i'm definitely let down by the production of the album. I hate the vocal production especially. Way too many effects on his voice for my tastes. The grit and grind of his voice was what made it so amazing.
The layering/musicianship is a step up so that is good. The songs haven't reached out and grabbed me after one listen through, but I expect that to change. I do think that a lot of these songs will improve with live performances.

I'm thinking the quality of the stream isn't that great. I'm going to wait to hear it on good headphones/speakers when the actual album is out. I didn't notice too many effects on his voice on the first half of the album (listening to the rest now). Which songs in particular did his voice sound like it had effects?
Sometimes it takes a little while. I didn't care much for the new Cold War Kids album when I first listened to it a few times. After a few weeks went by I put it on again and dug it a lot more.

i was disappointed in history from below as well. then a handful of songs really grew on me, especially after seeing them live.
i hope this is the same scenario.
most of these songs just arent as good as the earlier stuff, imo. theres a couple i like and can see being awesome though. but as a whole, its going to need some work on me.

To be honest I can't compare these songs to their earlier work because I haven't analyzed the lyrics yet. I feel like once I sit down and just listen to the album while reading lyrics, getting a feel for what a song is really about, then I start to appreciate it more. I don't know what most of these are about yet.
History Down Below is a favorite of mine but I had heard some of the songs live before the album came out....so I had some new favorites that I was waiting to hear the studio version of. Made me like it more I think.
There is just a completely different vibe on most of his vocals from previous records. Plenty of reverb that he hadn't used before. It is really obvious on Otherside at the beginning of the chorus. I don't think it is something that is going to completely turn me off, just caught me a little off guard.
On the second listen through, I'm enjoying it a lot more. For the record, I absolutely loved History From Below, almost as much as the Ode to Sunshine. The songwriting was right down my alley on that album.

This exactly. I'm a lyrics man, so I can't make any definitive statements on the songwriting until I sit down with the lyrics in front of me.

The quality of this stream sounds a hell of alot better than the leaked version I have, in my opinion. I already enjoy the album alot more since I've heard the stream vs. leak. I've had this album for about a week and a half and part of my brain told me I didn't really like it, yet I still found myself listening to it constantly. It has really grown on me personally, and I'm sure after hearing it live, it'll become an album I enjoy that much more. My opinion only

I preordered the new album from their site on vinyl. I got the big package that comes with a key from the piano they used signed by the band....only 88 being sold. I had a bit of money and love limited items so why the hell not.

Otherside is definitly my favorite on first listen! Thanks for the link! Loved them in 2009, such an incredible show and the vibe was amazing, with the lightning and storm raging while we were raging! A show not to be missed this year!

I discovered them after Spotify'ing the lineup. It's too bad they are playing on Sunday because that day is already so jam packed full of stuff I want to see. I probably won't get to see them because the conflicts will be heavy that day judging from the Manders thread.
