The thing that gets me so worked up is when you see legitimate threads get hijacked because people are trying to be funny. It's never funny for the one being bullied.....
Someone said something earlier about the "pack" mentality.
Just the other day I saw a thread where a noob was getting harrassed by some of the regulars. Another noob, with like 6 posts and one week on here joined right in and started bashing as well.
I thought, is this that person attempt to avoid being bashed themselves? I mean come on, 6 posts and registered less than a week, and alredy following suit. That's sad!!!
Valid points. I tend to try and help as much as I can but I do take note of the poster creating the thread. If they keep posting incoherent threads or duplicates or something then it can become annoying and I lose patience. There are some threads the warrant humorous criticism (like the dude that started a trip hop thread, then started a new one the next day.....come on dude).
But I do understand what you mean. I think one of the causes of it is that it's become fun to fill up an "IBTL" thread with humorous photos or jokes. A lot of people join in. It's fun because it ends soon since the thread will be closed anyway.
I think that that type of posting has taken over some other threads that may actually be legitimate help/question posts that will not need to be closed. Someone sees one person make a joke and then it's like free reign for silly nonsense.

Only about 50% applicable, but I love this (TRUE) story:
Inside a cage, a scientist hung a banana on a string and placed a set of stairs under it. Then he put 5 monkeys in the cage. Before long, one of the monkeys goes to the stairs and start to climb towards the banana. As soon as he touches the stairs, the scientist sprays all of the other monkeys with cold water.
After a while, another monkey makes an attempt with the same result. When the third monkey approaches the stairs, the other monkeys all beat the monkey snot out of him.
Now, the scientist puts the the cold water away and removes one monkey from the cage and replaces it with a new one. The new monkey sees the banana and wants to climb the stairs. To his surprise and horror, all of the other monkeys attack him.
After another attempt and attack, he knows that if he tries to climb the stairs, he will be assaulted. Next, the scientist removes another one of the original five monkeys and replaces it with a new one. The newcomer goes to the stairs and is attacked. The previous newcomer takes part in the punishment with enthusiasm! The scientist continues this cycle until all 5 original monkeys are replaced.
Every time the newest monkey takes to the stairs, he is attacked. None the monkeys that are beating him have any idea why they were not permitted to climb the stairs or why they are participating in the beating of the newest monkey. None of the remaining monkeys have ever been sprayed with cold water. Nevertheless, no monkey ever again approaches the stairs to try for the banana. Why not? Because as far as they know that's the way it's always been done around here.

It happens to me all the time. All the regulars team up and talk crap about me and my musical taste. It is the pack mentality. Ive said it myself, i dont see the point of filling a thread with useless info, just for the sake of bullying someone. Its not fun for the person being bullied. Even if it doesnt make me mad, i just dont want to hear it. Im on here for roo information and roo talk. Im not on here to be mocked and harassed. And i nicely ask them to leave me alone, and they continue to harass me, Just because its fun for them. They have no consideration for anyone but themselves. Its not a big deal, this is just the internet. But its just as easy to be friendly as it is to be rude.
And i can list some names. Im not saying theyre the whole problem, but a few individuals have given me way more trouble than anyone else. I would like to see some mods and more experienced members help us newbie out. Ive seen some newbies try to make a stand, and it ends up with them getting even more crap from the "pack." No newbie stands a chance against 5 experienced members. I wish you other veterans and mods would make a stand with us newbies, because the "pack" is going to respect yall a lot more.

You're taking it too personally. Most of the arguing with you was done because of your thread "top 10 best jam bands" and that's a topic that ALWAYS brings up big arguments, debates, and judging of people's musical tastes because it's so hard to define a jam band (NO - Let's NOT start that discussion here).
That said......I've never really criticized people for what they like to listen to except in extreme cases where I literally can't stand the music (Miley Cyrus, Jonas Brothers, etc.) and most of the time I'll be of the opinion "I'm not a big fan" or "they don't do it for me".
To me most bands that are big enough for us to discuss are great at what they do.....but it's a matter of taste.
Bonnapoo - don't think people are just attacking you. I can say that personally, for a while before I even started paying attention to who is posting, I would just respond to the messages and not even look at who I'm responding to.

Im not talking about just that one post. And you arent one of the individuals im speaking of. Youre understandable from what i recall. Some people just go too far. The fact that you admit its just a matter of taste shows me that youre understandable. Im a nice and respectful guy, but i dont take too kindly to people who have complete disregard for others opinions. Those people try to force their opinions on others

I know you're not talking about that one post. That's why I said "most" and not "all".
Thats all it takes man, if you can give someone respect and understand what theyre saying, we would have no problems. Some people have a hard time with that.

