I don't even know why I said that. The only time I eat salami is on an italian B.M.T. at Subway. I guess they call it a BMT because saying Big Meat Trio sounds as gross as a Spice Girls concert.
lol ok. well thats like, your opinion man. im sorry it upsets you so much that you dont think my opinion is correct and yours is.
That's not what he's saying. You have an opinion and he has an opinion. He believes that yours is wrong just like you believe his is wrong. A simple disagreement . There's absolutely no real way to prove it in this instance.
Personally, I don't like Skrillex's stuff but I also don't like a lot of the type of music in the EDM scene. Just my personal tastes. Skrillex's look turned me off from wanting to learn more about him (that haircut boggles my mind). I'm glad he'll be pulling people away from other late night sets. I love late night tent shows anyway.
as you can see, your personal music tastes don't particular mash well as those who are fans of the one they call Skrillex... In this case, I must say we shall all go to the shows we are excited to see this year, and it will be freakin' awesome. I'll be at some of the sets you picked out, and I will be at other sets where you will not be present. But both of us are going to have a sweet ass time. I'm not a big fan of the Phish Fillet, and yet I do not start threads bashing them, because I understand people have their individual tastes.
Meta World Peace!
my question to you...would you feel the same if this was a Nickelback thread or Justin Beiber thread? And Im not trying to stir the pot it is a genuine question.
Well, no not at all. I would be right there with the majority of you ripping those bands and wishing they had chosen better shows for the late night lineup. However, comparing Skrillex with Nicelback and Justin Beiber is a little extreme. I say this for 2 reasons: 1.) bands like Nickelback and whatever it is you consider the little Beibmeister are shoved down your throat on a daily basis in the mainstream media... You can't flip through the radio dial once without hearing one of these two... Idk about you but we don't have any stations that play skrillex around MA... Also if you want to say Skrillex is mainstream because he won a Grammy or two this year you'd also have to say that about several of the other bands at 'roo. Skrillex is popular, he isn't mainstream... He isn't on TMZ and Access Hollywood every night or playing half time shows for the NFL.
Secondly, people on the thread have been saying the Skrillex crowd isn't fun or they cause problems (something like that, I can't find quotes right now)... Nickelback fanAnti-monkey butt powders are generally NASCAR loving, Jim bean sipping, a hootin' and a hollerin' bunch which I personally don't care for... And well as far as Beiber fans go... I'm 24 so I think walkin into one of those shows is borderline illegal in a most creeptastic fashion (giggiddy giggiddy alriggghhttt)... I have no use for a bunch of Tweens at a 4 day festival.
Maybe that's how you guys feel about skrillex fans in which case I guess I get where you're coming from... But comparing us to Nickelback and Beiber fans? Come on... In the height of the Cold War, Ronald Raegan sat down with his Russian counterpart and asked "if Martians came down from space and attacked... Would we still be enemies?" obviously the Russians said "No"... I think we can all agree that if 'Roo told us that Beiber or Nickelback were playing we would join up in arms against it!
I personally do not really like any dubstep band I have heard. One good thing about Skrillex though is that he is pushing EDM onto markets and audiences that are not as familiar with the genre.
I'm a big supporter of turkey salami. If Skrillex was to hand out some of that at his more-than-likely LN What set, I would possibly change my opinion of him, especially if he also handed out some buns and condiments.

ah see this is where I have an issue...I saw more tweens running around with Skrillex shirts at Disney then Id like to admit (its not for the sake of the thread Im saying this its a genuine observation) You cant say in one post "oh just let the people like who they like" then make a stereotype about Beiber fans or Nickelback fans. Its hypocritical. I dont listen to mainstream radio station however my XM has a few "mainstream" top 40 stations...they dont play Skrillex on the EDm channels (maybe youll catch a Skrillex remix of Nero or something of that sorts but they do play Skrillex on the mainstream station along with Avcii then follow it with katy Perry or Beiber)
The problem is Ive been in the EDM scene for a loooooong time...longer then Id like to admit. This isnt a pissing contest proclamation but another observation. Skrillex is to EDM what Beiber is to pop what Nickelback is to rock. Walking into a Skrillex show is just like walking into a Beiber show cept probably creepier because the tweens dont have any clothes on because thats how they view EDM as a chance to wear no clothes and dance. Its a "rave" after all to them. As much as noone wants to admit it, he's mainstream. Does that make him a terrible artist? Absolutely not. Shit how mainstream is Jay-z now? Definitely not a reflection of talent
If Skrillex wasnt around...neither would the little kids. . Im torn if I like the attention Skrillex has brought to the EDM community. I love the music so much Im happy to see it get the exposure it deserves but then again our EDM scene is so tight knit that I hate to see a bunch of 13-14 year olds there for the wrong reasons.
I would be right there with the majority of you ripping those bands and wishing they had chosen better shows for the late night lineup.
Im with the majority here wishing they had chosen BETTER shows and not wasted a large name DJ on Skrillex. Ive already expressed why I dislike him and none of those reasons have anything to do with popularity. Im a huge DMB fan, I deal with the stereotypes, I listen to everyone tell me how they have no talent. Dont get your panties in a bunch because the majority of the people here wanted a better/different dj. There are 100 djs that are a better live show then Skrillex. Skrillex was the "safe" choice for Roo....not sure how many times youve seen him but his live shows are horrible IMO. But again thats just my opinion and youre right my opinion isnt fact just opinion. Im happy for all the people that will enjoy the Skrillex show, I imagine that the majority of people here that are disappointed that Roo (who barely books high caliber EDM acts ever) would, what they would consider, waste their booking on Skrillex. Dubstep is the "cool" thing right now..90% of the people into Dubstep or Skrillex have no idea where it came from, how it evolved and can barely name any other genres of EDM let alone any more Dubstep DJs. How do I know this? I talk to these people every weekend at shows. As someone who has so much love for EDM its frustrating to me.

