The global record industry has decided that music should now be released on Fridays. The change will be implemented in the summer. Not relevant now but should change the voting deadlines later in the year.
So far it's a tie between Your Old Droog, BBNG & Ghostface, and Dan Deacon. I just listened to Rose Mountain for the first time and it rocks pretty well, but I'll have to listen to it a couple more times to see how it holds up with everything else. I'm listening to Ten Love Songs right now and Accelerate is gettin' me going. I almost definitely won't be making any sort of decision until Monday.
What is BS about next month is the Sufjan Stevens LP is going to be released on March 31st. I'm going to have to wait on voting till the last minute unless that album is released somewhere early.
FJM: If you're like me and have a tendency to blank out on the lyrics - you'd find this album boring. And then I actually read them, so it's still in contention.
The Districts: It's not bad, but I just haven't been feeling it for some reason. Normally shit like this is up my alley.
Heard once, will need to get back to: Dan Deacon, Ghostface w/ BBNG
This shit is so gnarly and badass, it makes this is month is easy. Seriously, if you even have a passing interest in rock music, this is a must listen. For those who don't know, Screaming Females are a small, 3 piece punk band that have been working the underground for years, except they have a secret weapon...A 4 foot nothing, female, axe shredder with vocals to match the guitar that's 5 sizes too big for her body. Anybody who has ran into this band on the live circuit has had their mind blown. But make no mistake, this is not punk music anymore. Now, with a cleaned up recorded sound, everybody gets to join in the fun. Rose Mountain is a shred fest with all hooks and bells and whistles to match. If they had the name recognition of Sleater-Skinney, everybody would hail Screaming Females' dominance.
Screaming Females - Rose Mountain
Don't call yourself a rock fan if you haven't listened to this at least a half dozen times, yet:
Hell yes, this is the album I've been waiting for all month. I haven't been sold on anything else I've heard.
FJM: If you're like me and have a tendency to blank out on the lyrics - you'd find this album boring. And then I actually read them, so it's still in contention
We get it, Father John. You're way cooler than us. And it's really annoying that you are so good at making a mockery of so many styles of music.
It's a weird month. Pitchfork had about as few 8.0+ albums as I can remember them having in a single month, but I feel like they are way off on most of them, and way off on a lot of their mid-6 and mid-7s.
I think I've got it down to three albums, but man, what a strange month.
