Yea your right that one was my bad not real familiar with Opeth I just knew they were linked to that title. I am hoping Bonnaroo includes all genres but I am hoping they definantly go back to the roots that made them the festival they are. Last year was a little disappointing more hipsters than hippies I need my wookie fix back. You would not believe the trouble I went through to find a french bread pizza.
For Opeth, I have only seen refrences to Martin Lopez's (ex drummer) departure from the band, and nothing so far about the departure of Peter Lindgren. He was a guitarist in Opeth for close to 16 years, and is from the U.K. (Lad?) Peter left the band in 2007 and shortly after his departure the band recorded the album "Watershed" with two new members Martin Axenrot on drums, and Fredrick Akesson on guitar. Not only was the album named "Watershed", but it's release was a watershed moment for the band as there were two new members in the band, and many fans thought the band was finished without Peter.
Plus Martin Lopez was born in Swededn but is of Latin Decent (Mexican Food) and Peter Lindgren is from the U.K. (Scotch)...

Gary said the scotch and mexican food tweet wasn't a hint.

Wow... I think I've figured it out and if I'm right it's a brilliant first clue.
The Answer:
"The Guess Who" - kind of funny for a first clue isn't it.
Process:
We've confirmed via Gary the first part of the clue:
"A trip to space thwarted by a speckled lad" - Ron Howard aka Opie
The Demise comes from the move Almost Famous. In the scene where the girls take Patrick Fugit's virginity (a watershed moment) they yell out "Opie must die!" (Opie's demise).
Ok, I've went over some things and have narrowed down the choices from the last 10 pages. Now we just need to break up what is left and make some sense out of it. Let me know if I missed any one.
Also, after a chat with Vector Viking, I'm going to add Storm Corrosion. It's a collaboration with members of Opeth and Porcupine Tree.
I don't have a Twitter account. Can anyone confirm if someone asked Gary about them? I know Lovelucklaughter had this exchange with him:
You tell me. RT @pbpowercat: garychardonnay Do Opeth and Porcupine Tree have anything in common?
Gary said he had seen the answer. It might not have came from this thread.
50 Cent -"Very clever indeed." (in response to mc asking if we're looking for two metal bands) Deftones - Mentioned on page 7. Empire of the Sun "Get your heads out the clouds, and look closer to earth."-Gary GWAR Highly unlikely. Killswitch Engage Guessed right before Gary tweeted "Sorry, nothing for #1 just yet. Keep at it." RT agenthal: Metallica Highly unlikely. Opeth Karosko brought them up on page 22. Ruled out by Gary? RATM Not really metal. Brought up before page 53. Rodrigo Y Gabriela Mistook Gary's Mexican food tweet. Silversun Pickups "Get your heads out the clouds, and look closer to earth."-Gary Sufjan Stevens -"Very clever indeed." (in response to mc asking if we're looking for two metal bands) The Sword - Ruled out according to Roo clues
Apollo 13 Amon Amarth - New Album March 2011 Bolt Throwers - I've only seen one US tour date in the last decade. Corrosion of Conformity - Touring Europe in the Spring but the last date listed is in the US on 05/27/2011 Dethklok Halford - Dates in Europe? Kyuss Lives! - In Australia/N.Z. until the end of May. Then they've got a date in Spain on June 23. Mastodon Meshuggah Picture Praxis - Would this be considered true heavy metal? Sun 0))) - Might should be eliminated because of Gary's clues. Can't find any current activity with these guys. Tiamat
Alice in Chains - Not metal Eagles of Death Metal - Not metal. Bassist is battling cancer. QOTSA - Not metal Storm Corrosion - acoustic project The Knife - Not metal.

Wait, wait...I thought Clues 1 and 3 were solved- Sword and some other metal band that starts with a "K." Am I wrong? ??? What happened to those being absolute?
2012 Wishlist: Radiohead Phish Daft Punk Ghostland Observatory Broken Social Scene Roger Waters Bell X1 Bonobo Chemical Brothers Fiona Apple Built to Spill Modest Mouse

3 is solved. The answer for 1 is somewhere in the last 10-12 pages. It's there we just have to narrow it down.

