I genuinely hope these bullfeathers blow harmlessly away. it's just these incidences form an interesting and unusual constellation I've not seen before. Bonnaroo canceled because of a flu epidemic? I mean, wtf? Couldn't happen, right? Catfish walking on land is more likely, right?
The lineup for this year's Bonnaroo is outstanding, not to be missed. A chance in a lifetime collection of musical talent. Swine flu on a horse farm doesn't make any sense.

Do you have a short memory, or are you disregarding other "super diseases" that were supposed to kill us all like SARS and Bird Flu.
Ok once again comparing this to the 1918 pandemic based upon a few cases is at alarmist at bet.
The state plan will become active contingent on the *severity* of the 1918 pandemic. That's what the plan says. And yes, we are a very long way from that level of severity.

Mexico City is the hotspot for this virus. Mexico is among if not our largest trading partner. Much of our fresh produce is grown in Mexico, and most of our produce is tended and picked by immigrant labor, from Mexico. Do produce farms in Mexico utilize pig manure?
Bird flu is still a concern, and I understand some of the genetic material in this latest flu is from avian origin. Health procedures implemented as a result of SARS may help to restrict spread of this virus. Memory serves us well.
Personally I am just hoping a large meteor does not hit the farm and eradicate it. Also it is possible the New Madrid fault might produce another earthquake along the lines of the events in the early 1800's. Of course Yellowstone might erupt in a supervolcano clouding the atmosphere and dropping 3 inches of ash across the farm. Also genetically engineered sharks with laser beams attached to their heads and lungs might invade so I just hope there is a 'roo to go to this year

riburro keeps going back to this. Catastrophic stirring up and saying things like he wishes there will be a roo to go back to and when the thread goes off topic he brings it up again. So riburro what is your motive? Is this attention seeking last year you were worried about chiggers.
The official Bonnaroo site warns of chiggers. Give me snakes. Give me spiders. Give me ticks. But, *don't* give me chiggers. You don't see them. They crawl right through your tennis shoes and socks. You don't know you've been bitten until it's too late. And, the bites itch for weeks, sometimes forming blisters, and can get infected by the constant scratching.
I know two people who had to be treated at the emergency room for chigger bites, hundreds of bites, itching relentlessly for 2 weeks. They scratched 'til their legs were raw and bleeding. I've gone so far as to dust my socks and pants with Sevin insecticide.
A Marine once told me he and his comrades wore nylons while in the Middle East desert to guard against whatever microscopic biting mite is over there. Said they work for chiggers too. The little buggers can't get through the tight weave. Of course, bug repellent (Off, Cutters, etc.) works well.

Between a mild case of the flu or a bad bout with chiggers, I'd be tempted to take the flu. Chiggers are a concern. If you've ever had them, especially if you're allergic, and the bites form quarter-sized blisters that take weeks to heal... Never had them at Roo, but the official site makes mention of them. I run into them around my home in Virginia. They are a force to be reckoned with. I believe I talked about them in an on-topic thread.
Flu at Roo was originated by me, in what I believe to be the correct forum. So, by default the discussion is on-topic. I figured correctly I'd get some flak. Most have pointed out there is little to no worry. Which I agree with. I was surprised to find Bonnaroo specifically mentioned in the Tennessee state guidelines for dealing with pandemic flu. God forbid Roo gets cancelled, but the politics involved would make a good story, not to mention the contractual obligations and insurance questions. Things are much more complex than can be imagined.
Attention seeking? Maybe I should post some quippy pictures?
I didn't here about this till last night when fixed news cough cough excuse me fox news was running coverage on it for like 4 hours straight and heraldo rivera kept trying to drum up ways to criticize Obama for how the government is handling this "world health epidemic."
I have a perfect idea why don't we bring back a vague color coded archaeic danger alert system. Today is blue which means you should be slightly more scared then green but slightly less scared then orange.
"How far can you go without destroying from within what you are trying to defend from without?” -Eisenhower
Fear is big business for politicians and news agencies alike. i.e. I'm the only one who can protect you so give up all your civil liberties and don't questions any of my decisions, or we are the only ones with the most up to date coverage so you have to watch us "are you kids safe? we'll tell you at 11:00", or Obama is doing a terrible job handling this global epidemic he's a bad leader. It's a legit concern and we should be aware of it but I think your catching flak cause people are tired of being told they should live in fear of attack or disease or global warming or whatever.
While the dangers are extremely low for us at this time. Over one hundred people are dead from this in Mexico so its not exactly something to make light about. Its a pretty f'd up situation.

It is bad in Mexico City, getfresh. I think people are making light of the hysteria, not the flu itself or the deaths it has caused. Let's put it into perspective: worldwide, common seasonal flu kills 250,000 to 500,000 people every year. 36,000 Americans die of the flu every year.
Flu pandemics can be bad, but they often are not (relatively). In 1918 a pandemic killed 100 million people. In 1968 a different one killed 1 million people. We now understand how they spread, how to prevent them from spreading, and we have better antivirals to keep them from killing as many people.
It could get really bad, but then again it might not. Right now there's no reason to connect this to Bonnaroo, except to try to stir up fear.
And riburroo -- of course TN includes Bonnaroo in emergency contingency plans when it mentions large gatherings -- Roo is the 6th largest city in the state when we're there.

They are also a third world country on the verge of becoming a narco-state. Many of it's citizens live in absolute poverty are poorly educated and are incapable of getting any kind of medical attention. Atleast 3 or 4 people a day are killed by drug cartels and we don't hear one word about it.
There is such a thing as correlation without causation. The fact that 100 people have died in Mexico is as much a reflection of its poor public health care system as anything else, as evdident by the lack of deaths in the US. This is only in the national spot light for two reasons, 1.) ratings 2.) politics
Don't you all see? This is clearly just a way to distract us all from the upcoming announcement of Zeppelin on the Byrne Stage. Geez, open your eyes, folks. ;D
+1 if I could ;D

I work in healthcare and I haven't heard a single doctor voice any concern over it. As it was said above, the flu kills around 35000 americans a year. Wash your hands, cover your mouth when you cough.

This. The greater fear from this is that a pandemic in Mexico may finally push them over the edge into becoming a failed state.
I think comparing this to the standard flu is just as bad a comparison as putting it up against the 1918 flu epidemic. For one every year when the flu season rolls around they arent killing thousands of pigs to try and deter the spread of it.

This is actually a good point. We really have no clue how big this problem is yet... It could be nothing but it has the potential to be something... Just stay away from Mexicans or people coming back from vacation in Mexico..
Its one of those things where... I tell two friends, and they tell two friends... and so on and so on... only its a virus. And its deadly.
You know, I actually overheard a mother telling her kid at the bus depot this morning that he should stay away from Mexicans unless he wanted to die from "piggysick"
"piggysick" dumbass... I would say a concern wouldn't be with people who live here. Maybe new travelers both illegal and legal... With that I can see how this will be used as fear mongering against this population by the wingnuts.
They just had on the local news here that some kids returned from spring break in Cancun sick and doctors confirmed that it was the swine flu so they shut the school down for a couple of days. So its made its way to SC. Like I said I am not particularly worried(my wife is an epidemiologist) but at the same time I dont think its something to simply scoff at.
