Some of these searches sound awful!! Do they really just tear apart people's car's or strip search them at random? This will be my first trip to roo and I've never experienced a car search before. How long do they actually spend searching through your car?
Basically, once you get close to the gates, they split the single file line of cars into several lanes to go through the "toll booths". Last year, we took the back roads in (exit 127). They corrall you up to the lines (this is where you can get separated from your traveling buddies). There is a drug task force, which are local cops. They will randomly select cars to search and they really search thoroughly. We were in the corrall for at least 30 minutes and they spent that whole time on one truck. They pulled everything out of the bed of his truck in the rain.
It's a totally different story if you have a volunteer searching your car. Last year, they didn't even touch my car, just peeked in the windows. I think it helped that my entire suv was crammed full and it would have been a pain in the ass to search it. Just pack smart. There is a small possibility that members of law enforcement are going to search your car. It's highly unlikely but totally possible.
Sometimes the volunteers can get a little over zealous. Just be kind and courteous. You've been in your car for several hours waiting to get in while they've probably been there even longer in the hot sun doing the same thing over and over again.

It did seem a lot less crowded, I was able to get to where I was going faster, the lines were always shorter (given we were vols and so we didnt use the entrance a lot) and it was definitely easier to get close at shows. It was really nice.
Like I said earlier, I think the biggest problem with security is a lack of communication. Nobody *really* knows what's going on except the supervisors, and even then they don't even know a lot of the time. My friends who worked security said they had the rules changed on them constantly, and kept having to change what they were doing. Not to mention the fact that there were like 5 different companies there, all with different standards about what should be searched.
Did anybody get searched by the Blue Shirts at the entrance to the What Stage by VIP? If so, they were my friends. I told them not to be mean, so let me know if they were lol
We walked the extra to go in that entrance. The two young girls that where there just smiled and waved us through every time. They seemed very nice in general. The other VIP entrance was not as pleasant of an experience though.

The main thing the volunteers are looking for are glass containers and sharp objects. I almost got my grill tools taken in '06. You're likely to have your cooler searched for glass containers. Really, don't bring glass. From what I observed, most of the people who were getting searched by the cops "fit the profile". So, don't do something like wear your NORML shirt, or pass out behind the wheel waiting in line, or forget about the hand-rolled cigarette you have tucked behind your ear, stuff like that. And, like others have said, be polite and courteous to whomever you encounter on the way in. Chances are, you'll move right through the line and won't have any trouble at all.
It's always best to have your cooler at a very accessible point in your vehicle, e.g.- the very back of your trunk or right at the door of the back seat, ect ect. Like others have said, the volunteers are almost always just gonna check your cooler and look around a bit. Last year I was the only one in my car and this very nice man asked me how I was and where I was coming from and whatnot and then asked if I had any glass liquor/beer bottles (said no, sir) he told me to be safe and have a nice time. Our first year though, we got torn apart completely. You just never know, it's a total gamble.

When coming in the gates with your car just be as open as possible. Hop right out of your car with a smile on your face and open up your doors and trunk and just tell them to search wherever they want. When looking in cooler/asking if you have glass just say "Nope, i've been here before....I know the deal about glass". I've never had the people searching the cars get to thorough. They didn't go through bags of clothes or anything like that. They are looking for suspicious things and glass and weapons and stuff.
I've never gotten pulled to the side and searched by the cops so I can't give any advice for that.
As for going into Centeroo.....I've seen them just confiscate contraband and toss it in the trash or in a collection of other contraband. I've found that it's easiest to get into Centeroo early in the afternoon - less of a line and easier to see which volunteers are searching hardcore and which ones are just kinda letting people in.

If someone underaged where to bring in a good amount of non-glassed alcohol, do you guys think security would ask for ID? If they did and they found out that person were underage, would anything happen or would they just take it?
^I'm 99.999% positive they wouldn't ask for ID, so I don't think you have anything to worry about as far as security goes. The only thing I would be concerned about is the drive from A-B and all the officers in between.

I was thinking we may get there early and a friendly roo'er could "help us out" on the spot. I don't like the idea of driving with it in the car either when underaged.
I really have no clue, haha, this is where my knowledge ends. There are multitudes of threads on the lot around here though, if you poke around I'm sure you'll find one.

What time should I get to the Walmart lot? Bonnaroo lets people in early Thursday morning, right?
Officially the gates open Thursday morning. I think they usually start letting people in on Wednesday night depending on how many people are in the Wal Mart lot. The cops will usually tell you if it's open or not. We'll prob hit the lot and then move in on Wednesday night. We'll see.

