I feel like ruling Apollo Brown out is easy enough, since I don't think a single one of us has ever heard of such a band. My crack research team says Apollo 440 is feasible, but I dunno. I've never heard of them before today.
Your probably right about taking out Apollo Brown, he's an underground rapper btw.
And to be fair, I haven't heard of a whole lot of bands that have played at roo, so just because you haven't heard of them doesn't mean they aren't the right answer.
True enough. Apollo Sunshine has at least played Bonnaroo before, however. (Plus they are from here and that's pretty awesome imo >_>)
Phoenix has played the last 2 years. They won't be on the lineup this year.
MMJ, Old Crow Medicine Show, right off the top of my head.
Les Claypool...
Avett brothers, Drive By Truckers < not sure but think so
I'll need better reasons than this to think not Phoenix. What more of a watershed moment than discovering history of water on Mars ? This isn't even wishful thinking on my part. I could give a ratsass if they are there, I just am having a hard time denying it, esp on the premise of no 3rd timers...
The better reason not to think Phoenix is that it's unlikely they will play 3 years in a row. Most bands don't get that opportunity, especially as the festival has continued to grow and expand. Is it possible? Yes. Is it probable? Most likely not. But I'd like to see 'em back since I missed 'em in '09 and only caught the first half of 'em this past summer (had to get on the road home).

Point taken.
What about Joaquin Phoenix and his supposed hiphop band ? Would make sense for extreme undercard this early. Wouldn't doubt his narcissistic drug addled presence in some capacity...

I'm pretty sure that was all a big joke by joaquin, and the band doesn't really exist.

Okay, so I've finally read 27 pages of thoughts and still haven't come anywhere near being decided on anything. Nothing has really convinced me or come close.
As I've been going I've been keeping notes and adding thoughts both original and inspired by things I've read here. Maybe they'll be helpful to somebody else:
Clue 1
A trip to space thwarted by a speckled lad's demise. A watershed moment otherwise.
A trip to space = literal? Launch? (journey into a void?, journey to avoid?) Thwarted = stopped By a = literal Speckled lad (‘s) = spotted boy. Freckles? Chicken pox? (lad = Brittish/Scottish/Irish?) (spotted d!ck = pudding) Demise = death or end A watershed moment = game changing? Division? Tearful? Birth? (unlikely = peeing) Otherwise = literal? Other y’s? other why’s? “speckled lad’s demise” = Gary Glitter’s arrest for child porn? Watershed = delta, river basin?
it is fairly sound reasoning the way you came to Gary Glitter but I have a hard time believing that guy would be allowed to enter the country with his record
Maybe she IS talking about Apollo 13 but we haven't been specific enough about what it is that was thwarted--A MAN WALKING on the moon...a walkman? The Walkmen?
Otherwise a "watershed moment"--referring to the invention of the Walkman, which changed the way people listened to music.

Yeah, I don't think that he's the answer. Just a random thought that might lead to a better line of thinking. I think he's pretty much in seclusion these days, at least according to seemingly every random countdown on VH1!
Very good thinking, but you still have to address "speckled lad's demise."
that's part of the Apollo 13 thing--astronaut Ken mattingly was grounded because of exposure to German measles
I don't know much about it and I probably just missed when it was mentioned earlier, but is there really any way the explosion can be attributed to him not being there? And besides, I'm not sure exposure to German measles really counts as demise, lol. But I like your thinking apart from that, definitely something to consider.

As for Gary Glitter, his "demise" thwarted a lot of stadiums and arenas that played "Rock and Roll Part 2" for goals and the like...a lot of them stopped playing the song after his arrest. But I'm not sure how arena songs connect to a trip to space or a watershed moment, just figured I'd throw it out there since it's the only thing I can think of connected to Gary Glitter.

I think it could be understood that HIS trip was thwarted because of the measles, not THE trip was thwarted (which it was anyhow). Also, remember that 'demise' can mean "a loss of position or status". He definitely lost his position as an astronaut aboard the mission.

Not to mention the nail biting drama starring Tom Hanks we got out of it. Wait a minute. Speckled Lad-- Ken Mattingly, Ken Mattingly was portrayed by Gary Sinise-- Gary Chardonnay!

Ah, good thinking about it being his personal trip that was thwarted. But I'm still not sure about demise since the trip to space was thwarted BY the speckled lad's demise - that is, the thwarted trip can't BE the demise in question if it was thwarted BY the demise. Or something like that, haha...my brain is getting muddled.

Not saying this to be pessimistic, but rather I'm saying this to point out how complexly involved we can get into games like this... but here goes....
What if we are nowhere CLOSE to solving this clue, and we've just been expanding on thoughts that are way off. How do we know? We won't know until someone tells us we solved it, and in the meantime we just drive our minds crazier and crazier wrapped up with this enigmatic clues?!?!?! Madness!!
im not sure, but somehow somebody came to Ben Harper early, and ive lost it in the 27 pages that ensued.
and im not able to connect all the pieces but some ideas to throw out in regards to Fistful of Mercy.
astronauts go to space, and Joseph Arthur's band is The Lonely Astronaut, and its also the title of his label.
his song In The Sun, was covered for the Katrina Relief CD, a hurricane could be a 'watershed' moment, also it could be said Katrina lead to (at least a temporary) demise to the city of New Orleans.
also the trip to space could be thwarted because hes no longer astronaut, hes now part of Fistful of Mercy, so for the time being he is no longer the Lonely Astronaut.
im prob off here, but anyone have thoughts?

I say right now we keep bumping our best guesses up in the thread as long as we can, so we can, hopefully, get an idea if we're on the right track tomorrow... I think Gardenfresh is right, we could be over thinking a lot of stuff when we already hit it... Guess we won't know until atleast tomorrow!
I'm still not convinced that the clue involves Apollo 13, or even space at all. I'm still trying to think along the lines of a trip to space simply referring to a launch, as in a band or artist's debut...but I don't really have much beyond that at this point. An act that was supposed to play Conan's Tonight Show before he was fired was an idea, but I can't find any info related to that.
I mentioned the Howdy Doody show a long time ago in reference to the speckled lad, perhaps thinking that a band or artist was supposed to debut on his show before it was cancelled. After looking at that a little more I see that his handler (and voice) was Buffalo Bob, who died in 1998.
