last year i was pissed as hell by the lineup, and didn't keep it a secret. WORD TO THE WISE: (i went anyway and had a F*CKING BLAST and saw tons of great music. it was actually nice not having soul crushing conflicts at all hours of the day for once.)
with that said, this lineup is nothing like last year. no MEtallica, no kanye cutting off phil's set, none of that bullsh*t. if you don't like this year's lineup, it's time to move on, because it's probably not going to get any better for you in the future. i bet there will be some jammy additions, but rather than jam band overload (which i thoroughly enjoyed back in the day too), superfly has made it clear the last couple years that they are only seeking out the creme of the jam band crop, and you have that again this year: phish, mule, galactic, moe., and definitely another add or two along the lines of sts9, umph and/or bisco, ABB, etc. that's a powerhouse of jam bands right there.
The more I've spent time with this lineup, the more I'm enjoying it. I think my initial displeasure came from the fact that it seemed very top-heavy. I tend to be more about the smaller bands than the headliners. In fact, I've attended every Bonnaroo except last year, and I've only watched a complete headliner 5 times (Trey in 2002, Neil Young in 2003, Dave Matthews & Friends in 2004, Dave Matthews Band in 2005, Radiohead in 2006). So that's a 5/18 for me.
At first, I didn't see as many smaller bands that I liked, but the lineup is starting to shine through to me. We'll see what happens. The killer for me is that Phish is going to do a latenight show, which means they'll conflict for me. I can't decide if I'm going to be happy that the other shows at that time will have smaller crowds, or if I'm bummed that I'll have to skip them to catch Phish.
Yea Phish will inevitably eat-up a whole latenight.... But I'm pleased that it will split up the crowds nicely. Phish is huge and all but this isn't just a Phish show there will be other stellar acts latenight (you won't be able to drag me away from NiN latenight) But i have no qualms about skipping one night of Phish to see something else....
It all depends on the schedule. I think it will work like this
Friday Beaties Boys ---> Phish (which stage) vs. Galactic vs. ? Latenight Satruday Phish ---> NiN (which stage) vs. Girl Talk / Oakenfold vs. Superjam Latenigth Sunday Bruce Springsteen
ughhhhhhh!! i hate to run the risk of just being a hater, especially as most seem thrilled. but damn i hope there are some serious additions. for me it completely unexciting aside from phish. i sure hope mule and moe are latenights because daytime mule or moe is pleasant and all but not worth the cash and hassle of roo for sure. and hopefully grace plays thursday night. but overall id say its a complete dissapointment. even with mule and moe. nuts they are gonna be at several festies all summer. i may seriously not go even though it is probably my best/only chance to see phish. quack it ill go see phish when they make themselves accessible in a reasonable way and not just at some sell out, played out, over priced roo show or over priced venues that you can only get into by paying 5 times what the originally over priced ticket cost from a scalper. damnit i was really excited about the possibility of returning to "ROO" but i dont think i can bring myself to do it. they still suck, its still new roo, phish is just the band that can make the most money this year. nothing has changed over there...... and i dont know whos running phish's nuts now days but they are running the risk of turning them into a commercialized joke, much like roo. i thought phish decided to use douches like live nation and superfly to streamline the process and make it easier for everyone. all they have done is make it easier to collect tons of cash. nothing is benefiting the phans at all. it seems like the police tour to me. and roo does whatever they think will make them the most money. last year sucked and this year they are having phish there because it will make money. not some full circle return to greatness like they claim. somehow when that circle journey started i dont remember seeing names like snoop, erykah badhu, the boss, NIN, and beastie boys on there. this isnt full circle, its just more of the same plus phish. hopefully phish make the money this summer and go back to a full tour and their own fests next year. and then maybe youll be able to get a ticket from someone besides a scalper. (although i think i like scalpers more then live nation and superfly) and you wont have to pay out the butt to go to the biggest pain in the ass hassle filled festie in the world to see phish and 3 other bands. i truly believe with this limited ass come back tour they should have sold tickets only in person at the venues. you want tickets get there 3 days early and wait. ya its a pain in the ass but atleast then its first come first serve. no computer problems, no professional scalpers buying them all up in seconds and raping us on them. no being forced to go to a fest like roo to see phish. i certainly feel as though i have been sold out by the manner in which phish is doing business and the quack nuts they are choosing to do it with.
words cannot even begin to express my disappointment!
All I can say is - we'll miss you because it is going to be an awesome time! ;D
oh wait - I don't know you - never met you - so I can't miss you then, huh?
i actually did meet you and boz for a brief moment. you guys showed up at camp inforoo as i was heading out. there was a mass introduction thing at the time. so we barely met. or almost met. or something along those lines.