In my opinion, Skrillex is a weak choice for top DJ. I was personally sad Bonnaroo couldn't scrape together Justice or DJ Shadow but whatever. I am happy to see the festival branching out a little electronically. SBTRKT, Major Lazer(sorta), MiMosa and Flying Lotus all show diversity in the Bonnaroo EDM scene. But Skrillex is there to fall back on if the listener just wants to wobble the night away.
Would I be much happier with a different big name DJ in Skrillex's spot? almost definitely. But then I wouldn't get to see what's happening in the tents. And it looks like the late nights this year will be exceptional.
And it looks like the late nights this year will be exceptional.
I LIVE for the Late Nights at Bonnaroo. They are always exceptional.
Just to chime in about the Skrillex Which stage debate. I really don't get why he's even considered for a stage. I get it, he's big in dubstep, but it's only been two years for this guy. The Which Stage is saved for reputable long standing acts with a deep catalog (NIN, String Cheese, Flips, Lil Wayne). A couple EP's and one album doesn't cut it. Oakenfold and Tiesto were in tents and these guys have been in the game for decades. Hell, Tiesto DJ'dthe opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics four years before his Bonnaroo performace. I'd be shocked if Best New Artist winner Skrillex was the first DJ to make the stage. I see him in Bassnectar's spot from last year.
I'm hardly "quizzing every person who says they don't like Skrillex".
Not anymore because we try to avoid the subject but back in the other Skrillex involved threads, I remember you adamantly trying to insist that we didn't actually dislike Skrillex because of his music but because he was popular/he was dubstep/he was in From First to Last/his haircut/whatever, and that if he was some nobody that nobody had ever heard of, we would be all over his weenie.
I'll be honest. The main reason I dislike him is because of his haircut. That may be shallow or whatever, but I'm not going to lie about it. With that said, I have no problem with him getting the LN Which. If he pulls the crowd away from Battles or SBTRKT in the tent, that's fantastic. I've seen some good stuff at LN Which, but I'm not one of these people that props that spot up on a pedestal. Let him perform there. I'm fine with it.

I take your point about seniority, but understand that if he was placed in a tent, the crowd would be disastrous. After the Florence + Machine show in the tent last year, I know what it's like to not even be able to enjoy a tent show because of how massive the crowd is. I don't agree with the people wanting to see him, but placing him in a tent would ruin his show for tons of people that do want to see him.
Jury has shown the first actual valid argument for Skrill to not play a stage. I completely agree with your point about Tiesto and Oakenfold not even getting a stage, but I think what it comes down to is: EDM wasn't as big then as it is now. Not as "mainstream" as it is now, I meant. I think stage/tent placement will forevermore come down to how many people they expect to attend the show, unfortunately not based on the longevity/quality of their work. This is just something we'll have to come to terms with.
I'm pretty happy with Skrill, ML, FlyLo, SBTRKT, Mimosa, Big G.. but I am really craving something a little more electro/house-y. Fingers crossed. At least we don't have long to wait for adds.

Bassnectar was the highest artist on the lineup last year to play in a tent and he was at 14. Skrillex is at 9, although the top of the lineup is arguably much weaker than it was last year. However, I feel that when you get toward the top 10, that is where position on the lineup really starts to matter. I would think no one in the top 10 would be put in a tent. Anyone after 10 could potentially be put in a tent.
People say that Bassnectar was put in a tent so why can't Skrillex? I think Skrillex is way more popular than Bassnectar and even his tent was crowded last year. Skrillex in a tent would be a disaster. I heard Skrillex on a mainstream radio station the other day, I have never heard Bassnectar on any radio station. I think that speaks to Skrillex's mainstream appeal.
Also, I thought I should throw in my general opinion about Skrillex. EDM music is really starting to blossom right now, and I will say that I have only recently started to listen to the genre. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable regarding music in general, so I feel like I can recognize differences between music that would be considered "good" or "bad". I can see many of the reasons why people do not like Skrillex. The music is very simplistic, lacks depth, and is repetitive. Very similar to typical pop music on top 40 radio. I listen to Flying Lotus and I can hear how much more intricate his music is and the depth of his compositions.
My thought is that, because EDM music is new for me, maybe that is why I enjoy Skrillex? I mean, if I had never listened to music before, I imagine I would gravitate toward top 40 type stuff the first time I heard it. Maybe a year from now I will not enjoy Skrillex anymore? Who knows. But right now I enjoy what I hear and I think my friend and I will have a lot of fun at his show. That is all that really matters in the end.

I think the best argument for Skrillex not to get the which stage spot is Tiesto being in a tent. Tiesto, while I don't really care for him, is huuuuuuuuuuuge. He sold out the O2 arena in London 2 months after he played bonnaroo, and played the main stage at coachella. So why, if Tiesto got a tent at roo, would skrillex not get a tent? I don't think skrillex is as big as Tiesto was/is?
