Really, Sigur Ros was the band I said I would most love to see at bonnaroo but who I really did not think would ever be there. This is THE HEADLINER of Bonnaroo 2008 as far as I am concerned. If they dont get a full late night set I will be pissed off. Damn, i get so excited just thinking about it. I think it will be EPIC
K so I listened to one of their CDs (the one with no name) and I honestly don't get them..... What am I missing? Going by the other bands I love, I think I should like them.
Sigur Ros really takes some getting used to. I know it took me a few listens before I really "got it," and the untitled album is no easy one to "get." Just give it another spin, and if you don't get it that time let it be for a little while. Listen to it every now and then, you'll be sure to hear something new each time that you swear wasn't there before. They're a hard band to just jump right into their catalog and declare yourself a fan.
My favorites off the untitled album are tracks 3 and 8, if that helps any. Also, if you can listen to any of their other albums that might help, too. The first few tracks off of Takk... might be more exciting to you. I also really enjoy the song "Staralfur" off Agaetis Byrjun . I think it's their most beautiful song.
This is the best band at 'roo this year HANDS DOWN. I'm going to be pissed if this isn't a late night set!!! If the sun is up, it just won't be the same. It will be amazing but not a mind opening experience as it would be if it was pitch dark. Please let this be a late night set!!!

I don't know. I've always liked that they are like a "rock n' roll" orchestra. What with Jonsi bowing his guitar, and touring with a string quartet. I also appreciate orchestral music quite a bit. I hope you come around to them. They are one of my favorite bands, and I can't wait to see what they do at Bonnaroo!

( ) can be a little disorienting to the uninitated. There's something more cold and distant about it (though track 4 still takes my breath away).
As the above poster said, Check out Agaetis Byrjun. Staralfur is a song so beautiful that it transcends language. To me, that's really what this band is about. The vocals act as further instrumentation. The fact that you don't understand what they mean makes it that much more personal. It's otherworldly and familiar at the same time. Other highlights for me on that album are the title track and Svefn-g-englar. Enjoy
I just listed to Sigur Ros for the first time today, and I was blown away. I dont know why I havent heard this band before. This band alone makes up for mettalica headlining
as a firs time listener, what album should i start off with first? any help is greatly appreciated. I really want to take a listen as i doze off to sleep tonight

This is definately themain reason Im coming this year. I thought that they miight stop through finally, and was correct. Thank you! I agree that this makes up far metallica, and also think this show will be as you said "EPIC!"
They better get an uber latenight set. Ive never seen them live but I can just understand. I was turned on to sigur ros one night I decided to burn some time and watch a lava lamp for 2 hours listening to () and agaeits (however you spell it) and I came to the conclusion that it is perfect lava lamp music. Something you would listen to in the womb. No bad trips coming from whichever tent this is, guaranteed!

also I see this band as creating conceptual albums. So try to listen to them as a whole (alike dakside, ok computer, etc..) Id say start out with eiter Agatetis Byrnjyn (again, spelling..) or () they are both equally great! also try using good speakers or decent headphones, it makes all the difference.

I'd say their most recent album Takk... is the best place for someone to discover them. It's easier to digest, and the first two tracks are so wonderfully gorgeous!
The coolest thing happened today while I was walking across campus. I was listening to Glósóli, and just as the big crescendo came up, this crazy hawk flew over me and perched on a tree. I think that's a good implication that the show is going to be insanely epic!

Ok I will try a different CD and see how that goes.
It has taken me a whole year to actually warm up to the The Mars Volta and now I LOVE them, so I am ok with coming back to something when I am in a different mood or different state of mind and trying again.
Definitely start off with Takk... if you've never heard them before. Once you get a feel for that, move on to either ( ) or Agaetis Byrjun, they're both amazing albums.
I remember reading above how Jonsi's vocals are basically another instrument in the band. This couldn't be more true. If you're expecting something to sing along with, don't listen to Sigur Ros. Nothing is in English. Most of the songs are in Icelandic, and on all of the ( ) album the vocals are sung in a language that the band made up! How cool is that? They call it "Hopelandic."
K so I listened to one of their CDs (the one with no name) and I honestly don't get them..... What am I missing? Going by the other bands I love, I think I should like them.
Word....also...how the hell do you pronounce their name?
(Go' head take my karma I don't care....I'm losing it by the ton anyway cause I'm excited about Metallica)

I'm giving their latest album (Hvarf - Heim) a listen now. Fairly mellow, but Hafsol (track 9, mebbe?) has some good energy. Very contemplative, futuristic, angelic. Reminds me a bit of Explosions in the Sky.
I would suggest reading some cerebral and sci-fi-ish while playing it... maybe some Orson Scott Card or Neal Stephenson. Stay clear of any Gibson or Sterling.

i believe its sea-gur rose...but i can't confirm that.
cool bit of info, though...the band was named after jonsi's sister, Sigurros, who was born the day the band was formed. in english it means "victory rose"
I have never seen them and know nothing about them and this is why I LOVE BONNAROO and LOVE this message board. Now I am pumped to see a band I have never even heard one note of!!!!

You won't be disappointed. Sigur Ros' performance this year will be the stuff of legends.

This is the band that jumped right out of the lineup when I read it. I have never seen them live, but they just seem like the perfect Friday late night show (or Saturday I guess). Their sound is so sweeping and epic, I can't wait to get caught up in it.
This is one of the great things about Roo. I had never heard of this band till yesterday. I usually try and check out several bands that are new to me when I hear that they are going to be at Roo. I just watched the first dvd of Heima and am completely blown away. This could be a highlight of the weekend. I saw several bands for the first time at Roo, that went on to being some of my favorite bands ( Drive-By Truckers and My Morning Jacket). If you haven't watched this DVD then you should definitely check it out. I'm pretty excited.

i listened to a little of sigur ros last night since everyone seems to be excited about it and I have no idea who they are...I don't know if I pulled up the wrong thing sounded like really slow trance-y enya to me? I'll check out the reccomendations on here...but is it all very slow music, if so how could this be a good late night? help!

This really is one of the most exciting bands here. I can't possibly see them not getting a late night set! Can you imagine their music during the day? It just wouldn't be the same. They are one of the most beautiful bands I've ever heard and I've never seen them live! Aaaaaah I think I just came. Yup. Gotta clean up now.
littlebirdie: You clearly don't understand the term "epic"!
They aren't a band you can just pull up a sample, and enjoy right away. Sit down at night with a glass of wine and no distractions, and throw on some Sigur Ros. You'll be speaking Hopelandic in no time.

I'm with you on that one, birdie.... the only way I want to hear them late night is if I'm tucked in my sleeping bag and ready to pass out. I just can't see myself recovering from something that mellow after 2am.
But... a nice sunset, perhaps...
Dunno. Have to check out some vids on Youtube, see what their stage show is like. Either way, I dig their stuff. Maybe you've just got to be in the right setting...
