations and audiences that he's tailor-made to headline festivals.
I'm sure he'll wind up performing at some shed halfway to Providence, which doesn't do me a bit of good.
