when i looked at coachella's lineup, i bought tickets nearly immediately.
roo tickets were acquired before the lineup... if we had waited, it might have worked out that we only went to coachella & vibes instead. hell, with the vacation time saved, might have squeezed lolla in there too.
that said, the lineup looks like other have said: sort of "meh" days and some hot nights. i try not to go into centeroo before 5, so this might not be a big deal to me. consider me okay with it, but not overwhelmed.
as far as the Jay Z haters, you people are out of your mind
my only complaint is that terrible 90s bands that are being shoved down our throats: they might be giants, weezer, amos, 311.....this is like a VH1 concert for aging housewives with saggy labia.
I'm going to roo, for a free vacation, jimmy cliff, black keys and flips. oh and to laugh at all the brosephs going to 311.
With rothbury folding up the tent this summer I was expecting a much better lineup--not a hater...but my 02-09 streak has ended.Gonna try something new this year.
-When I Hear My Name -Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground -Blue Orchid -Passive Manipulation -Red Rain -Death Letter -My Doorbell -Hotel Yorba -Same Boy You've Always Known -Lovesick -Little Ghost -We're Going to Be Friends -The Hardest Button to Button -Black Math -The Nurse -I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself
Encore: -Ball and Biscuit -Seven Nation Army -Screwdriver
bonnaroo has always meant acts like flaming lips, les claypool, mmj, jack white, disco biscuits. some i adore (lips, les, jack) and others i watch grow as a band that frequent the farm (kol, jack, mmj) and a bunch i met for the first time last year. this year is only my second, but i've been to at least 20 festivals in my young life and this is an already solid line up. it's missing comedy, and a second round of announcements, tho, so cheer up... poopypants. the gems are there, they're just between the lines and in the undercard.
and, agreed kol aren't headliners but they've been on the farm almost as many times as mmj, and tho their last album was shite, it's still a good show. also, i'm bummed no mmj.
obviously, there's little else can be said about the lazily sloshed digs at jay z (or kanye, for that matter) other than any scant remnant of familiarity with said artists is clearly something you lack. kanye part 2? seriously? go back to 1993. your stereotypes are better suited there.
what about the d? slaying f*ucking demons? pillaging? plundering? flinging mind bullets?
the black keys? a major check in my "pro" column.
legends a plenty. new and fun bands to introduce myself to? yes please. why erryone so hurt?
It's a mixed bag for me. Not really impressed with the headliners; as others have said there's no real "HOLY SHIT" type bands that I feel people would murder to see. Not saying anything bad about DMB, KOL, Jay-Z or Stevie Wonder, they don't seem to have the grab as previous headliners.
Or it could be I'm completely out of touch with the music world. In all honesty, I don't think I've heard a single song of KOL; or at least one that was memorable enough.
The real draw for me is the middle and lower. Tori Amos? I've been dying to see her for years. John Fogerty on the farm? About goddamn time. Flaming Lips doing DSotM? Probably the main attraction for me. Also, Julia Nunes is charming as hell.
So yeah, a mix for me; it could use more electronica and jam, which will probably be thrown in later.
Its a good lineup, but not enough to get me there this year. First child for my wife and I is due in Late May, so I've been planning on taking this summer off from festivals anyways. I'm actually pretty relieved that there aren't any "Holy crap, I have to get there" bands this year.
Although, I would absolutely love to see Stevie Wonder.
i hope it doesnt work. diverse is awsome, but not when diversity includes mediocrity.
i mean 311 ? how stoned were they when they decided on 311?
I went to 311 last year in Cincinnati and it was a great time. Very fun show. I'm not going to believe there are at Bonnaroo though until their name shows up on the lineup page.
deff. not happy with the headliners.... huge step back from previous years. it almost seems like someone dropped and we ended up with this (excuses lol). ive heard a lot about the undercard acts but honestly would need to listen to them more to get hyped for this year. only things that stick out to me are FLips, dead weather, lcd soundsystem.
I can go to Hullabalou in Louisville on a day pass if I want to see DMB. It's a first year festival and they have DMB. I'll probably just go to small festivals now to enjoy the environment. I have loved every moment at the Roo, but for the money it cost I need to have lots more to get me to the farm. I'm just glad I don't buy tickets till I see the lineup. I think you'll be able to buy tickets last minute for cheap.

