Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
I mentioned this before, but I've amended my theory... what about Justice?
1) A "justice" is a magistrate.
2) The band often goes by the symbol "†"... a character "of sorts", using the definition: "sort - characters of a particular font that are rarely used". Crosses as font characters are rarely used.
3) They're veterans of the electronic music scene having remixed lots of Roo artists. They're veterans of the festival scene having played tons of festivals (not Roo though).
4) They're from Versailles, France, home of the Palace of Versailles. Since the Palace and throne still exist but there's no longer a monarchy in France, the throne can't be abdicated as there's nobody to abdicate.
5) Versailles means "to keep turning over". When a crab finds a home, it eventually outgrows it and moves on to another one... the ocean's version of a house flipper.
Even if it isn't right, Coco for your excellent theory. We need more users like you working on these clues!
Thanks... I realllly hope I'm right though, haha. They would kill it.
Thank you. They would NEVER be stupid enough to ask him to come back. They know he's hated. Hate for him is spray painted on the fence for Christ's sake...or was.
Since his fiasco in '08 "F*ck Kanye!" seems to be somewhat of a 'Roo slogan now. My guess is that the messages don't carry the same venom as they did back in '08, but I know I personally don't want him back on The Farm. At least not without an apology.
If the clue applies to Bonnaroo then veteran means they've appeared before. Magistrate means they were a headliner. Character of sorts; filling in for somebody like the Allman Bros?? If they were a headliner, then they can't abdicate that position and may maintain it in the coming festival. As far as a crab making a fort, Jack Johnson has been mentioned, and his name has very humorous potential for being an answer to the last part of the clue.

That Justice logic is wonderful, very well thought out! I sincerely hope that either them, or the elusive Daft Punk will play. As for Kanye, I wouldn't expect him to go back to Roo either. Not only because of the Fuck Kanye deal, but he 's from Chicago so I expect him to play Lolla more, which he seems to do.

The first part, "A veteran and magistrate OR a character of sorts" might point to the name Jack. I thought of the jack from playing cards, who is a soldier (veteran, magistrate) OR a character of sorts (a character found on cards that one might sort).
They've remixed everyone, played everywhere, been nominated for Grammy's, have their music on TV and in movies, and they're genre jumpers... I can't think of many other electronic acts that can claim all of these things. They've accomplished more in the last five years than most electronic acts accomplish their entire careers. So, while I wouldn't call them legends, I don't think veterans is a stretch.

They have one album out and have been around for less than 10 years. Not veterans.

Neil young?
A veteran - Headlined Roo in 03
and magistrate, or a character of sorts - magistrate- b : a local official exercising administrative and often judicial functions . Young is a member of the Order of Canada who substantive members are the only regular citizens who are empowered to administer the Canadian Oath of Citizenship. Of sorts - Of a mediocre or inferior kind Could a member of the Order of Canada be considered an inferior magistrate because they only really have the ability to administer the oath?
A throne one cannot abdicate, of which a crab can make a fort. -
Young is often called the "Godfather of Grunge", a name that he can't give up nor can he be replaced.
Grunge - another word for dirt or soil, some crabs dig a hole or "fort" in the ground for protection.
What happens if my tee shot lands on a bird's back and he carries it out of bounds but then is attacked by a larger bird who grabs the ball and drops it in the hole? Is that still a hole in one? 'Cause that's how I'm gonna play it.
I'm gonna go out on a limb here, but my guess is Billy Bob Thornton by way of Davy Crockett. Other than Johnny Cash, Billy Bob is the only singer who's portrayed Davy Crockett in a movie.
"A veteran and magistrate, or a character of sorts. A throne one cannot abdicate, of which a crab can make a fort."
A veteran: Davy Crockett was a veteran of the Creek War A magistrate: In the Disney movie "Davy Crockett: King of the Wild Frontier," Davy Crockett is appointed magistrate of a local community. Character of sorts: Davy Crockett's been a character in tons of things, including cartoons Throne: Davy Crockett was King of the Wild Frontier
I'm lost on crab, but Billy Bob did play Davy Crockett in the movie "Alamo" and that was a fort.

How familiar with them are you, dude? Kinda seems like you just hit up their Wikipedia page, saw that they have one album out and decided they're not 'veterans'. Justice has done a lot of work and they've got a lot of respect as far as dance music goes. They've done countless remixes for some big names and have definitely been around the block enough times to be considered vets in my book.
I'll throw out Queens of the Stone Age. Not sure how they fit it all, but throne (Queen), character of sorts (revolving members, Homme has been in many bands), Fertita plays with the Dead Weather (veteran), a crab can make a fort out of stone. Not sure where magistrate comes into play.

Plus, a supreme court "justice" would be a veteran of the U.S. Judicial System. If you work the clue the other way.
Meh, maybe to much?

I like this logic a lot... and i like the way you thought of veteran as a Roo veteran. That is something to consider.
(and that's why i'm not ruling out jay-z or kanye or justice)

A veteran : Oysterhead @ Bonnaroo 06
and Magistrate: A civil officer with power to administer and enforce law = Stewart Copeland of The Police (The drummer for oysterhead).
a character of sorts: Les Claypool wears several masks during performances,
A throne one cannot abdicate: throne(The power, dignity, or rank of such a personage; sovereignty.) Colonel Les Claypool's Flying Frog Brigade. Colonel being his rank. Claypool cannot abdicate(To relinquish formally a high office or responsibility.) the band as he wrote/contributed their entire 1st and only album.
of which a crab can make a fort: The oyster crab lives inside the gills of an oyster and It uses the oyster for protection en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oyster_crab

1st post!
Playing off of this theory:
A veteran: Trey Anastasio
And magistrate: Stuart Copeland
A character of sorts:claypool
A throne one can not abdicate: would be the shell of the oyster
Of which a crab can make a fort: like magicmarker said the oyster crab lives inside the oyster and uses it's shell for protection

A veteran and Magistrate: Stewart Copeland drummer for The Police (The drummer for oysterhead also) played Bonnaroo with the police in 07 and with oysterhead in 06 making him a veteran and is also magistrate(A civil officer with power to administer and enforce law(thefreedictionary.com)) as he plays for the police (police fits definition for magistrate).
Some of the same logic I used to support Jack Johnson is better applied to Pearl Jam! Pearl Jam has played 'Roo (veteran), they have headlined (magistrate), they are a character of sorts (I think Eddie Vedder and Jack Johnson played on each other's stage). They didn't abdicate the main stage (throne) in the face of egotistical/crabby wishes of the following act (Kanye) who felt besieged on stage by a hostile crowd. And, there's a crab, the Oyster Crab, who utilizes live oysters (where pearls come from) for protection within the oyster's shell.

Good job magicmarker, this has to be it.
You know, even though I thought I had some solid evidence for it being Justice, I think it was wishful thinking. Your Oysterhead theory is pretty compelling.
