I think the best argument for Skrillex not to get the which stage spot is Tiesto being in a tent. Tiesto, while I don't really care for him, is huuuuuuuuuuuge. He sold out the O2 arena in London 2 months after he played bonnaroo, and played the main stage at coachella. So why, if Tiesto got a tent at roo, would skrillex not get a tent? I don't think skrillex is as big as Tiesto was/is?
Someone just said this above, but i'll say it again...EDM is a whole new beast compared to what it was even a year or two ago. I went to my first 'Roo in 2010 and all my friends were raving about Deadmau5 and I had never even heard of him at the time or listened to that type of music. Now 12-year-olds are raging to Skrillex...and Deadmau5 inadvertently (I think) started making EDM more mainstream with his image. I personally think his music blows and he's only really popular at all because of his image.
Anyways, back on topic...Skrillex and dubstep in general is exponentially more relevant right now than Tiesto was a few years ago. Skrillex will be on the Which Stage, and i'll put $100 down on it.

Tiesto just played a 1000 capacity bar in Nashville, Bassnectar sold out our arena.
Oakenfold and Tiesto were in tents and these guys have been in the game for decades. Hell, Tiesto DJ'dthe opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics four years before his Bonnaroo performace. I'd be shocked if Best New Artist winner Skrillex was the first DJ to make the stage. I see him in Bassnectar's spot from last year.
Mr friend and I had this conversation. While I could see Skrillex on the What Stage given his immediate popularity, the fact that they were putting EDM legends in tents says a lot. However, how many kids who dig this flavor of the week really understand the high status of Oakenfold and Tiesto? I don't know the answer to this question, but it will probably factor in to whether or not Skrillex gets a stage or a tent.

They don't schedule artists based on their past work/longevity. They schedule artists based on the crowds they draw. Skrillex will draw a huge crowd, and he'll be on the Which Stage.
Like others have said, EDM is bigger now in America than it has ever been. Skrillex is at the forefront of this resurgence. Comparing him to Tiesto or Deadmau5 or Oakenfold in past years just doesn't apply.
Especially considering the rest of the lineup and the fact that Skrillex is the only "mainstream" EDM act this year, to put him anywhere but on the Which would be one of the biggest clusterfucks in Bonnaroo history.
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.

Coming from a non EDM fan I can say Skrillex is huge just because of how much I know about him and can recognize him. I couldn't pick Tiesto out of a lineup (even though I know he's a huge name) but I definitely can tell you a few things about Skrillex based on things i've read in magazines or seen on the websites I visit.
He has a lot more buzz in the mainstream music scene than most other EDM acts in recent years. Part of it is because he's newer/rising up as opposed to guys like Tiesto and others who have been big for a while.
It's just buzz. The key will be seeing what Skrillex is up to in two years. I remember when it felt like MGMT were going to be the biggest band in the world for a while because of all their buzz and now they're not really a big deal.
I remember when it felt like MGMT were going to be the biggest band in the world for a while because of all their buzz and now they're not really a big deal.
Why does everyone always have to bring up my beloved MGMT in reference to things that "were big"? Is it not possible for them to have another hit? And as for the biggest band in the world thing, only time (10-20-30 years) can tell something like that! (I'm sure you know that though, ITM, i'm just sayin.)
(P.S., About MGMT not being a really big deal at the mo': last album didn't really have a "radio-worthy" hit capable of topping any charts but that ALBUM as a whole is unbelievable. "Extra-secondary-source-recent-info" I found online:
-Ben and Andrew are working on the next album. Believe me they really are.
-Will has been working with his other band Ill Fits and doing some DJing.
-James is also keeping busy having recently done something with Apple Venus and helping Richie James Follin (the brother of Madeline Follin from the band Cults) with some music for his band Guards. -Matt was playing in Eleanor Friedberger’s band for a mini tour out west. )

