I fell behind in January but let's do this! Haven't listened to BBNG or Dan Deacon, but this Father John Misty album is incredible. So personal and cohesive. Really going to be hard to top it.

Like everyone else I'm on on that Father John Misty album. It's so great. First listen, I felt that it lost a bit of the Wes Anderson-esque quirkiness that made Fear Fun so endearing. In reality he just repurposed the humor to present some complex emotions in a way that wouldn't seem like such a bummer. I swear "The Night Josh Tillman Came to Our Apartment" is about an ex of mine. "She said, like literally, music is the air she breathes..."
Other thoughts:
- Drake's album was originally a free release. He put it up on soundcloud for about a half hour, then took it down and put it on iTunes. Hence the name If You're Reading This It's Too Late. Drake contractually has to release four albums under Cash Money. By releasing this mixtape as an album he becomes a free agent later this year after when Views from the 6 comes out.
- BADBADNOTGOOD and Ghostface Killa put their album up for streaming last Friday. Here's the link.

Tomorrow is going to be a busy day for album releases, what with Dan Deacon, Diamond Rugs, Ghostface, King Khan, Pelican, and Screaming Females. I usually don't listen to an album till it's out on Spotify, so I have a lot of listening to do.

Sweet, completely overlooked Pelican has a new one coming out!

Hmmm, I only see an EP from Pelican being released (The Cliff). Am I missing an LP release from them, or is that all that's coming out?

No, it's just an EP. I still need to give it a listen.
This shit is so gnarly and badass, it makes this is month is easy. Seriously, if you even have a passing interest in rock music, this is a must listen. For those who don't know, Screaming Females are a small, 3 piece punk band that have been working the underground for years, except they have a secret weapon...A 4 foot nothing, female, axe shredder with vocals to match the guitar that's 5 sizes too big for her body. Anybody who has ran into this band on the live circuit has had their mind blown. But make no mistake, this is not punk music anymore. Now, with a cleaned up recorded sound, everybody gets to join in the fun. Rose Mountain is a shred fest with all hooks and bells and whistles to match. If they had the name recognition of Sleater-Skinney, everybody would hail Screaming Females' dominance.
Screaming Females - Rose Mountain
Don't call yourself a rock fan if you haven't listened to this at least a half dozen times, yet:
'Bout time people started getting aboard the Screamales bandwagon.
It's been pretty lonely up here the last five years.
I got on board when I saw them open for Titus Andronicus about 3 years ago. They blew Titus away and it wasn't even close.
Edit: I might as well share my story a little more...I went to day party and drank a keg with a bunch of high school and college friends. Left for the show and took enough of a crazy psychedelic drug to put many on their ass (which it did). During the dreadful come up, this fucking band comes on and all the uncomfortable weight of the transitioning world gets lifted and brings me to my feet. It was like a howl from the underworld that beckoned my rock n roll heart. I never did see her that night. She was too low to the ground and the crowd was too high, but I will never forget the images I had in my head of what a band that rocks this hard must look like. As you could imagine, I was even more blown away when some random dude came up and told me that the band on stage was a 3 piece with only a 1 chick frontwoman (screaming female not females). The night got crazier. Screaming Females shredded harder. Patrick from Titus got mouthy. Him, his band, me, the crowd, all exchanged and alternately tried to stop the trash talk. As foreshadowed, my friends eventually were put on their ass and kicked out. And it got weirder from there... Anyway, stumbling upon the Screaming Females that unforgettable night has been one of the most rewarding gifts in my music listening life.

What a fucking sell. I'll be sure to listen to that a few times before voting.

I remember once upon a time we talked about this before, but I saw a show on that same tour and agree 100% - with the first sentence. Diarrhea Planet / Screaming Females / Titus Andronicus / oh, what a night. It wasn't my favorite Titus Andronicus show that I've seen (that would be when they played with the So-So Glos in Asheville) but I get such a rush out of their shows, I'll see 'em any time they come to town. Love the shiz out of those guys. All that being said, the Screaming Females do put on a fantastic show as well.
1. Susanne Sundfør's "Ten Love Songs" 2. José González's "Vestiges & Claws"
I was all set to vote for Dan Deacon until I started listening to this. I am so glad there is an album out of left field, cause there has not been a whole lot for me to grasp onto this month. I like Dan Deacon, Screaming Females, Father John Misty, and Diamond Rugs, but I can't imagine any of the these would end up on my year end list. I'm going to listen to this a few more times, give Dan another few listens, and check out a few other albums I've been neglecting this month before I vote.
