Has anyone else watched Contagion recently? I thought it would freak me out, but really it just pissed me off how much more responsibly these fictional characters responded to their fictional disease! It was like watching a pandemic response pipe dream.
Watched it back in April. At the time, thought it foreshadowed a lot of what was happening with COVID. Who knew things would get so much worse.
This is an mRNA vaccine. Unlike the Oxford vaccine that is causing a lot of bad side effects. Pfizer has a decent track record and all that Viagra money to play with. Interestingly they took no money from any government. They are going to mass produce it before getting FDA approval. If all goes well, we could be seeing health care workers getting it by November or December.
This in addition to the vaccine by Moderna. It’s another mRNA vaccine that’s entering phase three trials now. These may wind up being the safest and most effective.
Pfizer is increasingly confident that its efforts to develop a coronavirus vaccine will be successful. In a July 7 interview with TIME, Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said he believes that Food and Drug Administration approval could come as soon as October. On the basis of promising results in an early-stage trial released on July 1, Pfizer has dramatically increased the projections for the number of doses it will produce this year, from tens of millions to 100 million. Bourla also disclosed that the company has begun commercial talks with governments around the world about how many doses they will receive. Bourla is so convinced his $52 billion global pharmaceutical giant is on the right track that he has decided Pfizer will start producing the vaccine before receiving approval from the FDA. It’s a move as risky as it is unorthodox. Pfizer’s vaccine, being developed with its German biotech partner BioNTech, uses a novel genetics-based approach called messenger RNA; Bourla acknowledges that no messenger-RNA vaccine has ever been approved to prevent infectious disease to date. The race to develop a vaccine is one of the most consequential and urgent scientific challenges of our time, and there are 180 vaccines in development, according to the Milken Institute. Other pharma CEOs have been less aggressive in their projections about when vaccines will be available, suggesting that any vaccine is at least a year away. Pfizer is set to launch a large-scale clinical trial later in July, which will involve 30,000 people at 150 locations by the end of the test period. Bourla, 58, who was born in Greece and trained to be a veterinarian before working his way up the ranks at Pfizer, plans to price the vaccine to make a profit, but believes governments should distribute the first doses to the most vulnerable, at no cost. Subscribe to The Leadership Brief by clicking here. (This interview with Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla has been condensed and edited for clarity) What did the data that Pfizer and BioNTech released on July 1 show? That the vaccine in humans created the very robust immune responses in all individuals that received the vaccine. And those responses were also able to kill the virus. What we learned is that this vaccine can neutralize the virus. So it was a big moment? For me, it was the moment when I saw the data, plus many other data that we haven’t published yet, [that] made me say that until now I was thinking if we have a vaccine. Now I’m discussing when we’re going to have a vaccine. Let’s talk timing. You said your reaction was not if but when. So when? Well, let me be accurate and factual here. One, we will only know if the vaccine works when we have the final study. We have a lot of indications that make me feel that really it should make it … We should be able in the September time frame to have enough data to say if the vaccine works or not. And to submit that to the FDA. So for a potential approval in October, if we are lucky. It’s feasible. And when will it be ready to be distributed? The most interesting and important thing is that if the vaccine is successful, which means that if we are convinced about it, effective and safe, and the FDA is convinced about it, effective and safe, we will have already manufactured doses that will be readily available. So have you ever done that before, started manufacturing pre–FDA approval to get it ready to ship? No, never. Are you currently manufacturing the possible vaccine itself or just the bottles and the containers it will go in? Pretty soon we will start manufacturing actual vaccine. We may not bottle it yet because we are waiting, but there are a lot of stages. You’ve invested more than $1 billion in this. What if the FDA rejects the vaccine? We will just have to write it off and call it a day. We will throw it away. It’s only money we’re going to lose. In terms of scale, if you got FDA approval in October, what kind of shipments do you anticipate? We are planning to have up to a hundred million doses for this year. We’ll be fewer in October, a bit more in November, a bit more in December. And then we will have approximately 1.1-1.3 billion doses in 2021.
With a B or with an M in 2021? With a B like my name. How does your CFO feel about this plan, potentially writing off the investment in the vaccine development? He’s also responsible for manufacturing. So he’s on the hot seat right now. But from day one, it was very clear that this is not business as usual. So yes, if you were calculating return on investment, we would never do these things. We were discussing that back in March, what that means to human lives, to the economy of the world. So it was a must, that we must take those measures. TIME for Learning partnered with Columbia Business School to offer a series of online, on-demand classes on topics like effective leadership, negotiation and customer-centric marketing. To sign up or learn more, click here. How did the board respond? When they heard the plans, they were extremely supportive. And I think this is what our investors want to hear, that Pfizer can use their resources and can distinguish itself by bringing a solution to the world that very few can bring. That creates a significant value proposition for this industry and for us specifically. I can’t measure that with the cost of, let’s say, $2 billion that we may lose on this thing. That’s your total investment, $2 billion? I think that in total, and most of that will be this year. Are you in regular touch with Dr. Fauci about this? He’s aware of our progress. I don’t want to speak for him, but I know that he’s cautiously optimistic. I’m using the exact expression that he used, cautiously optimistic.
Question for others with anxiety and panic attacks. What are some of the things that you do to settle that anxiety bubble that forms in your gut? What do you do to quite the mind? And when you feel a panic attack coming on, is there anything that you do to help reduce it?
Since Kyle tested positive after quarantining for 14 days already, my anxiety has taken over almost completely. I have been having panic attacks randomly and often. It's always been bad, but not this bad and I open to suggestions.

