It's really is impossible to compare a B.B. King to a Dweezil/Frank Zappa or a Robert Randolph. The differences in playing styles just makes it too hard.
Plus, as far as I'm concerned, you could be the greatest technical guitarist in history, but if you can't write an good song, I simply don't care.
These last two points are spot on! Thats what great about those 3/4 guitarists, they had their own sound and style that people didn't replicate, and thats why they are great. And your second point is the reason I think Frank was the best, not only was he one of the technical best imo, but he also wrote some of the greatest compositions i have heard. Think about how Frank created everything you are hearing when you see ZPZ and its pretty mind blowing, also note that while he didn't take solos often, basically everyone song is one big awesome solo on guitar, but the music is written in such a way that it blends into the rest.

Bingo. I've argued these points with so many people when talking about Frank Zappa. A lot of people just don't get it. I think you immediately develop a deeper appreciation for Frank Zappa the first time you seriously try and learn an instrument.
"Plus, as far as I'm concerned, you could be the greatest technical guitarist in history, but if you can't write an good song, I simply don't care."
This explains my distaste for John Mayer ; obviously, a fantastic guitarist, just can't write songs to save his life.
see i disagree with that statement... why would anyone like ben harper play on his albums if he didn't think john could write a song...
This is just my opinion... sorry, guess I forgot to post that ; )
But, honestly, it's another topic for another day, but let me put it this way.... He's such a good guitarist, why doesn't he make better music? Edit: But since last year's Superjam, Ben Harper has been irrelevant to me, so I can't answer your question, lol.

i have to stick up for john mayer. he writes really beatiful songs. maybe look at some of his lyrics and listen to his live john mayer trio album before totally negating him as a song write

This made me LOL. Are you referring to him writing music or songs, because while i think his lyrics are pretty good, the music is not that impressive. He was pretty sweet when he played with the Headhunters in 05' though. Kinda reminds me of Yngwie Malmsteen, who in my eyes never really put it all together solo.
It was more directed towards his music as a whole. He really is an incredibly talented player, but I find his music soooo unoriginal and average... Doesn't catch me, I guess I should say.
And given his talent, he should at least be making music that interests me somewhat... just disappointin.
