"O Is The One That's Real," the song that introduced me to them, I'd like to hear.
Luckily, it gets a lot of love live!
On a side note, it's really cool, but how in the hell was that the song that you were introduced to them with?! Before the Okonokos live release, it was a pretty obscure EP track on a split with Songs: Ohia and basically a favorite amongst the fanboys, unless you caught it live.
For the record, gimme: "Phone Went West," "Evelyn Is Not Real," and "Just One Thing"

I saw MMJ last night - they taped a show for tv at this church in downtown Toronto - they only let in about 200 people. The program is called Beautiful Noise and it shows on an HD channel in the US and SunTV in Canada. They were amazing! The new songs sounded great - really looking forward to the new record and a return visit to Toronto. Here is a review of the show: www.chromewaves.net/
I have seen MMJ 8 times and loved it every single time. Besides Pearl Jam, they are truely going to be of the more memorable shows, as they were in late night Roo 2006. I really can't wait till they release their new album. Jim James is an amazing artist.
Im not trying to be rude or anything but i just don't like these guys. Ive even tried to make myself get into them and still can't do it. i guess it's just not for me. anyone else feel this way?

I felt exactly the same way until a couple of weeks ago. I tried really hard to listen to and like them, but they bored me. I saw them in a small club and they were magical. I can't get enough of them now.

I remember a few years ago when I was trying to get into them, my brother gave me a copy of 'It Still Moves' and I thought it was OK, some songs I really liked, but overall I wasn't sure of them. Then I saw them at Bonnaroo in '05 and I've been in love with them since. Even though it's a really cliche thing to say, I truly believe you must see them live to really understand what it's all about. They're a fvcking rock n' roll juggernaut and they'll be pulling out all the stops this year, I'm sure. For your own sake, I say at least check them out at Roo and if you don't dig it, go check out something else. If I may ask, what is it you don't like about them?

they just kind of bore me. i wouldn't say i dislike them but i can't quite say that i like them either. Maybe i just need to see them live. My fiance's friends all love the f&ck out of them and we just don't understand it.
Now i know that i can be quite the "snobby musician" at times, but im really trying to see what everyone else sees in these guys.
I'll definitely try my best to check them out this year.

If you like rock music and you're bored at a MMJ show...you might be dead. I can understand not being able to get into some of their recorded stuff. . . so I'll just say it again - go see them! There's a reason people call them THE GREATEST ROCK BAND ON THE PLANET. . . it's because they are. They will melt your face and soothe your soul, man. Seriously.

Yeah, i will second this (and thanks for the chuckle)...
Some of thier earlier recorded music, if you listen the CD's all in a row, all kind of blends together in this sort of not very amazing country fried rock.
but then there is seeing them perform. woah. WOAH!@
And the great thing is that not one CD defines who they are. You might have listened to Z and hated them but then heard At Dawn and loved it. They have and continue to develope their music into something beautiful. Plus to see them live really defines the essense of a jam band. Course, different strokes for different folks I guess.
except for the fact that they aren't a jamband. They're a country rock band with r&b soul.
Well, I guess it depends on how you define jamband, cuz they definitely jam . . . but yeah, definitely not like most "jambands." I don't really think calling them a country rock band with r&b soul really works either. They're much more than that. I mean listen to the new song Highly Suspicious and tell me how that is at all country rock or even Wordless Chorus and others off Z. They're a genre-bending rock band. I usually just say they sound like THE GREATEST ROCK BAND ON THE PLANET! That's all that can really be said, I think.

^^I dig that, I think he's got it pretty close to totally right.
I didn't attempt to listen to any of their music before '06, and we caught the last part of that set, from The Bear on, I think, and...wow. Their studio stuff can't compare, but it does take you back. I like that guy's description.
I've been listening to them for years and absolutely do not agree that you need to see them live to appreciate them -- although seeing them live is one hell of an experience. They're not for everyone. Then again, who is?
^ Oh, I don't think you need to see them live to like their music, I just think that until you see them live you aren't really gonna get the full effect. I didn't listen to anything they recorded until after seeing them live, and my first reaction upon listening to the cd was "this is still really good, but it's not the same energy at all." I hear a lot of people say the same thing about Sound Tribe.

Oh, I know. I was referring to the other person who said not to bother to listen to recordings if you haven't seen them live. I might say that about any number of bands, but MMJ isn't one of them.

the mmj love is right here. they are my biggest consolation after seeing lolla's powerhouse headliners. i think i have thought "at least roo has mmj" at least 100 times since the initial announcement.

has anyone else heard their album Chapter 1: The Sandworth Cometh? I somehow just realized today that I own this and had never really listened to it (i know, wtf?). It has some really good songs on it...will tide me over til evil urges hopefully.