I'm "OK." I love DMB and really enjoy the addition of Tim Reynolds to the band. Kings of Leon -- I like the older stuff. Jay-Z - excited to see. Stevie is legendary and has a vast body of work. Flaming Lips etc doing Darkside could be mind-blowing. Also excited about Thievery, Jeff Beck, They Might Be Giants, and MMW (none of whom I've seen) and The Dead Weather, Damian Marley, Regina Spektor, Dave Rawlings, and Trombone Shorty (who I have seen). Would love to see them add some more jamminess (like Furthur), a blues legend, and some more funk. I know there will be additions and for a first announcement, I'm "OK."
There are a lot of great things on this lineup, but I feel like most everyone else that the top of the lineup is weak. I was expecting to be blown away at 9PM with this long drawn out release.
I just don't really care about this lineup. This would be a good lineup for about $125. But it's more than twice that for GA, and $1500 ($750 each) for VIP. (I've gone VIP every year since 2006). It just doesn't seem worth the price tag at any level, but especially VIP.
I'm not really sure who Bonnaroo is marketing to anymore. They have clearly backed off the jam-friendly lineup, only offering up a few jamband acts, DMB, Lotus, Biscuits, MMW.
I'm wondering if they think they need to market to an entirely different group with Phish on tour at the same time this summer. The hippies will jump on Phish tour, so they feel the need to draw more mainstream music lovers with DMB, KOL, Jay-Z, Weezer etc. That's the only logical thing I can think here.
I'm 95% not going right now, which sucks b/c it'll be the first time I've ever missed it. 8 straight years, but I had a good run. The only thing that could possibly change my mind is a sick late-night lineup, which I could possibly go up for just the latenights, but we won't know that until May, at which point I may have made other plans.
- meh lineup bonnaroo. Maybe if you reduced ticket prices I could get on board, but once again you increased them. At what point will you feel the ticket price is high enough that you don't need to increase it?