This is interesting discussion. I have to admit I am not a Metallica enthusiast though I have nothing against them- and same for Kanye, etc.. When I saw the lineup I thought- oh well, it can't be designed for *me* every year - otherwise ZPZ would have been a headliner and greek food would be served in every eating spot. But last year was one of the most fun ones I have been too.
That being said- this year's lineup is definitely something I am super excited about- I have been going to B'roo since the second one- way before I got involved with AC/ radio bonnaroo and see 90% of my favorite shows for the year in one weekend.
and its not just about jam. we have been over this many times. i love lots of stuff. but this full circle return to greatness stuff is a joke.... trade in j-5 and lyrics born for snoop and beasties? bisco for NIN. norah jones for erykah bahu???? full circle my ass! is anyone buying this full circle stuff????? seriously????
2002 # Widespread Panic # Trey Anastasio # Ben Harper # The String Cheese Incident # Phil Lesh and Friends (w/Bob Weir) # Bela Fleck & Edgar Meyer # Galactic # Gov't Mule # Jack Johnson # Norah Jones # Jurassic 5 # Karl Denson's Tiny Universe # Les Claypool # moe. # Ween # Keller Williams (WMD's) # Acoustic Syndicate # The Big Wu # Blind Boys of Alabama # Blackalicious # John Butler Trio # Campbell Brothers # Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains # Cut Chemist # The Del McCoury band # Dirty Dozen Brass Band # The Disco Biscuits # Gabe Dixon Band # Donna The Buffalo # Dottie Peoples # Drums & Tuba # Gran Torino # Col. You are so right... it's DEFINITELY NOT "full circle". This year's actually a lot better than 2002. I mean A LOT better.
nope i never bitched about lyrics born. and i was actually referring to the year before the galactic thing. it was him common and blackalicious i believe. and i would never bitch about galactic. you forget i like hip hop. j-5 at roo is one of the best shows ive seen. and ive seen the beastie boys at langerado and i have to be honest. they sucked. they were corny on stage and it just wasnt good imo or the opinions of nearly everyone i talked to. and this is from a guy who grew up on beastie boys and was super excited to see them. but it dosent matter. its not about beasti boys or what ever. its about roo sucking and trying to rape all of us they raped years ago once again. and they got phish in on it too. call this the best lineup yet if you like. but dont call it full circle or a return to greatness... its just more of the same with phish stamped on it.
Dude you finally got it right! It is more of the same. That is more of the same Roo WE all love. Plus Phish, that makes it great this year. It is not the Roo you love, that is clear. But, few if any, agree with you around here. You can recycle your points in as many forms as you want. Nobody is buying what your pushing.
Sure some have left, both Roo and here. But our numbers have never declined here and I don't think Roo is going anywhere. If you stand still you will get left behind. We are glad you take the time to grace us with your 'wisdom' from time to time. ;D
I would like to take this time to express my approval of this line-up. Phish! Bruce! NIN! Byrne! Snoop (I won't say I told ya so)! TMV! Gooood stuff....
Add the Dead and it will be perfect.
why wont you??
if you wont i will...
TOLD YOU SO!!!
sorry, but i really did a little " i got a clue right" dance when i saw that!!

Dude--You will not be missed at all in fact please do not come with your poopy attitude make more room for me. What is it you are looking for anyway? Hassle? oh what the heat and dust and crowds etc... these are things we deal with when doing music fests. the price you pay. You meantion only Moe, Mule, and Phish that is what your happy about? You obviously then have very limited musical tastes. I personally am a huge Deadhead (175 shows) since the early eighties, Phish (50+) since late eighties, and many other jam/hippie bands since and I mean sure this might not be my ideal lineup (but it never will be) but what they have given us is interesting loaded with talent and very diverse. No other fest. will hold a candle to what 'roo has put together this year. Believe me I agree totally that Phish has dropped the ball on their tour (just not even close to enough dates considering how long they have been gone really really weak) and sure superfly etc.. want to make as much money as possible.. but hell so do I. Your scalper rant is deserved and has been in my repertoire for over 20 years. I remember the 'good 'ol days' sleeping out for Dead (and other bands) tickets in the early and mid-eighties fun times indeed. Expand your mind dude
I don't care what you say about me, just spell my name right---P.T. Barnum "As I was walking up the stairs I met a man who wasn't there He wasn't there again today I wish to God he'd go away."

I am happy with the lineup. god willing I'll be able to go this year. I'm excited to see Ben Harper again for sure. And since I've missed NIN 3 times last year, I will defiantly not miss them this year...if I get to go. ??? ???
Any lineup is great as long as that POS Kayne isn't invited. F him for making me listen to his crap at 7 in the morning.

ZAPPA FREAKS UNITE I hear you dj I have been a fan of Frank since I was 12 years old and have seen him 5 times. ZPZ was pretty much my favorite set of last year. Wish they headlined and played for 3-4 hours 90 mins was not enough. What sucked was there was nobody on after them in the tent for hours so realistically they could have continued playing and caused no backups in scheduling. Second the emotion of being able to see many shows in a weekend as these days I live in a very deprived area for music and do not have much opportunity to see live music anymore...not like I used to.

This is going to be one hell of a Bonnaroo more than likely one if not the best. We have a lineup almost as good as the lineups of yore, plus now they actually know how to run an event on the farm and portapotties with steaming piles 10 inches over the rim and 18 hour lines are a thing of the past. Dude if you want to keep your head in the sand and complain that it is too expensive, not a good enough lineup, just not worth it because you wont give these corporate monkeys your hard earned dollars, well I am sure the ledges will be nice this year. Let me know how seeing Ekoostik Hookah 75 times again this summer goes.
I'm really excited as well. I was thinking about what to pack last night in bed.
Also, I heard that Snoop will be on the What stage...They are going to leave it open on Thursday all day, and let him come out whenever he wants as long as he's done by 7am on Friday.

i sure will. ill let you know how 3 nights of DSO goes too. and if ya want i can tell you how badass it is every year with lotus, eoto, dso, buckethead, umphreys STS9, wookiefoot, cornmeal. waterband, steve kimock and melvin seals, keller, grey boy all stars, p-funk, moe., david gans, david grisman, donna jean, wookiefoot, jazzam, papdosio, mickey hart, boombox, pnuma trio, carlos jones, tony rice, yellowman, the new mastersounds, telepath, new monsoon, new riders, hot tuna, JGB, and a bunch more were too if youd like. hookah barely even makes the list of ledges acts. althought they put on a show that almost anyone can appreciate. they are great. they even graced roo with their prescense. back when it was relevant