I developed a drinking habit.
I don't really drink. I do smoke weed though, and my intake has definitely increased. That usually helps but I am off the charts right now.
Tea Party Asshole Rep. Griffith has it. He was recently at a right-winger roundtable where he wore his mask. But apparently that didn't matter as they didn't clean the microphone between speakers.

If you're speaking literally about the anxiety bubble in the gut, I find that taking a massive shit helps a lot. No joke. There's an evolutionary perspective says that the need to void when anxious is due to the body wanting to make itself as light as possible in case you need to run from a predator. So then once you squirt it out you're more "ready" for whatever is causing the fear response.
Personally, if I'm already anxious weed can make it worse - it helps my brain find new alleys to go down. Alternately, if I'm in the throes of anxious thinking already, a really small toke can just take the edge off. Low-dose edibles is where it's at for me for more long-term anxiety management. In general I do better when feeling strongly tethered to reality, hence the small doses. I know you're experienced with that though so I'm sure you've found what works for you already.
As for panic attacks, I actually egg them on so they can pass through me. It relieves all that crazy tension and the overwhelming cry is cathartic. However if you're having panic attacks on a regular basis I don't think this would be a healthy or productive option.
My back-pocket quick fix is improv singing. Just random words with a random melody or whatever you're able to do at the time. It's an engaging activity that utilizes multiple brain regions - creativity, use of language, breath/bodily control, etc - and makes it much, much more difficult for the anxiety to take hold. Like when Kyle was a baby did you ever rock him and sing random things to him? Just do that basically. It might feel silly if you're just doing it to yourself but that's far preferable to panic attacks. And if you can't aren't comfortable with making things up on the spot, singing in general is still very helpful.
I hope you find relief in one way or another. <3

A prescription from my doctor, otherwise I got nothing. Just riding it out.

I was classically trained actually, but I have never even thought to distract a panic attack by singing. That is a great idea, I will definitely put that in my pocket. Usually it swells so fast all I can see is the shit that build up of anxiety and pressure if that makes sense. I use music for my depression as well. (Side note, I sung You are My Sunshine to Kyle when he was little, and changed you'll never know Dear to KYLE. It's our state song, Kyle learned in first grade that it isn't his name in the song.)
My herbal use is YEARS of tinkering to figure out my blend. Luckily thanks to legalization in other states it makes it much easier. I use a hybrid indica dominate, low sativa and edibles as well. If I get a sativa I am fucked, I can't even pretend.

If you want to watch something that hits closer to how scientists and such are treated by a conservative government and actually happened, look up And The Band Played On. Its about HIV/AIDS and the people who discovered it and what they did. They were stopped at almost every turn, whether it was funding or politics. Chalk it up to the Reagan administration not giving 2 shits about LGBT. It was an HBO movie, so if you have HBO Max its sitting there. Similar parallels as to right now.

I've been rewatching The Strain because I never originally finished it and forgot that vampirism is treated more like a virus in it so the first season is full of shit where the main character, an epidemiologist, is constantly getting ignored and told not to worry as he sees just how bad things are going to get. Of course, they ignore the scientist and it all goes to hell.

