GC's response said something about falling off the right path when exploring Ron Howard as the speckled lad, Opie. Opie's last name was Taylor. He also said something about elements. "Fire and Rain," by James Taylor references all four elements, earth (ground), air (flying machines), fire and water (rain). Supposedly written about Mr. Taylor's speckled past in mental hospitals.
I could get behind this. Probably only because I'm slightly related to him, though. He's married to some cousin I've never met on my mom's side of the family. Like my 4th cousin? Something like that. But I would love it to be James Taylor.

Gary Sinise, who played Lt. Dan in Forrest Gump, started that band. He also played Ken Mattingly in Apollo 13, the guy exposed to measles (spotted lad) that didn't make the launch. The watershed moment was his role in Forrest Gump.

Tha would be awesome! But this band is named after the movie "Forrest Gump" what has it to do with Apollo 13?
Tom Hanks is a common element in both movies, and has been in other Ron Howard directorials. Tom Hanks... Hanks... Hank Williams, Hank Williams Jr? Hank Williams III? Wiki's page on HW2 mentions the album, "Hank Williams Jr. and Friends" as a "watershed." If Hank Williams III could somehow be squeezed from this clue (or clue 3!), I'd be happy. Both Hanks on the Farm?
So clue 1 and 3 may be similar in nature, they both may be about movies, they may be about a patricular actor or film maker, or it may just take similar logic to figure these 2 clues out.
Clue 3 seems to me like its pointing to a movie / book / song where the main character is suffering from a sleep disorder, or has been cut off from civilization, some ideas:
Cast Away, staring tom hanks Insomnia, staring Al Pacino The Machinist, staring Christian Bale
as far as clue 1 goes, Apollo 13 makes too much sense, I just cant go any further with it..

Hank the third can honestly rest my nuts on his forehead, i cannot get down with him or Assjack, i know you relating it to the clue but if we do get a "rock-a-billy/punk-country" act i would either hope for SLIM CESNAS AUTO CLUB and/or this band from my hometown called THE golly gee GALLOWS, both of them blow hank the 3rd out of the water, man i dont know why but i have a avid hate for hank, im clinching my teefys just thinking about how much i dislike his music. <<<<hahahah rant rant rant...
Clue 1 could refer to Owen Pallett. Then if clue 3 involves a similar "cast" it could be Arcade Fire. Since Owen Pallett wrote most of the strings for their debut album and even performed with them on SNL a little while back.
I'm pretty sure "common cast" means that the bands would share members(s)
Yeah, could be this too.
Who is capable of playing at the farm in two different bands?
Tom Morello could play in RATM and SSSC. (maybe Zach was the speckled lad ..."Of a mixed character; motley."...) Can't remember if that was brought up yet or not.
Going back to elements, Nickel Creek has members that are now solo (Sara Watkins) and in the Punch Bros. Do either of them line up well with Clues 1 and 3?
I like this too, but can't think of any way to tie it in. Also with all the talk of fishing I am suprised no one has said anything about Fishman. I am calling a late night Fish/vacuum solo set FTW!
Also, let's Give credit where it's due.(unless you were not being serious.(it's hard to read tone in the interwebs)
My guess. Simplify it. We got Apollo 13. Who was in Apollo 13? Kevin Bacon. Gary Chardonnay just used the word Cast in a hint. So there are two options:
