Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
I think what people are responding to so positively, even in excess, is the energy they bring to the stage. No doubt they would (will?) kill it at Bonnaroo. But haters are gonna hate, and fanboys are going to label them hip-hop's messiah.

Ive probably watched the Fallon performance about 20 times already. This would be the greatest late add ever, hopefully last night caught Ashley Capps's eye.

Same here! One can only hope... Ironically, I discovered Tyler's "Bastard" album on some blog earlier today and was blow away, only to discover they had played Fallon last night (insane performance) and had played U Street in DC on the 14th (fuuuuuuuuuccccckk, missed 'em)! Dunno how soon they'll come around these parts again, but a Bonnaroo add would be the bomb
I just hope to [insert deity] that Earl makes it if Wolf Gang is booked...he won't be at Coachella, as he is at some boarding school in Utah or summat. sucks, but lol
I love Odd Future, but I feel like this performance is getting hyped up a little too much. On a hip-hop board I post on, people are already anointing these guys the second coming of The Wu circa 1993, comparing them to early Public Enemy, Onyx, etc. I hope the hype doesn't overtake the substance. Hell, I saw one dude talking about how he felt like this was his Nirvana.
And I think you may be downplaying it a bit too much. This type of charisma only hits hip-hop every so often. That's on top of the fact they research and write, something most emcees don't do these days - including your boy Wayne.

Wayne writes - his lyrics are his own, no ghostwriters there. And I dunno about research - I don't picture Weezy head down in the New Orleans Public Library taking notes, but yeah.
Even statements like that "this type of charisma only hits hip-hop every so often." Not really - every couple years there's somebody new who get HUGE buzz based off of early work/demos/live shows, and people start getting convinced they're going to change the game.
I read this on another forum, and I'm reposting it here because I think it brings up a good point for discussion:
America loves homophobic misogynistic make-believe-violent black kids acting foolish and standing for nothing except chaos.
I dig their spirit and energy, but it's empty, there's no real substance to their lyrics/music. I don't mean to impose mature standards on a bunch of teenagers, but it's pretty obvious they're going to be iconic(sooner rather than later) and that means they'll be emulated...is that a good thing? Maybe they'll mature and spit something real. Maybe their rebellious, angst-ridden, attention-begging style is just so universal that everyone will glaze over the lyrics and declare them worthy of praise. I can't even say I hate it, but something about it gives me pause.
"Every so often" can't mean the "every couple years" that you stated? I'm beginning to this you try hard to dissect my words to find a way do disagree. I didn't say once in a generation, I didn't even say once a decade or so. I said every so often that COULD mean once a year, once every few years, or yes once a decade. There's no consistency to it. But if you want me to get technical, I haven't been this energetic about a newer hip-hop act in a year or two. Even Das Racist and Freddie Gibbs didn't get me this amped, though it wasn't too far off.
And whoever wrote that quote you posted (I truly hope it wasn't you trying to pawn it off as someone else's to avoid heat, since you didn't quote it or link it) truly hasn't listened to OFWGKTA releases, specifically Tyler's. He is just hearing the in-your-face surface lyrics and hasn't taken the time to break it down, which is unfortunate and is what a lot of naysayers will do as OF gains more exposure.
Will they gain "national exposure"? Maybe not, due to their content. But if they do, why does it matter who emulates them? Why do we have to go through this with every non-conventional artist or even athlete.
Bottom line, OFWGKTA has my attention. I hope it has yours too.