Great recommendation - I second this...I haven't seen the movie in forever, but it definitely mirrors what we have seen with the handling of this pandemic.
This is fucking awful. Where did you go? Chelsea went to Med Express last Sunday and got hers in 3-4 days. There's a LabCorp website you can check your results on, if that's who you're waiting on, but I'm not sure who all they service. Ugh. That's unbelievable.

Yeah, the cast was really good too, it has everyone in it. I remember seeing it right along with the 3rd season of real world SF which had Pedro who had HIV.
Getting my test on Thursday. Had a slightly elevated temp yesterday (99.4) and some gastric issues; yesterday my gf had a headache and was a little dizzy. I feel like I'm being paranoid but with the degree of asymptomatic spread and whatnot I feel like being overly cautious is appropriate. It sucks cuz the fam is saying goodbye to my grandparents' house of 50 years on Saturday but I can't think of a way to safely make it work.

For me, anything physical helps the best for the first half of your question (anxiety bubble/quieting the mind): playing basketball, walking/running, sex, working out, eating, working, cleaning, etc. Breathing exercises and meditation help me too, but more to mitigate my anxious feelings than when they're actually coming on if that makes sense. I like some of the guided Calm meditations on YouTube, but also just a regular breathing meditation for 15-20 minutes early in the day usually helps. Oh, I couldn't do this at all, because I'm addicted to coffee, but cutting your caffeine completely would help as well.
Next, I would say talking to someone -- a good phone call to a friend or someone that knows me well/family usually helps, just to talk it out. For me, personally, when I still smoked, weed did not help but everyone is different on all these, and you know yourself best. I know staying off my phone (like click-bait) helps during COVID and staying away from some of the news/triggers/stressors around the virus, but that's nearly impossible for me.
As far as when the actual panic attacks are coming on, that's a tougher question, but grounding techniques and exercises help. For me, it's more about mitigation and doing things that I can to keep my anxiety in check, and it may seem obvious, but sleeping 8-9 hours a day, eating right and routinely, working out and having a regular sex life all help so much. As does a good album, getting lost in work, playing Scrabble. When I used to play video games, just being mindless on a video game helped a ton. Walking in nature by the house now with the dog, talking to friends, listening to a good record, reading a book that's not stressful or triggering. Hope this helps. Um... I'm just going off the top of my head.
I don't really drink. I do smoke weed though, and my intake has definitely increased. That usually helps but I am off the charts right now.
I truly wish I could. But being in a job with random drug screens in the south really bites. I really missed my opportunity during the shut down to live like a college kid again.

Getting a test & quarantining in the meantime is the right call here. I still have no idea if I had a super mild case back in May or not, but if I did, my symptoms were: dizziness, headache, some GI issues, and general fatigue for 3-4 days. Seems like the common set of symptoms for really mild cases.
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.
Also, it was a WEIRD ass headache—felt like it spanned the circumference of my skull, and was almost like this constant pressure pushing in on my head. Was not a fan. Lasted off and on for two weeks or so, while the other symptoms only lasted a few days.

This was hilarious and oh so sad...Fuck our country...
I wonder how many less idiots would have this anti-mask opinion though if Trump hadn't constantly spread this bullshit message for the past 4 months?!
Without a doubt if Trump had worn a mask from the jump we wouldn't even be talking about this.
"That's just a talking point for TV bro"
I love how they respond like "What?" and confused and the idiots who get so worked up can't process how to go against that. The dude on the bike kept yelling about a muzzle and the guy at the end who was asked "Hey man maybe we'll do a happy hour" just couldn't deal lol

Oh most def...I think most of us on here would agree with that notion. It's so fucking frustrating...And some people out there, even if they aren't Trumpsters, don't believe Trump has any blood on his hands. They're just living with their heads in the sand, refusing to acknowledge his central role in our incredibly piss-poor response to this pandemic. Our economy and quality of life has suffered tremendously, and unnecessarily, because of our bigoted Bunker Bitch.
What percentage of people do you all actually think would take the vaccine? So many people have gone apeshit over wearing masks and running with so much fake info and conspiracies and I'm afraid that once the vaccine is available, things will turn up a notch with hysteria. I wouldn't be shocked if this divide ends up turning a ton more people into anti-vaxxers and the turnout for immunization is much lower than expected. I've already seen so many comments on Facebook and such with people saying they will never get the vaccine.

99.9%. Its going to be mandated, like the measles vaccine or the other vaccines that we have in society. There will be a small percentage that will take themselves and their children completely out of society in order to not take the vaccine sure, but the vast majority will take it.
