Haven't ever been a big Tool fan but also haven't ever spent the time to try and get to know their music.
Give me about 5 songs that I should start out with. You know, the ones that will grow on me and eventually help me appreciate the music even more when I see them next Friday night!
wow, in my opinion that's hard to do. the albums are very cohesive and I tend to listen to an album at a time. Usually I'd reccommend to pick one and sit with some head phones and just tune out for a while, and see what you get out of it.
We treat mishaps like sinking ships and I know that I don't want to be out to drift Well I can see it in your eyes like I taste your lips and They both tell me that we're better than this
Im trying not to post in any more Tool threads because quite frankly im sick of seeing them. But since I just burned a mix cd for my dad, I will post it here. Its kind of tailored to what I think would work best for him as an introduction, coupled with what is essential. It might work for you also.
Eulogy Jambi The Patient Sober Schism Prison Sex Forty Six & 2 Right in Two Jimmy Undertow Lateralus Vicarious Ænima
"They won't break me because the desire for freedom, and the freedom of the Irish people, is in my heart. The day will dawn when all the people of Ireland will have the desire for freedom to show. It is then that we will see the rising of the moon."
It should also be noted that I agree with the post above. Rarely do I mix albums just because the progression is very radical so I like to listen to one sound at a time.
This morning at work I listened to every cd from opiate-10,000 days in order. It was beautiful

Go buy AEnima and listen to it. If you dig that, go buy Lateralus and listen to it. Tool is one of the last "album" bands, and like it's been said their albums are truly cohesive.

also, they do a f*cking brilliant cover of "No Quarter" if you can find that, grab it. Hopefully they will play it at Roo. Sh*t, hopefully John Paul Jones will come out and play bass or keys with them for that.

let me preface by saying i think zeppelin was the greatest band ever. tool's version of no quarter is better than zep's.

I also recommend reading the lyrics to the songs as you go. The best listing of lyrics and some explanations of songs from Aenima-Salival-Lateralus are in a downloadable pdf file I found on the net. A dude wrote a book detailing each lyric, interpretations of the songs, and what maynard possibly meant by the lyrics for his mother (taught him to look deeper in songs...etc). It is a great read to go along with the cds you will be listening to if you download them.
The link is www.vanillacircus.net/, and scroll all the way down for the download. Now I will say welcome to the world of Tool my friend, and enjoy.
But like the dude above said, listening to the whole collection without a break is amazing. You really see the transition they have made from originally being a great rock band, to what they have become today and in my opinion our generations Pink Floyd (not to compare them to each other, but influence and musicianship all the members have).
"That's the big thing about education. People can be book smart, but not really intelligent about anything else. A lot of times they just taking in all this information and regurgitate it. It's much more important to process it and personalize it. To apply it to your world, to your life. You have to walk the walk, or you can't really report about it honestly."
Id actually disagree with reading that book. Read the lyrics, for sure, but I'd highly recommend against reading someone else's ideas before trying to digest for yourself first.
Not that the book is bad, I've read it and think hes spot on for the most part, but i wouldnt want to without knowing anything about the music and have ideas be tainted i guess.

Well you can skip the reading of the guys interpretaion if you want to, but the lyrics he has written down are the closest to what he is actually saying on the cd, with a lot of the hidden lyrics maynard says.

true, but that would be kinda hard to read and not be tempted to read the interpretations. Toolshed.down.net (all of the old albums were submitted by maynard himself) has all the lyrics he will need. Worry about the little wispers later, he's/she's gonna be in sensory overload for a little while anyway.

----------now, the important part------------------
no quarter will be played with john paul jones at some point.... this is a monumental moment that i dont think tool will miss....
just be there, or you will be pissed for years to come...
My boyfriend is a HUGE Tool fan (HUGE) and I've never been that into them, until I saw them for the first time live May 2006. The show was at a tiny auditorium at a university in Dallas and when the music came on it was so loud there was a cold draft...and I've been in love with them ever since! The music is slightly heavy, yes, but I still have to say they are the one of the most psychedelic bands around today. All albums are good, especially on headphones...
