I like the Elvis logic leading to Jack White. Had we made an attempt to connect this to his new thing with Wana Jackson?.....or better yet the White Stripes?

Haha Oysterhead IS THE ANSWER!! I will get to hear my song now please part ways as Lono makes his way to the front of the crowd to soak up the wisdom in the music and use it to help guide his life. Other may doubt but Les will show them the path to righteousness.

first time poster here. i have followed prettty closely to all 4 clues and read basically every post so im caught up atleast with the news and guesses and what not although i havent posted earlier because you are all way ahead of me. However i am posting now because i dont see y oysterhead isnt still a viable option. gary basically said that" The veteran, the magistrate and the character are the same person" but with a sort of at the end. how could that not still be referring to Les Claypool? and he only said that the justice guess was no good

Alright, so we start over from scratch here. The first part of the clue with the veteran, magistrate, & character is one person we know.
So I'm thinking veteran = either a vet of roo, or a veteran
magistrate = s/he's the name on the band and calls the shots and writes the songs/arrangements, etc, etc
character, of sorts = I think this means somebody who plays different instruments or someone who has created many bands a la Les Claypool or Colonel Bruce Hampton (both I think, have been ruled out).
The second part of the clue could be the band. Do we know that for sure or at all or not?

Sweet, starting over. I know it's sort of frustrating, but I kinda love it - it's so nice to definitively rule out everything we mentioned so far!
Beyond that, I'd just like to point out that a lot of the recent guesses have been disregarding the emphasis on "of sorts." Don't forget that we know that bit is significant!
Oh, and along those same lines - I don't think the word "fort" is specifically significant. My money would be on the clue still making sense if "fort" was replaced with "home" or something else. Any time there's a rhyme I tend to assume at least one of the rhyming words is not crucial, and since we know "of sorts" is significant I'm assuming "fort" isn't really.

I skimmed the last few pages and didn't see this one, but pardon if it's already been guessed.
"A veteran, a magistrate, a character of sorts." These could all apply to Anthony Perkins. He has played both a soldier and a seasoned baseball player (veteran), as well as a sheriff in Tin Star. As an actor, he would be "a character of sorts."
"A throne one cannot abdicate, of which a crab can make a fort" has already been tied to Elvis Presley by a couple of people.

Elvis Perkins?
Don't feel like going back, but how does crab making a fort fit with Elvis Presley or is it him being named the King?

Oh, another thought:
The veteran, magistrate, and character of sorts aren't all just listed independently. It's "A veteran and magistrate, or a character of sorts." The veteran and magistrate are tied together, the character of sorts is an alternative to both. Or at least, that's how the clue is written.
Maybe "veteran and magistrate" describes one aspect of a person and "character of sorts" is another. Real name vs stage name, maybe. Or perhaps the "veteran and magistrate" describes the person and "character of sorts" describes their band - if "sorts" somehow referred to the band, then a member of that band could be a character of sorts.

I think it's a combination of him being "The King" and of him dying on his "throne", which someone mentioned could be used by a crab as a fort.
Dunno. Probably not right. I just heard Elvis Perkins on my ipod today, remembered Elvis being mentioned in this clue, and did some digging on Anthony Perkins.

I just watched Robert Downey Jr's golden globe speech. In it, he describes himself as "veteran of sorts". The clue is worded differently but it stuck out at me and as a recent event in the news, and that being one of the highlights I wondered if it could be involved. Do any of his film roles relate to the clue?

he played ironman......were gettin sabbath!
Come to think of it Ozzy may not be a bad guess. Ozzy is considred the Godfather of Heavy Metal. Now to connect the other pieces.
The veteran, the magistrate and the character are the same person.
Ding, ding, ding! Sort of....
Maybe the "Sort of" means that all three are talking about one object and not a person?
Could the first part be pointing us to a gun, it could be considered a veteran because of their use in wars and could be a symbol for law enforcement(Magistrate), and a characteristic of sorts of both would be a gun.
A throne one cannot abdicate, of which a crab can make a fort.- Smith and Wesson are often referred to as the "King of handguns", they also make ammo which contain "shells", shells being what a crab can make a fort of for protection.
Smith and Wesson are often mistakenly called Smith and Western....so my answer is the Smith Westerns.
What happens if my tee shot lands on a bird's back and he carries it out of bounds but then is attacked by a larger bird who grabs the ball and drops it in the hole? Is that still a hole in one? 'Cause that's how I'm gonna play it.
Well a prince cannot abdicate a throne because it is not yet theirs, and "of which" type is it? The type where a crab could make a fort... darkness. The Prince of Darkness Ozzy Osbourne