Eh, the term "only every so often" makes it sounds like you're calling it rare. If you weren't, than apologies. I guess it's more that the reaction I'm seeing to Odd Future reminds me of how cats reacted to Jay Electronica two years ago, or the Cool Kids two years before that, or whatever. It's that "this is gonna change the game" sh*t. I don't know if I can make any clearer that I really, really like these dudes, I'm just wary of anything that starts gathering this level of hype.
Nah, that post wasn't me. It was from a thread on the boards over on Okayplayer.com about OFWGKTA's appearance on Fallon. I could link to it, but I'm lazy, and the discussion is about 1000 posts deep now, with varying levels of discourse. I just thought it was an interesting point of view. Sparked a heated debate over there.
I will say though, that the more I'm told how intelligent/deep/whatever somebody's lyrics are, the less likely I am to believe it. I feel like when people start trumpeting that about any artist, that artist is usually on some smart-dumb sh*t. Not saying that's the case here, just how it comes off sounding to me.
Bottom line, OFWGKTA has my attention. I hope it has yours too.
Oh, they do. And I like the whole collective - Earl gets my nod as favorite, but I like what I've heard outta Tyler too. I just greet anything covered in this much hype with a due amount of skepticism.
You seem to go off a lot of preconceived notions and lessons form past behaviors. When someone tells me an act's lyrics are deep, I actually go listen for myself to determine it. I don't care about track record from other artists. Yes, there are a lot of psuedo-intellectual emcees in the game today, but Tyler and Earl aren't a part of that list. It's just so easy to find gems in Tyler's Bastard album.
And Okayplayer? I didn't realize they were still relevant. I stopped posting there in '03 or '04 when every thread was filled with dickriding and other garb.
Why are you wasting brain cells arguing with this kid? Stop feeding the troll. He clearly does not get it and thats that. He has no opinion that is original and all he has done is copy/paste stuff that was said in other forums. I suggest you click on the yellow emoticon below his avatar, it wipes out everything he has posted. Cool feature I discovered today.
Anyways lets get this thread back on track. BRING GOLF WANG TO BONNAROO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Because I try to give hip-hop fans a voice, no matter what garb acts they may listen to. Bonnaroo has expanded to hip-hop and I want to help promote it with the minimal influence I have posting at this forum. If I can get him to listen to just one extra OFWGKTA track today that he wasn't planning on, I've succeeded. Same goes for the hip-hop acts that I respect that are playing at Bonnaroo this year.
these guys are younger than 21, and people want them to wax philosophical instead of, y'know, being teenagers and being angsty and violent? c'mon. if someone takes their rhymes to heart and becomes violent, i don't think that's anyone's fault but their own (that being the individual, not Odd Future).
If they are at Bonnaroo, maybe Tyler and Weezy can team up and bring the Wiz hate full force.
I also agree that they are eerily similar to Wu-Tang right now, with the collective mindset and a good mind for advertising their brand and music in the digital age. Lil' B is the same. I haven't been this excited about hip-hop in a long while. If we could get Lil' B, OFWGKTA and Salem on the farm... fuck, I might explode.

First, I have said MULTIPLE TIMES that I REALLY REALLY LIKE ODD FUTURE. I don't know how much more I can make that clear, I really don't. Everytime they drop something new, I grab it. The Fallon performance was legit. I enjoy the hell out of this crew. I've made that VERY clear in this thread.
Second, if you bothered to actually read what I said (also, lolz at "he just copies posts from other forums" bit), I posted that bit because I thought it made for an interesting discussion. I really don't understand why liking an artist means you can't discuss them at all. I was wondering if the hype was getting too big, and mentioned how that amount of hype usually turns me off. Wanting to discuss sh*t like that doesn't mean I don't "get it," it just means I'm interested in having a discussion that goes beyond ZOMG THIS IZ THA GREATEST THING EVAR!!!1
If I can get him to listen to just one extra OFWGKTA track today that he wasn't planning on, I've succeeded.
You mean, one extra besides watching that Fallon performance another 10 times, or listening to Earl as I was working this afternoon? I must have mentioned a dozen times in this thread that I actually like these guys a lot, I don't know why this is going over everybody's head.
Honestly, I'd like to give you the benefit of the doubt but for some posters, including myself to a degree, they aren't sold on your words. I'll give you a for instance, nearly every time you "sing the praises" of OFWGKTA you follow it up with an underhanded comment to subdue the excitement. This would be absolutely fine to do IF you didn't act like a Lil Wayne fan boy at various times on this forum. You lose a little credibility when you tell us to calm down on OF but pump up a garb act like Weezy as the second coming of Rakim. It just is a bad look.
With that said, I do trust that you appreciate OFWGKTA. I just think that you're downplaying their overall attraction to many.

Legit, I'm not going to sit here and try to convince people of how big a head I am. And as far as OF, I've never said anything negative about them, or the music, just the hype. Seriously.
I pretty much tend to dissect any music I like, especially music I really like. To me that's half the fun of music, is the debate.
So explain why you think the hype is too much? You like them but it's clear you don't love them. Where do they miss? I think the hype has been appropriate considering what I've seen over the past year from them.

Maybe it's me - I think they're good in general, and transcendent in spots. I don't know. I don't get the feeling watching them or listening to them that it's anything game changing. They're a bunch of young kids with energy to spare, and they remind me in different spots of early Wu-Tang, Onyx, the Def Jux roster, early Rhymesayers...maybe that's it. They're great at what they do, but I feel like it's nothing wholly original. That might be more a function of our times than anything else (I mean, what hasn't been done yet?) where I'm not surprised by anything, but I think that's it.
I guess my reaction is that I feel like people, especially those who are just hearing them/seeing them for the first time since the Fallon performance, are acting like they just served up something game changing and completely brand new. I don't see that - if anything, they're a phenomenal distillation of the past 20 years of hip-hop, and I mean that in the best possible way.
When I've seen various blogs/articles/message boards start comparing these guys to Public Enemy, the Sex Pistols, Nirvana...I think that's taking it a little far. They might wind up in that kind of discussion, I don't know. I mean hell, the fact that this discussion even needs to be had might be proof that they are important.
Like I said, it's less the band than it is the degree to which people are quick to toss out hyperbole these days. The Cool Kids release their first album, and it's the biggest movement in hip hop since Run DMC. Jay Electronica releases a handful of hot songs, and suddenly he's the best MC since early Nas.
If people were just saying "hey, these guys are great, check them out," it'd be one thing, but it's "this is the dawn of a new era in hip-hop" talk that has me cocking an eye. Let's give it a minute, appreciate it for being good/great/awesome, then start trying to place it in historical context.
Those acts you mentioned I'm sure has influenced Tyler and his collective a great deal. That's hip-hop. Hell, that's all genres. You're not going to get a completely unique sound at this point in hip-hop history. Even during the Anticon movement a decade ago, as unique as the sound was, it still had similarities to other acts that had come before them. But even if you draw similarities from OF to other acts, they are still bringing their own unique perspective to the table. Not just in overall style, but also in their energy and the way they "market" themselves with their videos and communications with their fans.
And you bring up how hyped Jay Electronica got when he started gaining real exposure. Where has he fell off? In my opinion, he certainly hasn't though I do feel he needs to release a formal album. But if he doesn't, so what - he's still worth all the hype. Plus I don't remember any rational people calling him the second coming of Nas, just like no rational people are calling OF the second coming of Wu. In both cases, people are talking about them carrying those respective torches and doing it in their own way, blazing their own paths.
I wasn't sure how i felt about these guys (just got into them from reading these boards). Real sick beats, real hard, but i dono if they really fit the roo crowd/atmosphere. After seeing that Jimmy Fallon show, they would be AWESOME. get the roots to back them and you've got one of the most memorable roo shows ever.
I heard the songs first and kinda thought they were just some angry kids, but after seeing pictures and the fallon show i realized they're just having fun and dont give a shit. So refreshing after the non stop "Im the greatest" rap thats been coming out.

Do people really think these guys are the next greatest thing and they aren't even teenagers yet? We all know what happens when kids go through puberty. These guys might not be into music by the time they turn 18. I agree with Juggs, while a great performance and interesting at that, the hype needs to die a little bit. And I thought the Pearl Jam @ Broo was the greatest concert experience in my lifetime, but that doesn't mean I go and buy a bunch of Pearl Jam albums either, or start promoting them as the best band on Earth (they're not, but up there).
Regarding OF, it's one performance, that's all, but a great one at that.
Edit: Just realized that they are teenagers, nevermind...kills my argument. I thought I read somewhere that they were preteens.

Yeah, I think I do know that they are black. I think it's obvious. Thanks for asking, though. Notice you have my quote on the bottom there. You sure you want to keep that quote after the way you are hounding me?

How was it obvious? Based on seeing their videos or you made that determination by hearing them?
