Hmmm. What is it you don't like about Wilco or Iron & Wine? Maybe that will help us figure out recommendations for you. Or tell us what it is you do like in music. I find that sometimes it takes listening to a band a few times before it clicks. Here is my top 13 list from another board...hope you find something you like:

Nothing about Wilco or Iron & Wine really grabbed me - I listened to the 2 you have on your list a few times but just didn't "get" them. I actually saw Drive by Truckers live and didn't like them either....... Maybe I am just picky..... It's hard for me to say what it is I like or don't like about music. It either grabs me or it doesn't - as you can see from my musical taste, it is kind of all over the place........ I am going to try some of your other suggestions though thank you
Meg - you are right on with my taste - I already love most of them - although not heard any Bonerama or Dr. John.
Bonerama and Dr. John are both awesome. Try "Trippin' Live" from Dr. John and any of Bonerama's discs. Their rendition of "Frankenstein" gets me moving (and I rarely move!).
TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain - Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes The Strokes Sonic Youth - Goo Slint - Spiderland RJD2 - The Third Hand ("Work It Out") Vampire Weekend - dunno what their album is called if they have one, but check out "mansard roof"
and i second of Montreal.
check out their older(older than their newest, not old at all) albums, such as The Sunlandic Twins and Satanic Panic in the Attic. their albums as a whole are great but a few random of Montreal song suggestions:
on hissing: Heimdasgate Like a Promethean Curse Gronlandic Edit A Sentence of Sorts in Kongsvinger The Past Is a Grotesque Animal
on satanic: Lysergic Bliss Rapture rapes the muses Disconnect the Dots
Sunlandic: Wraith Pinned to the Mist and Other Games (this is the outback song basically) Forecast Fascist Future
but again, just check out the entire albums. although his voice could potentially immediately turn you off.
Xavier Rudd - especially White Moth and Solace, he's an Australian one man band who is absolutely amazing. He's got a Paul Simon-esque voice, and some really strong folk and reggae influences. And he plays the didgeridoo! His style is similar to Ben Harper's earlier stuff.
Derek Trucks Band - check out the albums Joyful Noise and/or Soul Serenade. Trucks is one of the guitarists for The Allman Brothers Band, so you know he's good. His band has some nice blues mixed with equal parts world music and jazz, with a dash of funk for flavor.
Ray LaMontagne - he's very similar to Damien Rice in style, and has a really nice voice (with a little bit more grit to it than Rice). Check out Till The Sun Turns Black. Also, here's a video of him playing with Damien:
The Flaming Lips - like Radiohead, the Lips write textured songs with layers and layers of instruments, so there's something new for you to year every time you listen to them. I'd suggest you check out The Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots.
Mercury Rev - <see description for The Flaming Lips> Check out Deserter's Songs and All Is Dream.
Belle & Sebastian - Described as "chamber pop" music, meaning they use lots of instruments that you'd expect a chamber orchestra to employ. They also have some subtly funny lyrics, for the times you listen that closely. Lots of acoustic guitars, trumpets, violins, and Scottish people making some nice tunes to relax to. If You're Feeling Sinister is really good, as is Dear Catastrophe Waitress.
Crosby, Stills & Nash (and Young) - acoustic rock at its finest, and some of the greatest vocal harmonies of all time. Their first album (Crosby, Stills & Nash) contains some of the coolest folk/rock tunes I've ever heard, and Deja Vu (with Neil Young) takes everything they did on the first album then makes it better. Also check out each of the members' solo efforts, David Crosby's in particular. His first solo album, If I Could Only Remember My Name, is in my top five of all time.
Grateful Dead - Hopefully goes without saying, since you're into Phish and moe. but the Grateful Dead have some really great tunes as well. Aoxomoxoa is their best from the 60's, and Blues For Allah is my overall favorite studio album. For live stuff, check out Live At the Cow Palace, 12/31/76 (especially the second disc!) for some really nice jams. "Scarlet Begonias" is one of the happiest songs I've ever heard.
A Perfect Circle - The other band that Maynard James Keenan sings full time in, and they're nearly as good as Tool. Not as heavy, with more emphasis on musical texturing than being in-your-face. Their debut, Mer De Noms, is their heaviest and bears the most resemblance to Tool, but Thirteenth Step is just as good.
Oysterhead - Les Claypool, Trey Anastasio and Stewart Copeland. That's about all I have to say here. Their only album is The Grand Pecking Order.
The Mars Volta - the only band I've ever heard that can successfully blend salsa, jazz, progressive rock and latin rhythms. Some of the most talented musicians I've ever heard, channeling all of their energy into a furious storm. There isn't really anything else like it. I'd suggest listening to De-Loused In The Comatorium and Frances The Mute, and if you like it then check out Amputechture. Their newest, The Bedlam In Goliath, comes out January 29th.
Sorry for typing so much! "Suggest a band" is one of my favorite games ;D
The Life Pursuit is also great, but I think the two I mentioned would be a better introduction to the band. I love them, thank you Lauren for introducing me to them!
a great thing to look at if your looking for new music is the now playing thread, theres always something someone is listening to that i havent heard, thats my goto source most of the time

I was at USL from 81 - 83! I was a Sheiks, Cold and RZA fan, myself. Haven't lived in Louisiana since 83, but I visited ULL this March and it seems just the same.

86 to 89 for me ,even worked briefly at the Loose Caboose. Dash Rip Rock was the biggest thing for me actually.
I grew up in NOLA so got to see the Cold a few times. I still can't bring myself to call it ULL though. Lafayette is a great town though, I'd move there in a heartbeat if only there jobs in my career field.
Ha. I still call it USL, too. The only reason I sometimes say ULL is that my friend's father was in the athletics department there and her brother works in the athletics department now, too. So they are constantly correcting me. The last time I saw The Cold was that reunion show at Howlin' Wolf a few years back. Hmmm, maybe more than a "few" years!

well, i can see that you have a good taste in music..you already listed some of my favs (tool, incubus, pearl jam, jbt, system)...but heres my recommendations: Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magic, Stone Temple Pilots - Core, Glassjaw, Blind Melon, Isis (Not in Rivers But in Drops), John Frusciante, Queens of the Stone Age, Sublime, and the White Stripes... good luck, i know i'm always tryin to catch some new tunes as well
and oh yeah, i saw them mentioned above but try A Perfect Circle...Mer De Noms is one of my fav albums ever

We have pretty much the same taste - I do already love most of the above, although I don't listen to them so often anymore.
But Gov't Mule is one I have only heard live so maybe I will check them out some more.
