Public Service Broadcasting's (technically not released until 24 February) The Race For Space leaked a couple days ago. I really enjoy it as well as their The War Room ep from a few years ago. They take archival recordings and appropriate them into their sometimes rock/sometimes electronic stylings via sampling and the result is actually really interesting to listen to. Consider it added to my list of contenders.
I totally understand the love that FJM is getting. Lyrically, it's as strong as a record as you'll find from an artist of his popularity level and above. It's so personal and it definitely stands out in my eyes because of that. Musically, it's a complete work that has a consistent sound that's maybe not entirely unique but it's own. Really vibing "When You're Smiling And Astride Me" and "Strange Encounter", I think those are the two best tracks.
Not really the type of album that I'd consider in my 'wheelhouse' but I have a lot of admiration for him and this piece of work.
Really great month of music! I was torn between Pond and Bjork, but honestly, this was the one I enjoyed the most. It is just so much fun.
Pond - Man It Feels Like Space Again These guys are like Tame Impala's mischievous, borderline psychotic little brother. Wilder and more psychedelic, and I love it!
2. Bjork (Vulnicura) - A gorgeous blend of strings, electronics, and her angelic voice. 3. Joey Bada$$ (B4.Da.$$) - This album reminded me why NYC Hip-Hop consistently blows everything else in Hip-Hop out of the water, for me at least. 4. Aphex Twin (CCAI Pt2) - Anyone else think that he probably has a ton of award-winning, 5-star albums that he has either just erased or are stored on some forgotten hard-drive never to be released? The man is an absolute master. 5. Panda Bear (PBMTGR) - This one has a lot of room to grow. I've needed about 10-15 listens on all AnCo related releases before they really click.
HM: Sleater-Kinney, Percussions, Ty Segall: Live in San Francisco, and Viet Cong were all great as well.
Oh, and I agree with this post almost 100%. Pond is also my Jan. AOTM. Did not like the Viet Cong album, though, just too jarring for my ears for some reason (and I usually like that type of sound).
To anyone who is interested, one half of Junip (José González) had his first album since 2007 leak the other day and it's really fucking good. It's called Vestiges & Claws.
That said, Dan Deacon has gotten the most listens out of anything so far this month. Still just waiting for BADBADNOTGOOD and Ghostface to drop what I can only assume will be one of the best hip-hop albums of 2015.
Contending albums for me thus far, in no particular order: Dan Deacon's Gliss Riffer José González's Vestiges & Claws Public Service Broadcasting's The Race For Space Your Old Droog's Kinison ep
The Districts' new album is pretty solid. Maybe indie garage rock is an over saturated market these days but they're as good as any other band in that genre. The album won't factor into my AOTM nominations but it's an enjoyable listen and their Roo show this June should be fun. Very similar to The Orwells, if that's your sort of thang.
I feel kinda like I'm on an island here but while enjoy the new Father John Misty, I'm surprised by the level of praise it is getting. I'm a big fan of his and this new album is certainly a more complete album than Fear Fun is. The album is consistently good and very beautiful but I don't think it has very high peaks. I miss the energy and the swagger of songs like I'm Writing a Novel and Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings. It's certainly a contender for AotM for me, but I'm hopeful something else is more interesting.
I agree with you. FJM album is good, but I'm not blown away by it.
I am so glad I don't make a living off of reviewing albums, cause this one took a while. LOVE IT!!!!

I cannot wait for Ghost+BADBADNOTGOOD. But the preliminary reviews for it so make it seem like it's just okay...
Someone please give the internet Sour Soul. We all know it's out there. GIMME IT!
That's how I feel about Courtney Barnett. It drives me crazy when I know it's out there and people have heard it, but I haven't.
I didn't know that Courtney Barnett had leaked to some people. Anyone who gets first listens and has no potential threat to them by further releasing it to others are just greedy. My only confusion right now is that Sour Soul was actually released yesterday. Maybe since it's Tuesday, we'll get something.

I never have and never will trust anyone who gets paid to have their opinion disseminated. Even random reviewers still think that Simian Mobile Disco is bleep bloop garbage and that LCD Soundsystem just actively ripped off what Talking Heads did in the 70s and 80s. People like you and I will probably enjoy it regardless.
edit. First time quoting two posts at once. I'm growing up.
Drake getting BNM surprises me. The sound of that mixtape is good, but the lyrics are incredibly poor.
I'm probably a bigger Drake supporter than most, but that thing is garbage. Couple decent songs, but he is a pitchfork darling. I actually hate that Drake's album takes the attention away from Pops Staples new album review today.

This made me laugh because you either underestimate the popularity of José González or overestimate the popularity of Junip.

Honestly, I'm not really aware of the popularity of either José González or Junip as a whole. I know that I thoroughly enjoy both and that I've never heard anyone else in real life talk about them, but neither of those things mean shit.