sorry about the MGMT rant. carry on.
I simply used MGMT because I felt it was a reference most people would know/get. I could have used a lot of different bands that have had HUGE buzz for a year or two and then became kinda normal. I didn't say they are bad or got worse. Just that they simply don't have as much buzz and seem like a hot topic much anymore.
I like MGMT a lot and their two albums have good stuff. But I do remember feeling like they were the biggest thing going on for a bit and now they are a bit more obscure and there aren't nearly as many interviews or magazine articles about them. You don't see people dying to get them added to festival lineups like the first year that they were touring.
I could have used Vampire Weekend or Fleet Foxes or a variety of other acts that all had a ton of buzz for a year or so and later on don't seem like that big of a deal (even if they're continuing to make awesome music).
MGMT, Vampire Weekend, and Fleet Foxes are all big. They just haven't been that active lately. You would have said the same thing about The Shins or someone like that a year or two ago yet here they are sitting there at number 7 on the lineup.
-When I Hear My Name -Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground -Blue Orchid -Passive Manipulation -Red Rain -Death Letter -My Doorbell -Hotel Yorba -Same Boy You've Always Known -Lovesick -Little Ghost -We're Going to Be Friends -The Hardest Button to Button -Black Math -The Nurse -I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself
Encore: -Ball and Biscuit -Seven Nation Army -Screwdriver
They don't schedule artists based on their past work/longevity.
Double edged sword here. How can you say that when you look at many years of headliners at Roo. Sure its sales but they seem to book more on past work than newer popular stuff.

They're still headliners because they're hugely popular, no matter how long they've been around. Arcade Fire played the same slot as Metallica and Tom Petty.

I must be out of touch. I had no idea Bassnectar was that huge. And, no, I didn't pay attention to the Bonnaroo show last year.
To be correct, Bassnectar only sold out the lower level of that arena, AND it was a NYE show so it was a little different. Bassnectar played that same 1000 capacity venue Tiesto did a year ago.

But they also sold it out and had to move it outside if you are talkin about limelight more like 2 years ago
oh, i assumed tiesto was outside also. i was at the bassnectar limelight show, but not tiesto. and it was the show that was the night before the horrible flooding started.

I'm nearly certain there were people so far back at the bassnectar show last year they couldn't see or probably her him(too well at least). I could see Loren on a ln which set. But back to skrillex, it may be "lowest common denominator" but when you think about it most of the really fun things are simple. I'm not saying anything bad about SBTRKT or mimosa or any of the other edm acts but I see them as going to a museum, it's fun, but wouldn't you rather be upside down on roller coasters at cedar point. It's something simple and fun. But that's just me.
the 0:30 and 2:30 marks give you a good glimpse at how unbelievably massive the crowd at bassnectar was last year! luckily i left Arcade Fire early and got a spot on the rail, I had no idea 20,000 people were raging behind me.

I recognize he has massive buzz. Im not gonna argue he is one of the most popular DJs in America right now. But Bonnaroo is a top festival, you need a deeper body of work to warrant the set lengths and the top billings at the stages. I've always felt Coachella goes for more of the buzz acts, while Bonnaroo went for deeper veteran acts. That's how it has been. But hey, i've seen enough responses that could warrant a stage for Darlene Connor. Either way it's no sweat off my back. I'll check out the other acts and maybe sit in for a few songs.
If Skrillex isn't playing Which Stage LN? Than who is?
I just don't see him anywhere else or anyone in that spot besides him.
This stumped me too. It's already established The Roots will likely have one of the Which slots. For the other LN Which spot, I don't see many options. There is the two Superjam groups (The Word and Spectrum Road) but I don't think they have quite the following to make it. Ludacris, maybe, but a downslump in his career and two hip-hop acts on the Which goes against him. Maybe Phish will do a second show like they did in '09.
Personally, I'm praying we get a Jack White addition. He's been to Roo as part of the White Stripes, The Raconteurs, and the Dead Weather. I want it to happen, it should happen.

That is alot of people. Goddamn I didn't think there was that many people there when I showed up. I spent most of that time at Big Boi's set at Other Tent.
I havent seen Skrillex since 2010 so idk what he uses for a stage setup. If you would move that bassnectar setup to a stage instead of a tent it would lose some of the stage effect. Those rotating lasers now have nothing to bounce off of. If hes still using that large screen platform then I guess that would translate ok but I think it loses some appeal being on a stage.

I should have clarified that my post was mostly in response to the people comparing him to other big name EDM acts. It wasn't so much about him getting the Which stage spot over other acts but more about my experiences. Like I know of Tiesto and Deadmau5 and other similar acts but I feel like I have never seen the amount of media coverage or mainstream awareness for those other acts.

WTF!!!
I was at Big Boi and had no clue all of that was going on right behind me. That is unbelievable, and makes me feel old.

Deadmau5 sorta had some awareness. He didn't really blow up arena size until '11. As far as Tiesto goes, yeah he was huuugge. I'm not a big fan of Tiesto but a fan of EDM. And his Elements of Life World Tour was ridiculously successful, even in the states and the album is considered an all time great in trance/house. So when he was put up, I believe Friday LN closing tent. I was surprised. When I stopped over there during MMJ's intermission, the crowd was definitely beyond the tent.
