Haters gonna hate, but Girltalk for some reason brings out the party in most people. I really enjoyed seeing him late night at Roo and highly suggest at least checking him out if you have at least a couple of minutes free. BTW I'm not defending his musicianship. I realize he's little more than a glorified premix dj but dammit if it aint hype as hell.
His show in NYC next month is sold out and people are paying hundreds for tickets. Granted, he doesn't do much but the crowd at his shows really goes off. I enjoyed him in 09 but after Phish and Public Enemy I was really tired by the time he came on....around 230 I think.
For those of you who think Girl Talk "doesn't do anything," I highly recommend checking out the documentary RIP: A Remix Manifesto. It's about the current state of the music industry as it relates to copyright law, and does get kinda preachy, but I found it pretty interesting overall.
CREAM ON THE INSIDE, CLEAN ON THE OUTSIDE CREAM ON THE INSIDE, CLEAN ON THE OUTSIDE MOVE BITCH, GET OUT THE WAY GET OUT THE WAY, BITCH, GET OUT THE WAY MOVE BITCH, GET OUT THE WAY GET OUT THE WAY, BITCH, GET OUT THE WAY NOONE ON THE CORNER HAS SWAGGER LIKE US SWAGGER LIKE US, SWAG-SWAGGER LIKE US NOONE ON THE CORNER HAS SWAGGER LIKE US SWAGGER LIKE US, SWAG-SWAGGER LIKE US GET YOUR FREAK ON-UH GET YOUR FREAK ON-UH GET YOUR FREAK ON-UH GET YOUR FREAK ON-UH
If you liked the above post, then go see Girl Talk live. If not, don't.
I don't care if he's up on stage playing Minesweeper or wanking. That Leno makes me dance my ass off and that's all I want to do late night at Roo.
I'm not disagreeing, but at that point, why not just have a house mix going? If you're just trying to listen to a mix that makes you dance...Don't even really need him on stage, know what I mean?
That said, I will say that Mr. Gillis does a pretty great job of getting and keeping the crowd hyped. He brings a lot of energy.

Girl Talk shows are always sick. I'd recommend checking it out, but he tours a lot so if it conflicts too bad you could probably skip it and not be too terribly pissed at yourself. That said, his 07 and 09 Bonnaroo shows were the 2 best of his that I've seen (and I've also seen him at Lolla and Moog, as well as on tour in Knoxville a few years ago and in ATL for my bday last Friday). It's definitely a party.
There will always be haters who feel he doesn't deserve the title "artist", but listen to Night Ripper or Feed the Animals (the latter is free to download) and hopefully you can see that although his newest album is a little bit weaker, he does put a lot of time into what he does.
Best of all, I have tickets to see him tonight in Knoxville. Cheers.

My stance on Girl Talk is that its good for what it is. If I'm throwing a party its a good mix to throw on sure, but I can't justify spending 30 bucks to see it "live."
That's the beauty of Bonnaroo... don't like Girl Talk? Go see something else.
Let those of us that DO enjoy his music and shows actually enjoy it. Thank you.
You're right, but that doesn't mean we can't debate his worth as an artist a little bit (as long as the debate isn't malicious, which it hasn't been in here so far). He's an interesting artist, and one that brings out opinions in people. I don't think that's a bad thing.

Yep I like to give him some crap, because he is an easy target. However plenty of people dig his act, and like lauren said plenty of people like the tunes. There are certainly artists I would rather have in the every other year slot, but there are also a lot worse ones that could be there.

I'll say this...he has a hell of a lot more talent than most DJ's on the scene today...The way he actually creates his mashups is pretty fucking fantastic. He basically breaks down songs by their soundwaves or something to find out which ones can fit together as perfectly as he makes them do.
Although, I'm sure me not seeing him live yet gives me a little better view on him. But I also agree that I probably wouldn't pay 30 dollars(or 45 which was how much his newyears show cost) to see him 'live'. But as a bonnaroo latenight? With nothin else to do? Hell yes I'm going to be there dancing my ass off.
All I'm really saying is based on what else is out there that's considered 'music/talent'...Mr. Gillis definitely has something to bring to the table.
I saw him on Halloween night in Nashville. He is what he is, but I had a blast. People dressed up in crazy costumes dancing all night was definitely fun. I understand what the haters are saying, I probably won't see him at 'Roo again, but he does what he does well.

what he does is much more complex then a normal house DJ. his songs he makes can get pretty complex, and they have several layers as far as the songs he uses. i know its not for everyone, and hardcore listeners of electronic tend to discredit him.
but for what he is, hes got talent. he puts on a fun show and he does a great job at getting the crowd into it.

Here's my take.
By virtue of his medium and his style, he is stuck in a place in which he will likely never grow out of. There is barely any growth to be found, if at all, between his first album and "All Day". And while he will almost definitely run out of steam one day, he's not there yet. "All Day" was still a very good collection, with some smart and incisive mixes and mashes, and just plays terrifically. His live shows, to date, equal that in terms of energy and skill.
Seeing him in a club in March, which is going to be a blast. Don't know if I would enjoy it as much in a tent or any larger stage (I was at Oakenfold in 09').
i just saw girl talk in covington.. and as has been said already, for what he is, he is fantastic... i dont like much rap, or dance music in general really.. but i was a sweaty mess from dancing my butt off for an hour and a half or so during his show....
just dont go there expecting him to bring out neil young for a few acoustic songs or anything and u will be fine.... and 09 was one of the just plain "funnest" bonnaroo shows ive ever been to.. id take him over tiesto, okenfold... prob not dangermau5 but u get the point...... no it wasnt radiohead in 06... but it was a blast

Yeah, I'm saying his own mix. I mean if he's just hitting play as opposed to actually DJing...know what I mean?

yea, his live performance isnt as skilled as other traditional DJs. that being said the amount of work he puts into the finished product though, its more complex then a lot of DJs out there.
