I just cracked out the "Desitively Bonnaroo" album and tossed it on the ol' turntable last night. What a positudely funky record.
However, on previous listenings, I had never noticed how prominent the background vocals were. There is some phenomenal female singing on this record, so I'm wondering -- think we'll get more than just Dr. John and the Meters on stage? Obviously Art Neville is more than capable of handling some of the background vocals, but I can't imagine a song like "(Everybody Wanna Get Rich) Rite Away" having quite the same impact without some funky chicks wailin' on the chorus.

Dr John vs MMJ would be the hardest decision i would have to make, especially if its the superjam. if its the album show, i would see MMJ and then see Dr John the other time he plays

It would be a tough decision for me. I'm a bigger MMJ fan and have been waiting for their return to Roo but Jess has a point about the Meters and this is a once in a lifetime show.

i had a ticket to go see MMJ with Petty this summer but i couldnt go, and that was the only chance ive had to see them since 08. it would be hard to skip either Dr. John show but MMJ the one band that would be able to pull me away, and only because i know there will be another Dr. John show to see. What are the chances of the Meters being at both shows?

If it happens like this it will be the toughest overlap in sets I have personally experienced in my 4 Roos. I have kicked myself for 3 years for missing MMJ in 08 and swore I would never make that mistake again, but Dr. John AND The Meters AND a Dr. John Superjam? Idk if I have the mental capacity to handle the consequences of this decision

I'm in love with "Desitively Bonnaroo" so that makes the choice even harder.
I think it makes too much sense to have these conflict because it will surely split the crowds. Plus there's a few other choices for late night that will help divide the masses.
I was one of the twelve people who chose the George Porter funk-jam over MMJ in '08. I had the best night of my life, but still wished I could have seen MMJ. However, I've seen MMJ seven times since then and like others have said, the Meters haven't even played once in the last decade. Gotta go with the funk.
If you're dying to h ear the album then you've got to hit that show. The Superjam could be absolutely anything musically. I think of the last one in 08 with Gogol Bordello, Hammett and Claypool playing all Tom Waits tunes. You never know what Dr. John and Auerbach have in mind musically. It's an easy call for me unless they're up against SCI, then I'm stuck.
BTW, any chance of MMJ closing the fest and WSP playing late night? That would make things easier.

I have all my fingers and toes crossed to see Mavis Staples up there singing.
I just downloaded some of Dr. John, checking it out for the first time and all I have to say is wow. This guy is legit. I love his voice. "Trippin Live" is an excellent album.
Just wanted to say congrats Dr.John for being inducted in the rock and roll hall of fame. The superjam with Dan is among my must sees this year. Can't wait to hear everything from rock, funk, blues, to jazz. This ought to be good.
I would definitely take Dr. John over MMJ. Especially considering Allen Toussaint is going to be joining him. Damn! Thats going to be a set right there.
A friend of mine who lives in NOLA talked to GPJ after a show recently. Porter said the Desitively Bonnaroo set will be late night, so take that for what it's worth. I'm really hoping it's true.
I hope you are right. My last latenight for awhile and this would be the best thing for me to have.
Are we seriously thinkng that mmj will be at the same time as dr. john and the meters. That is about the worst conflict I could have and if it is true i might cry.

According to some poster who talked to Jim James at a small show in Louisville, MMJ will be playing before Arcade Fire on the main stage. So we may see some of Arcade Fire be conflicting with the Dr. John Desitively Bonnaroo set.

I can't wait to see this Dr. John set.
Hopefully that will stay the same and not have it during mmj? I don't mind missing af, but mmj and dr john are my top two must see's.

I agree. I'm thinking that Dr. John will start some point after AF has started (but before they finished). That way some people can see AF but then go to Dr. John and the other late nights. I'm hoping that anyway.
it's like they're daring everyone to miss this set.
"Oh really? Dr. John and The ORIGINAL METERS didn't sell you? We added one of the few living blues musicians worthy enough of walking out on that stage. Seriously. Miss this set. See. What happens."
