im not sure, but somehow somebody came to Ben Harper early, and ive lost in the 27 pages that ensued.
and im not able to connect all the piece but some ideas to throw out in regards to Fistful of Mercy.
astronauts go to space, and Joseph Arthur's band is The Lonely Astronaut, and its also the title of his album.
his song In The Sun, was covered for the Katrina Relief CD, a hurricane could be a 'watershed' moment, also it could be said Katrina lead to (at least a temporary) demise to the city of New Orleans.
also the trip to space could be thwarted because hes no longer astronaut, hes now part of Fistful of Mercy, so for the time being he is no longer the Lonely Astronaut.
im prob off here, but anyone have thoughts?
I came up with Fistful of Mercy via Beatles/Kennedy/Apollo 13 and also via Conan's last episode of the Tonight Show (which featured Ben Harper)
Good catch on the Joseph Arthur part. We may be on to something here.
I say right now we keep bumping our best guesses up in the thread as long as we can, so we can, hopefully, get an idea if we're on the right track tomorrow... I think Gardenfresh is right, we could be over thinking a lot of stuff when we already hit it... Guess we won't know until atleast tomorrow!
I think that alot of people have had very good guesses that are very plausable with the clue... We need to start formulating a plan to get some feedback from dj katie tomorrow!
Someone may have guessed the band correctly but I have yet to read a guess that logically incorporates all parts of the clue. Then again, some of the clues in the past have been anything but logical.

afresh takes on this whole debacle, I know Bowies been brought up but at least check this out
a trip to space immediately makes me think of david bowie, space oddity, SO
a trip to space being thwarted could be about a bowie show being cancelled..... this happened once in 04 when one of the stagehands died (no word on if he was speckled but here uk.music.ign.com/articles/512/512321p1.html) so theres your demise....
and to tie it all together it took place in miami which in the truest sense of the word, is a watershed "A watershed is the area of land where all of the water that is under it or drains off of it goes into the same place." the ocean
sooooo
A Trip to Space = A performance of David Bowies Space oddity Thwarted by a speckled lads demise = death of a stagehand cancelled the show A watershed moment otherwise = by taking place in Miami could loosely be considered a "watershed" moment

I mean as far as that meaning it's Bowie goes I'm skeptical, but I definitely see some merit in the theory that it's about a cancelled show of some sort?
who was scheduled to open for bowie that show? i dont think we'd get a clue for bowie this early on, not to mention i think getting bowie would be to good to be true.

The wiki article for the tour implies there wasn't an opener, his band would just start playing.

Yeahhh I agree. Especially because we all thought Bowie as soon as we saw the word "space." Even if it referred to this one specific incident it'd be too easy a clue since we would have gotten to the answer without actually solving the clue.
The opening act sounded possible, but I agree that since the Stereophonics did play we can't really say THEIR trip to space was thwarted. Unless they're somehow the watershed moment, but I'm not sure how that would work.
Speckled could also mean "Of a mixed character; motley" Lee Harvey Oswald?
"A trip to space thwarted by a speckled lad's demise. A watershed moment otherwise"
Oswald killed Kennedy only a little over a month after the proposal, essentially making the proposal irrelevant. Yet, out of all of this, the program did become a success (watershed moment).
Dead Kennedys
I dunno, makes sense to me, without thinking too deep into it. But then again it's 3am and I neeed sleeeeeeppp.

tenuous? psssshhhhhh
OK... First I'll access the secret military spy satelite that is in geosynchronous orbit over the midwest. Theeen I'll ID the limo by the vanity plate "MR. BIGGG" and get his approximate position. Theeeeen I'll reposition the transmission dish on the remote truck to 17.32 degrees east, hit WESTAR 4 over the Atlantic, bounce the signal back into the aerosphere up to COMSAT 6, beam it back to SATCOM 2 transmitter number 137 and down on the dish on the back of Mr. Big's limo... It's almost too easy.

I kinda like the canceled show thinking...there are several other acts whose shows could be considered trips to space. The FLips come to mind, or Spiritualized as someone mentioned earlier. Maybe there's a canceled show from some other act that fits the clue.
idk where to go with that, though...I don't know if the act in question would BE the answer or if we'd have to take it a step further somehow.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, I'll go get Cassandra-- you do the rest!!!
i bet this information will come in handy for ya, jerrysalive:
things I think are important to state/reiterate at this point:
1. It is almost certainly not a huge artist. Macca, Bowie, even Muse are not it.
2. Having said that, a "watershed moment" is something people would know. I think it's more likely that the moment would refer to general public knowledge as opposed to a smaller artist's personal watershed moment. So there's a good chance that it's more of a significant artist like Explosions in the Sky or Arcade Fire, not saying it's either, just saying this clue strikes me as an upper middle lineup band.
3. "A trip to space thwarted by a speckled lad's demise. A watershed moment otherwise." The two sentences are referring to the same moment, so I think it's safe to say the two events happened simultaneously. Whether or not the space part is to be taken literally is something I don't know, but I feel like we've explored that for a good chunk of the thread, so I'm gonna say for the sake of argument that it's more of a metaphorical phrase.
4. I'm 55% sure "speckled lad" is British.
So in conclusion. A decently big artist that's British or with British ties that had a particularly well known (and perhaps terrible) moment in their career that is common knowledge to the public. It's also important to note that each word probably means something else and the word demise was chosen so it very well might be death.
"trip to space" - rise up, definitive moment, launch "speckled lad" - British, young, freckled. also of questionable character "demise" - death, downfall
This was more my thinking all jotted down than a quality contribution, so sorry for that, gang.

I did some research on cancelled flips shows, I know they cancelled a lot of dates last year, a lot of their shows were done with Stardeath, Fang Island, Spoon, or Black Keys.
At this point I think this current path is too much of a stretch to go down, but there you go.
the thing is the clue says "a watershed moment." so I'm kind of wary about accepting a different interpretation?
A watershed is an area of land that drains to a common location. A watershed can vary in size, they can represent the area draining to a small stream to the entire are draining to an ocean.
I'm sure you can interpret some kind of "moment" out of that. Just trying to expand the thinking a little on what we see "watershed" as.
Also, I am 100% positive the group of people who created this clue + AC/Superfly exects are reading this thread just having a big ole laugh about how far off we probably are.......bastards!

or we hit it in our first three guesses and have since got so far off the mark it's ridic.
anyway if you can find an interpretation of that kind of watershed as having to do with a moment, and relating to the rest of the clue, then I stand corrected!

Fistful Of Mercy