That's why we have an ignore button.
There are plenty of people who I've found to be annoying and some who I felt would jump on certain posts and be overly negative. Just put them on ignore and move on with your life
Socrates once said, "I am the smartest man alive, for i know one thing, that is, I know nothing." Thats some wisdom right there. There are so many minds at work here, when you just listen to yourself, youre only getting one of the many perspectives. When you listen to other people, you get a chance see things from a different perspective. You cant be so biased to your own opinion. People just want to believe whatever agrees with them. And lots of people dont realize that, so they go on thinking they have the answers. And that causes them to lose respect for what other people say. Especially if its a noob, theyre damn sure not going to respect them.

I did not know we had an ignore button. Thank you for telling me haha
I'm actually very helpful around here. People just think i'm a dickk cuz I hate duplicate threads.
I hear ya. You cant blame a newbie for wanting to get some action though haha. I think a lot of the time those newbies just get excited, and they dont even think to look around. They just get straight to business a make that post that their heart desires

I lurked around most of last year before finally joining up when I got my ticket... I just wanted to say thanks to all the helpful folks on here who've answered many a question of mine (either via old threads or because I asked). I think this is a really interesting board and intensely helpful; I've also been impressed by the charity and thoughtfulness of most posters. Maybe the other boards I hang out on are terrible, but I think this one is pretty great.
Also, having modded some boards, I don't know how the mod team keeps up with something this big. Kudos to you guys.
I'm actually very helpful around here. People just think i'm a dickk cuz I hate duplicate threads.
Nah, I think everyone hates duplicates, you just lash out more.
For what its worth, I think it would be a good idea to have a FAQ section, and to move all the useful threats there.
Did you say For what its worth??? I think we'll all be finding out what Its worth at the farm, when we see BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD! I think its time we stop children, whats that sound? Everybody look whats goin down
Noob: Answer this noob question I have! Jerk Vet: *Ignore post* *don't waste hate* Semi-nice Vet: Look down 3 posts. Very nice Vet: *go 3 posts down* *copy/paste*
The problem is there aren't as many semi-nice or very nice vets posting regularly anymore lol.
Really? Wonder why? Maybe because some of us "regulars" who are around in the "off-season" and do try to help re-direct to other posts that answer questions ended up getting fussed at and called out every time they did it - result of that was - those "regulars" pretty much quit posting and just glance through Inforoo here and there.
as one of the "old timers" on here I think a lot of the bashing starts because folks do get tired of seeing the same questions asked over and over again..
it is hard to find some of the answers to question because there are so many pages of info to dig thru..also we do have some people that just like to be negative as hell all the time...
I've been trying to get some old threads up to get folks laughing at the silly side.. don't let people run you away...we do like the newbs..with out them this board would probably not have as many wonderful people as it does... and yes some people have left...they tend to do that...people and life change all the time...
thats about all I can say on this matter...hope to see y'all there
Remeber it's just a message board and things will get said that will piss people off... don't let it get to you or run you off...
and remember to vote for Boz for president in 2012 cause he can't quack Leno up worse than it aready is...
Boz, Always the politician
^^Boz/Troo - 2012 - it can't get any worse and can only get better with these two in charge!
I don't post much ,but this board has helped me a lot too in the past 2 years at roo. I hate the way people act on the internet. Bonnaroo is a good escape from there, there aren't any trolls there. I dont even see the excuse of being fed up because of repeatedly asked questions. just answer them again? help someone out who isn't as board-savvy as your might be. seriously.
the internet, jesus christ. it could have been so nice :[...

Ive just lost patience with people who signed up recently and dont take the time to look around for the answers to their questions or more annoyingly to find the thread about the band they want to see. Its really not that hard to refrain from posting until youve made some effort to find some discussion on whatever subject youre looking for. This board has been around for a long time and there is so much information about the festival logistics, what to bring, etc etc. that if you just read for 15 minutes people can avoid making a useless thread asking questions that have been answered 1 million times over and are probably even stickied right at the top of board. The problem is people dont want to read, they want to say "Answer this question I have" and expect someone to do all the work for them. I dont really look outside the TML too often anymore so I dont even really notice the new people asking questions like what they should bring, but when someone makes a "Why doesnt Bonnaroo have more Trip Hop? i like trip hop" thread and then the next day makes the same thread because he somehow forgot he made one and couldnt find it, then he deserves to be made fun of a bit. Its aggravating to have a stupid thread like that, but then to have two of them is inexplicable. It really boils down to a lack of respect of the people who have taken the time over the years provide helpful information here by people who dont want to spend the time looking for the information and reading it.

There are hundreds of posts, some with hundreds of pages. It's not that easy for a noob. I found my way around the site fairly well, so it wasn't an issue for me personally, but I can see where some noobs are coming from. I also came to inforoo already being a veteran of the Roo experience, so I wasn't looking for many answers. I don't mind answering a question, because this site, while great, is sometimes overwhelming (and finding a single answer in so many posts isn't easy).
