I don't know how you dudes can't get into live hip hop. It's certainly pretty damn hit or miss, but my favorite shows ever have been hip hop and electronic. If the sound is good (a big problem, often) and the performer is proven, you really can't go wrong IMO.
Signed. I've seen just as many great hip hop shows as bad. And I don't understand Moby Thingys comment about "actual music". Can you elaborate on that one?

i caught his set at rock the bells this summer with mos def. it seems as if hes bringing actual hip hop credibility to bonnaroo compared to kanye and lupe...
Seeing Chuck D in person would have blown my mind. I know I'm a really white dude, but Chuck is one of my favorite songwriters and vocalists in any genre of music...and P.E. is my favorite rap artist.

Oh sure...I meant music...as in sound made from musical instruments on a stage...rather than recordings of musical instruments played by MUSICIANS elsewhere...
I've got nothing against hip-hop...and respect the hell out of certain MCs as poets...artists yes...but musicians...sorry...not buyin it.
They play other people's music while reciting their poetry...if Picasso listened to music while he painted would that make him a musician?

I'd say it depends on the artists. The Roots, for instance, are clearly musicians, playing all they're stuff line. "Music" for me involved a tune though and if an artist is solely rapping and not singing, with just a DJ or something, I'd agree it's not live "music", it's just live hip-hop. Which I like a lot. Obviously it's a very blurry line people are going to disagree on, but I see where Moby's coming from. There's a live vs. prerecorded element as well as a singing vs speaking element.

I can see where Moby is coming from... It really all depends on what you define an "instrument." If you consider a voice an instrument, then hip hop artists most certainly are musicians! If you feel you can't classify vocals as an instrument then it probably is better to think of rappers as "artists"
Where do I stand on this? Well... I think it depends on the individual. There are some hip hop acts that I consider musicians, and some that might be better off labeled as artists.
Talib Kweli, I look at more of as a poet of sorts... his music is great, too. (I personally don't get the whole musician/non-musician arguement... do they make music of any sort, good or bad, original or unoriginal? Then they are musicians... period.)

The Beautiful Struggle by Talib is one of the top three hip hop albums of all time. I am against the hating on Kanye though...The College Dropout is also in the top 3...Everyone knows deep down that West will put on a GREAT show whether you like his music or not....
I've got to interject. I love Talib Kweli and have seen him 3 times, so I'm not a hater. But I personally think it's outrageous to say that "The Beautiful Struggle" is that good. It got ripped apart critically. Message boards are littered with people hating on it. I personally thought it was watered down and weak. I think you'd be alone in a bold statement like "Top 3 hip-hop albums of all time."
I would recommend Train of Thought and Black Star above anything else. I also liked Quality pretty well. But those first two are really incredible, in my opinion. Check those out if you want to hear real hip-hop, conscious, good lyrics, good beats.

He is the only hip-hop artist I have interest in seeing this year. I have never been to a rap show so I am hoping he doesn't conflict with anyone good.
You should check out Ozomatli. Not straight up hip hop but theyve definitely got the influence in there somewhere.
Ozomatli is touring with Tre from Pharcyde in the band too. And since this will be Roo they may have other hip hop guests too.
PE were "entertaining" but mainly cause Flav just messed EVERYTHING up from the second they came on stage until they left...and he didn't....he stayed out there cursing out his own band....hilarious...but not musically good at all.
At Vegoose? Hmm... lol I guess I had more to drink that day than I thought!
I have seen PE a few times live and I thought the Vegoose show was solid as well.

You may be talking about most of the crap they play on the radio. But some hip hop DJs (DJ Premier, DJ Shadow, DJ Babu) are as good at their "instruments", which is the turntables, as any musicians for any type of music of any genre. And they don't just "play records" they create new music from snippets of other people's work. Watch the documentary "Scratch" (GREAT movie by the way) and you will likely have a new appreciation.

Agree to disagree and whatnot, but I could argue with this post for days.

I didn't mean for this to become an argument about everyone's top three so let's continue to show some love for Kweli. I'm really high on seeing Talib, but if he conflicts with Robert Randolph then I'm gunna have to pass. Other than that, I'm in.
I have seen Talib live about 10 times at least. His voice def. comes off different in person than on CD (not as good, IMO) but his shows are still live and he really knows how to get the crowd going. Seen him with MOS a couple times too and that is a great experience.

I make an argument...instead of a counter argument, you call me an idiot...you are clearly smarter, more cultured, and a much better debater than I.
Please....tell me how to think.
(By the way, I said all of that with a James Brown record playing in the backgroud...you guys think it should be my new single?)
I think I posted this somewhere else, but I just don't get Kweli. I like a lot of different types of rap and hip-hop: old-school, gangsta, underground, "concious", mainstream, commercial etc. I consistently find Kweli to be bland and uninteresting. His voice, style, lyrics, beats: none of them stand out. Anything he collabs on from Blackstar to the Chappelle movie, I find him to be the least interesting part.
Anyway, I'm not just here to hate (I will probably check out his set just based on his reputation and feel like I should like him based on how I see him discussed). I've listened to plenty of his music (I do love Blackstar for Mos, I have Quality, Ear Drum and I think a Hi-Tek collab?) and have several albums on my computer, but who can recommend me some of their favorite tracks to change my mind?