I also tweeted Hawkwind to Gary before he said he saw the right answer, so I'll add that to the list.
Also, I don't think you can just use "highly unlikely" as a reason to completely rule out bands. Highly unlikely =/= impossible.
Apollo 13 Alice in Chains Amon Amarth Bolt Throwers Corrosion of Conformity Dethklok Eagles of Death Metal Halford Kyuss Lives! Mastodon Picture Praxis QOTSA Storm Corrosion Sun 0))) Tiamat The Knife GWAR Metallica Meshuggah Hawkwind

Ahh, I knew I would miss something.
Fair enough. I should have worded that better but I'm pretty certain we can rule those two bands out. I could be wrong.
Speaking of Hawkwind, Motorhead was brought up but I didn't include them because I'm pretty sure it was mentioned before page 53. This thread is so quacking confusing.

This may be inane jabber, since my life is on the road and I don't get to follow much of this thread: but Modest Mouse has two drummers, and was originally a three man band until they added Johnny Marr (The Smiths) and Joe Plummer (Black Heart Procession), and then became mainstream with two albums. For them this was a watershed moment. "Look closer to the earth", may refer to an older album titled The MOON and Antarctica, and this "similar cast"- as was hinted- was the original three members of the band. Buehler? Buehler
50 Cent -"Very clever indeed." (in response to mc asking if we're looking for two metal bands) Apollo 13 - Very small band, Gary didn't lead the hints back towards a definite "Apollo" direction. Deftones - Mentioned on page 7. Empire of the Sun - "Get your heads out the clouds, and look closer to earth."-Gary GWAR - Unlikely to appear two years in a row. Killswitch Engage Guessed right before Gary tweeted "Sorry, nothing for #1 just yet. Keep at it." RT agenthal: Metallica - Highly unlikely to headline again, so no. Opeth - Karosko brought them up on page 22. Ruled out by Gary? RATM - Not really metal. Brought up before page 53. Rodrigo Y Gabriela - Mistook Gary's Mexican food tweet. Silversun Pickups - "Get your heads out the clouds, and look closer to earth."-Gary Sufjan Stevens -"Very clever indeed." (in response to mc asking if we're looking for two metal bands) Sun 0))) - "Get your heads out the clouds, and look closer to earth."-Gary The Sword
Probable wrong:
Alice in Chains - Not metal. Bolt Throwers - I've only found one US tour date in the last decade. Eagles of Death Metal - Not metal. Bassist is battling cancer (Fuck Cancer. Get well soon.) QOTSA - Not metal Picture - No active web presence that I can find. They don't seem to have anything going on. The Knife - Not metal.
Less likely: Halford - Playing with Judus Priest in Sweden sometime between the 8th and 11th of June. Hawkwind - Playing in Sweden on the 11th of June. Kyuss Lives! - In Australia/N.Z. until the end of May. Then they've got a date in Spain on June 23. Praxis - Would this be considered true heavy metal? Storm Corrosion - Acoustic project from members of Porcupine Tree and Opeth. I've found no evidence that they were ever tweeted as a possible answer. Tiamat
Bands we need to really look into: Amon Amarth - New Album March 2011 Corrosion of Conformity - Touring Europe in the Spring but the last date listed is in the US on 05/27/2011. Plus, the corrosion of Opie and Richie Cunningham's values sorta makes sense. Dethklok Mastodon Meshuggah
OK, Ladies and Gents. Lets narrow this down. I have no clue how to fit this stuff to the clue. I'm not a metal fan. Somebody solve this Leno!
Edit: Obviously, the bands I've marked out are still open for discussion. I'm just posting my own methods of deduction, which are highly suspect.

why was opeth ruled out again? didnt gary tweet that he had seen the right answer like minutes after opeth was guessed? they seemed like the most likely choice to me. also why is the sword ruled out, i thought they seemed pretty likely too

I tweeted The Sword to Gary some 15 minutes before he said that he hadn't seen a correct answer.

Karosko brought up Opeth on the 22nd page. JHOinTN tweeted Gary about them and didn't get a response. Plus, the main discussion regarding them was a day or so before Gary said he saw the answer. I agree that they make sense and that's why I left Storm Corrosion as a possible answer.
The Sword was brought up in the first 53 pages. I will say the time-line between the first time I saw them mentioned and Gary's tweet(Sorry, nothing for #1 just yet. Keep at it) was very short.

Regarding Dethklok:
There are so many pages and guesses that someone probably already mentioned this and I missed it, but there is an episode of Metalocalypse involving Ron Howard going back in time to save someone.. Thoughts?

Nice!!!!
I've never watched the show. Do you remember anything else about the episode that ties in with the clue?