I haven't purchased my ticket yet and this is making me seriously reconsider going at all. I've never been to Bonnaroo, and I'm certainly not okay with having my private property violated against my will.

Have you ever been to a show? They give you a pat down when you go in, why wouldn't they search your car (if they felt they had to)?
Let me rephrase, I'm not okay with having my property ravaged by the police for no reason. According to some people on here they're tearing peoples' cars apart just for making eye contact. That's absurd. I get the pat downs and look overs, I'm not that naive.

First off never make eye contact, and I have seen dudes cars torn apart on their way into AllGood for less. Just do not be stupid, and you will never have a problem.

Thanks, I just worry about it because I've been profiled and had my car literally torn apart. I was coming back from a vacation, I have hippy-style (I guess you could call them) bumper stickers, and I got pulled over. I was nothing but polite and courteous, then the dude lies about smelling contraband. Him and his partner rip up my car, go through all our luggage, break my friends nice cigar box, pouring his comic books all over my car, and making the whole vehicle reek of B.O. After standing on the side of the freeway for 45mins, the ordeal ended with us driving away and me feeling really violated and pissed off. So now you know why I worry about it. Haha.
It happens, and it sucks. Honestly there are so many hippies at 'roo profiling is less of a problem than other places. I swear by the eye contact thing though, next time you are in a car start looking at people as you pass, and see them look back at you. That is what a lot of cops call their "gut".
The two years that I've been, 2008 and 2009, my vehicle wasn't searched extensively (in fact, not at all the second year). I don't know. I've seen people being busted at the vehicle entrance, though. Luck, I guess.
I had no problem with security. When we were at the check points to have our car searched, the guy asked where our cooler was. It was in the back seat so we got everything out of the way so they could open, they looked inside and let us go in. That was it, they didn't even open our trunk. To get into centeroo I went in the enrance with the arch everytime. Every time, the securitty guy looked in my bag, didn't touch a thing and let me go in. I had a bunch of sandwhiches wraped in tin foil laying right on top and none of them questioned me about it.

I was in one of the lines searched by the police. and it was extensive. it was me and my boyfriends first year, and we had no no words on us. if it wouldnt have been for the roo vets behind us in line we would have lost all of our goods to the cops who searched my car up and down, under the hood, all throughout my bags & trunk, in my purse and they even tapped on the panels of my car looking for stuff. I was so scared i was about to give up our no no words because they were threatening jail if they found anything. (which they did find cigars, parafinalia and a jar we held it in that still smelled of it). it was REALLY intense, but when they couldnt find it they gave us our mark and we were in. THEY NEVER SEARCHED YOUR PERSON. if that helps.

AND LAST YEAR. i was a lurker who was terrified of being searched by the cops at roo. I was really trying to be prepared to NOT get searched, (all the little tricks) NO EYE CONTACT IS A MUST. the second after i told my bf not to make eye contact last year, we must have done so and that when we got called over to the police line. ALSO I WAS SHAKIN PRETTY BADLY WHILE THE COP WENT THROUGH MY CAR. and the cop saw how nervous i was even asking why? but i just told him because hes a cop and i cried when getting pulled over (questioning done after that) but we still made it through.

I can't speak for VIP. Never went that route. But I've done GA the last three years. I'll be captain obvious. You are VERY unlikely to get searched by police. If it were any other way, it would take four days to get in. Even if you are, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out ahead of time (just walk ahead and look at the situation) and do something about the products you might go to jail over....feed it to the local deer. Unless of course you're dumb enough to show up with compressed gas or a bale of corn. Then you're asking to get busted. If you've made it all the way to the gate, you are basically home free. DON'T SPEED!! All of the folks pulling you over for that have the time and motivation to search you and run you into the joint. Cruise control will solve 99% of your po-po fears. Or you could just show up with no contraband. Hee hee. What's the fun in that?! But seriously, don't bring glass. That can really jack up a dude's feet.

It was pretty much dark on thursday night when we arrived to the gate last year... I didn't see any cops by the "tollbooths". I came in through the back roads and there were cops driving up and down the roads about 3 times every hour. At the gate they just asked about glass and weapons. I popped the trunk and he opened my cooler and shut it again. I'm surprised because I totally forgot about the glass jar of peanut butter and jelly in the cooler. haha