There are plenty legendary acts booked. But by far this is the worst lineup since my first Roo in 08. There are only a handful of acts I would check out if I went, and most of them I,ve seen before(many at prev. Roos). I not a big fan f the headliners anyways, I like to see the undercard. So these headliners dont bother me much, since I dont usually watchthem. But the rest of the line up is weak and old IMO. Wheres all the fresh new indie acts like years before? The XX , Neon Indian are cool but, it's too much money and too far away to go for this lineup.
[ There needs to be at least one EPIC type band that appeals to everyone.
That act should be Stevie Wonder, but for some reason, he doesn't appeal to the mass... which is crazy, to me.
Oh, and I put "Ok"... it's got great acts all over, more than enough substance to warrant a ticket purchase from me. One more big, wide reaching top teir act, and it's an all around great lineup.
I just think the absence of one more big headliner hurt its overall appeal more than many would have thought.
Stevie Wonder is awesome and a legend, but are people really going to go out of their way to get to Bonnaroo to see Stevie?
He seems like he would be more of an act that people would see b/c they are at Bonnaroo and he is at Bonnaroo, not an act that makes people say "Well, I can't miss Bonnaroo, b/c Stevie Wonder is playing."
Not impressed to the point where my crew is actually pulling out and looking for alts - namely JazzFest or maybe even Coachella (b/c most are from the West Coast). DMB was epic in the 90s but haven't listened much new since he went mainstream in 2000. Stevie Wonder? Great HOF guy but he's 60 something years old. Jay-Z? Whatever Kayne part II i thought SuperFly would've learned their lesson in bling-bling slap-the-ho crap rap in 2008. Kings of Leon - yawn - another mainstream pop rock band that is not headline material. Some solid undercards for late night sets but no great jam bands. Only show I'd like to see is the Lips do Dark Side of the Moon but it's not enough.
So RIP Bonnaroo '10 you'll be missed hopefully you get your act together for 2011.
I will say this, with trying to start as small amount of nuts as possible. However Wakarusa for my personal tastes has a better lineup right now than Bonnaroo. As much as I like John Prine, and Tori Amos, and a lot of this undercard, the headliner and big act situation looks grim. Other than Stevie there is not much I care about until you get to Jimmy Cliff. However nobody said Bonnaroo was done yet.
I hear ya Jess and feel the same way except for Dead Weather, Stevie the top listings so far don't make me want to go. Not overly impressed personally...certainly not going to get me to make the trip this year. Esp. since I have now moved back to beautiful CO and am so much further away. Cliff if fine but for me ---whatever..I've seen him 20+ years ago a few times. Sure there are plenty of good undercard acts I like but for me nothing overly steller, again, to get me to make the long journey across country. I like DMB ok but not all that much. And as for the rest of the top I really don't like them at all. Looks like no Roo for me this year.
I don't care what you say about me, just spell my name right---P.T. Barnum "As I was walking up the stairs I met a man who wasn't there He wasn't there again today I wish to God he'd go away."
I seem to lean slightly to what most people have been saying: the lineup is pretty damn good, but there needs to be a big headliner. It seems like it's missing an act with a lot of weight. For instance, Paul McCartney or Roger Waters would be a perfect example of the kind of headliner they need to add. I guess only time will tell, however...
Either way, I'm going. While the headliners are somewhat weak so-far, the other bands make up for it (for me). Out of the current lineup, I've made a list of 29 acts that I really want to see. DMB because they're extraordinarily talented musicians (Carter Beuford > *); Stevie Wonder because it's Stevie Wonder; Tenacious D because the D is extreme; Norah Jones because she's Ravi fucking Shankar's daughter; John Fogerty because CCR is the tits; LCD Soundsystem, Bassnectar, Dan Deacon, Deadmau5, and Thievery Corporation because I love having a ménage à trois with Molly and Lucy; and several others that I could list if I didn't have a feeling no one gave a shit.
So even if this was the final lineup, 29 out of the 93 or whatever bands is a good reason to pay $250. Add in the amazing Bonnaroo experience and the fact that I only live 50 minutes away and, well, I'd be stupid not to go.

every year the same thing happens when the initial lineup drops, people complain, they say bonnaroo sucks and they're not going anymore. Every year Bonnaroo keeps going strong, while other fests struggle and die off or go on hiatus. I'll be there, as I've been since '03 and I always have a great time. I've been to plenty of other fests too, some which died off, but I can always rely on 'roo and I haven't been let down yet. I like the lineup so far and I know there will be additions so reserve judgement until the entire lineup is out.
Can't wait to see:
Stevie Wonder Jay-Z Dead Weather John Fogerty Jimmy Cliff The Avett Brothers Thievery Corporation The National Les Claypool John Prine The Black Keys Jeff Beck She & Him Daryl Hall & Chromeo Clutch Bassnectar Kris Kristofferson Medeski Martin & Wood The xx GWAR The Melvins Dr. Dog Isis Blitzen Trapper Calexico Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue Lotus Baroness Japandroids Here We Go Magic Neon Indian

I agree, but this is the first time i've actually agreed with them. I've never missed Roo. I definitely don't like thinking the lineup is weak, but I do.
Now, there are great ASPECTS to the lineup, but there are a bunch of weak aspects as well. I'd say this year, the weak outweighs the great, which is the first year I've ever said that.
I just don't know who they are marketing to anymore. It used to be a lineup built on great LIVE bands. Doesn't seem to be that way anymore. How many of those bands are renowned for their live show? Not many.

I hear you, man but we're not done yet...hell I've been expecting Neil Young all week & yesterday I thought Roger Waters was confirmed!! So i'm not saying there wasn't some measure of let down but I have faith in 'roo. I'm still hoping for MMJ as a late night add
I realize we are not done, but the additions in the last few years have been severely lacking, which is why I'm not getting my hopes up.
The last time they actually had additions that were worthwhile was in 2006, when they added Claypool, Oysterhead, Bisco/UM interlocking and Sonic Youth. Since then the additions have been piss poor imo.
